Started off as a good PCP, but I was quick to learn, when he refused to give me a culture on my wound infection and I had to go to a clinic to get one, then before he would give me a prescription for my pain relief, he had me go into a nurse And have her Count the number of pills I had left in a six month old prescription in front of a nurse and a witness, and then three weeks prior to my next appointment. He required me to drive over an hour to do a urine test and make an appointment to do it with a nurse within 24 hours. I said enough is enough. there are better choices out there for a good PCP. read more

Update: 9:30 am. Second visit. Returned to ER. Shift change seemed to make a difference in care. Staff have been kind and caring. 4am: First visit. My spouse was seen at the La Crosse ER. Was sent away with worsening symptoms and told there was nothing they could do. I followed up with ER upon his return home. Nurse provided care instructions, however was already what we had been doing prior to ER visit. Very disappointed in the lack of empathy and care. read more

I give this review 2 stars only because there are a lot of caring staff at Gundersen, but that is it. If you have a complex health problem, dont go to gundersen. My husband has a collapsing spine from scoliosis and disc degeneration. On top of that, he has osteoporosis and not only do they not know why after running dozens of tests, his chronic severely pulling muscles from his scoliosis and the severe pain he is in, is breaking ribs. We have told gundersen REPEATEDLY what is going on. Have went in to ER, urgent care, told do doctors at his appts, but they treat him like he's just a junkie fishing for pain meds because he had to resort to LEGAL synthetic THC to cope with the pain (and that isn't even effective most days) and that it's all in his head. They do the absolute BARE MINIMUM and despite their bare minimum NOT HELPING, they refuse to do more. Oh yeah, forgot spinal stenosis causing crushed nerves and a bulging disc. All of this has been getting worse over the last 5 years but gundersen has the attitude of "just wait for him to die". La crosse, holmen, winona......doesnt matter. Better have private health insurance because medicare/medicaid will write you off to die and doctors are fine with it. read more

I had a very frustrating visit today. I had an eye appt at 2:20 and decided to go to Urgent Care as I have had a rash on my back for several months and was concerned it may have been a tick. I arrived at 12:20 and at 2:10 had to leave for my eye appt. I did not see a Dr. When I went to the desk to tell them I had to leave I expressed my frustration. I didn't raise my voice or say anything bad and the other man behind the desk, whom I was not talking to says " I don't know what you want US to do, we're full " I just left. I was admitted for septic arthritis of the shoulder. The nurse I had was very rude and mean. She told me you get up again without asking for help I will put an alarm on you. I was not allowed to clean myself, and I was made to put on a depends. I'm 49 years old, and I am quite capable of k knowing when I need to use the bathroom. It took staff forever to come to my room when I turned on my call light. The doctors, nurses, and other staff lack communication the whole time I was there. The day of discharge was a nightmare as well, as no one knew anything, and I was stuck there for an additional 4 hours. This was my worst experience ever while in a hospital. read more

Doctor metrópolis in behavioral health will pull your stimulant prescription if you make a single mistake in a Year long period, extremely punitive. He will not only pull your prescription but will do so AND not provide an alternative. I feel inclined to leave a review only because of all of the bad reviews on yelp. I have been with Gunderson for 10 years and their routine care is top notch. Before moving to La Crosse I had lived around the US, lived with and without health insurance, been to free clinics, been part of HMOs, and have never received the care that I receive at Gundersen. For 20 years I have suffered from migraines (2-3 a week). I thought it was something I would have to live with as Kaiser healthcare and multiple other doctors and specialists only told me to avoid certain foods and take medicine when I felt them coming on. My first appointment at Gundersen resulted in a referral to the "Headache Clinic" who had a goal of a migraine free life for me. I never thought it was possible but they sent me to PT, worked on strategies to reduced my migraines and were available when I needed them. If not for an office visit then through a secure web chat. I am down to 1 or 2 a month and it is all because of Gundersen's Headache Clinic. Gundersen is the only hospital in town with cancer treatment available making it easy if you need it. Sure - Mayo is only an hour away but do you want to make that drive 3 x week when you need lifesaving treatment? Do you want a specialist? Gundersen is part of the WI hospital and you know what? They will consult with mayo doctors if they need to. There are good and bad things about any hospital/healthcare system but we are lucky to live in La Crosse where we have TWO 5* hospitals. You just can't go wrong. read more

They have a wonderful app where the drs and nurses keep in touch and follow up after all procedures, tests, and visits. I will always recommend gundersen. A nurse in E.R. had the nerve to tell me to get out of a waiting room that she said was for triage patients only, despite the fact there were no signs present to discourage me from sitting there. Why? I could tell she had no problem believing that she was doing the right thing. Still, she handled the situation in a rather perfunctory manner, like I was totally unaware of the rules. Please don't get up in someone's business from the get-go, unless of course you're being accosted yourself. (There I was, reading a book, oh, no!) Generally, the staff at Gundersen is pretty cool, and I understand how this work can be really stressful, but it doesn't cost a lot extra to take a deep breath when it's needed. Do that and I promise you work will be more rewarding. Until then, don't take it out on us. read more

