I never thought I could get good enough to solo, and now I can play and improvise solos pretty well in multiple keys. I can write chord progressions and songs, and my understanding and enjoyment of music in general has skyrocketed. In addition to teaching you songs, chords, and scales, David makes sure you understand the underlying music theory at the heart of music. This was the "aha!" moment for me, understanding that intervals between sounds are the basis for all music. Both of my kids started at the age of 4 and this really changed their lives and wired their minds for music for the rest of their lives. When we started this journey, we had no ambitions about our kids being concert violinists, we just wanted them to enjoy music and hopefully have it be an enriching part of their lives. Now I can say unequivocally that this program wired both of our children's brains to be magically musically literate. He is also an excellent player and that translates 200% into his teaching. In my years studying with him I learned an incredible amount in terms of complex musical concepts applied to percussion, simple straight ahead groove and feel, and the art and science of professionalism. I started seeing Ned when I'd decided that after becoming pretty competent in Rock Band, I might actually try learning for real. I've always thought about drumming but never pursued it. However, it turns out my son started to favor symphonic band and orchestral playing. Ned adjusted his lessons to now cover not only rock and roll drumming, but things like proper tympani technique and snare drum rudiments, including drum corps and marching band techniques. Ned also helped him prepare for All State band and orchestra auditions. The end result was 3 years in all state in high school, and 4 years on the drum line at UW.
