Hi! I was Rex's student about 2 years ago. By that time, I was learning how to play guitar by myself. Being so new to the art, it was overwhelming where to start in terms of technique (scales, chords, keys...). My Dad (who is still a student of his) decided to try him out in hopes it could help his and my playing. When we sat down, he was instantly warm and welcoming, displayed true skill of the instrument, and demonstrated the building blocks needed to play guitar. In about 3 months, I was able to not only gain an understanding of music, but also be able to write my own material (which was my goal from the start). After about 6 months since our first lesson, I went away to college. I joined a band instantly and after some time and practice, I started playing gigs around town (I even got paid too). Now, in the present and having played guitar for a little under 3 years, I am currently recording, performing, writing, and learning music. I even participated in a world record attempt for longest continuous concert (results are still getting processed). I have been taking ukulele lessons with Rex for 2 months now. I was a complete beginner at first. I never took a music class in school and had no idea where to start. Rex gave me a couple of books right away and told me the best way to begin. After 2 months of studying with Rex, I have learned to read staff notation, move-able chords and a couple of scales. My sense of rhythm is not very developed, but Rex is very patient and supportive. He is always full of praise for the lessons I have learned, and full of encouragement for the lessons I struggle with. Having Rex come to my house is amazingly convenient. He always shows up a few minutes early to make sure we maximize our time together. Rex is very respectful of my time and my goals. I've been taking guitar lessons with Rex for only a month, and started as a complete beginner on this instrument. I'm a big music lover though, and play the piano so I've spent years working with a number of music teachers. From that experience, I'd have to say that Rex is the best I've had. What really sets him apart is that he has the rare gift of knowing how to teach - how to convey the information from his brain to the student's fingers. Although I don't take lessons, my 10 year old niece does, and I've visited my sister's house a couple times when she was having a lesson. We didn't disturb them, but from the way they interacted and how Rex (the instructor) listened and taught her, I was impressed. She's learned a lot from Rex and has become so engrossed with her guitar. She'll even play for me when I come out to visit sometimes. My sister said private lessons can be a little expensive, but with Rex, it's totally worth it. Plus, he comes to your house. That's also really cool. I have been taking lessons from Rex Bell for a little over a year and have been very happy with the progress I have made. I had a little background (self-taught in college) when I started but no formal training. Rex Bell, In two lessons from Rex I now feel like I can play the banjo, not like Rex can, but I know that with Rex teaching me I will be a good banjo player. I've been trying to play for months reading books and practicing but just couldn't make it work. I thought that maybe 70 was to old to learn but Rex proved to me that you are never to old or to young to learn if you want to. Rex is a great guitar teacher. I have been taking lessons with Rex for the last 12 months, a gift from my wife who couldn't bear listening to me hammering out the same chords all the time. I was finding it really hard to move from a basic level of guitar and Rex's method's has helped me to push through that by giving me the building blocks that I need to push through. I was initially sceptical of the Skype of the Skype method but I am totally converted now, there is no downside to the method, ti saves time and Rex is always available for one off questions. Rex is one of the best guitar teachers I've ever had. He makes learning new techniques easy and enjoyable. He's a real comedian, too. He's always making jokes about himself, making me laugh and chuckle. He's really laid-back, but also serious about his work and about teaching me.
