Guinness, the heart of Ireland and home to the Black Stuff!
It's interesting how big of an influence Guinness is to Ireland. I wonder if they teach this to their kids in elementary schools. jk. I am not much of a drinker, but if one is in Ireland, one must partake in the Guinness Storehouse experience! You don't have to be at a drinking age to enjoy the tour, minors are gladly welcome. There are others things to drink besides Guinness. Also, Guinness is not really black, it is technically "dark ruby red" because of how it is brewed. Guinness is created using roasted malted barley, similar to how coffee beans are prepared. The intense heating process cooks sugars, amino acids and grains together to produce its dark color.
Admission is €25 at the door, or if your purchase tickets online they are €17.50. I had the Dublin Pass which granted entrance to multiple attractions within Dublin. There is a 1 day pass for €52, or a 3 day pass for €83.
The experience is a self-guided tour. Guinness recommends at least 1.5 hours to explore, yet I was there for nearly 3 hours. This was one of my favorite brewery tours, and I don't even enjoy alcohol.
Modeled after the Chicago School of Architecture, it is a steel-framed brewing factory turned museum. You are allowed to you view some of the old brewing equipment, witness brewing techniques, and see the stout ingredients. The first 5 floors are exhibits, the 6th floor is food and the 7th floor is the Gravity Bar that offers a 360-view of Dublin. I loved all the advertisements and propaganda Guinness made over the years. You learn so much about it's rich history, participate in a tasting session, and are taught how to pour the perfect pint. You are also entitled to a free pint of Guinness which you can pour yourself or have it poured for you at the Gravity Bar. But beware, pouring Guinness is an art. You don't want to screw yourself over if you don't know what you are doing. lol. jk.
Alcohol lover or not, this was a well worth visit.
Oh, and they also had free recipes for Guinness infused food! They will find some way to incorporate Guinness into your life. Lol