The standard of care actually received was excellent from Gundersen Oral Surgery here in La Crosse, WI. When it came down to getting an infected tooth out, they got it out relatively quickly and used enough anesthetic to completely numb me. I was actually pretty pleased in comparison to other dental places I've been. The whole thing was actually a pretty decent experience until afterward. However, I asked what pain meds they give if any at all and they told me to take OTC medications. "It's only one tooth, we only give OTC medications for one tooth." They said. Well, here we are, Day 2, and I've taken Tylenol and Ibuprofen as prescribed and I'm still in pain. My pain tolerance isn't particularly low, I'm ex-military(Army). I just think they have a problem with under-prescribing pain medications and anywhere that feels the same that does dental work. I have a suggestion. Figure out what people abuse them and don't prescribe them to them and prescribe them to the people who need them so I and other folks don't have to unnecessarily suffer. Thanks. read more

Patricia Wickert PA claims to only care about your pain but makes false promises and will pull your meds at the drop of a hat for the smallest reasons. She is uncompassionate and uncaring and will turn her back on you even when she knows you have real legitimate pain then leave notes in your My Chart that will almost guarantee that no other doctors will prescribe you the medication you need to function in day to day life with chronic pain. I had a multi level anterior AND posterior instrumentation & fusion surgery on my cervical spine 02/25/2022 and at 3 months post-op I was still having chronic pain but she continued to wean me off my pain meds ignoring my complaints of pain and withdrawal symptoms. Just ONE time I ran out a day early because she dropped my dose so much so fast so I took one of MY previously prescribed Suboxone strips I also tried CBD for 2 weeks because they push you to find non-opiate pain relief but don't tell you which ones you can't take, I admitted taking both and she drug tested me, everything I said I took showed up and nothing more but she pulled my meds and said I broke my opiate contract, the contract doesn't say you can't take leftover previously prescribed medications, she refused to prescribe me anymore and cancelled my future appointments. She also called me an addict and told me to find a treatment plan. She is viscous and toxic and seems to get pleasure out of taking away your meds when she knows you NEED them as she also did three weeks before I had my surgery when my disks had been eaten and my vertebrae were crumbling from the spinal infection I fought for 4 months before it finally cleared enough for surgery and was in the most pain I had ever felt, she said I had a failed drug test so I had that test sent in to be retested and it came back NEGATIVE the previous positive result was a mistake like I told her 100 times, I was with no pain management for 10 days and she still wouldn't put me back on my meds, it took a higher up PA to make her do it. Steer clear of this woman!! She shouldn't be allowed anywhere near pain management! read more

Came into the E.R about a cold I've had for about a month and a half now. Most of the staff was very helpful and polite but they made me wait two hours to see somebody as I'm coughing up blood getting light headed barely able to stand with a pounding headache. If I could leave a zero I would! Their billing is quite questionable. I went to my Wellness Visit like I do every year. Everything was good. A few weeks later I received my bill with a 2nd charge for my appointment. I had no clue why they were charging me an extra $165.00. When I called to enquire, they told me I must have asked an unrelated "Wellness check" question". When I asked specifically what question are they talking about, I didn't get an answer. Later I received a letter telling me that if I have an ongoing health problem and asked about that, it was considered a 2nd visit. I'm baffled as the Dr. asked me how my medication was working, not the other way around. When I asked why I was not informed of these new extra charges, I was told I could read them in the brochures in the lobby! Then I reminded her that due to covid there are no brochures in the lobby to read and I would like this charge taken off my bill because I didn't ask and I had no clue I would be charged. I was told no and that was it. Make sure you find out what is included in your "wellness check" so you don't get charged multiple office visits for one appointment. Beware! Gundersen will steal your money under the guise of "it's a law, we can charge that"! read more

I rarely leave bad reviews. Go ahead, check out my history. This review is not for the quality of the health services (which I found to be excellent). Nor is it for the people in customer service (or whomever answers the phones in the billing department). This review is for whomever is running the billing department, as their ineptitude and/or poor policies have been an endless source of headache for over 11 months. Basically, the health system - despite being within my insurer's network - is balance billing me for charges I do not owe under my insurance plan. They claim they are not in my insurer's network, but my insurer claims otherwise and displays as much on their website. Moreover, Gundersen has already accepted payments pursuant the insurer's provider contract. I would not ordinarily leave such a review were it not for Gundersen directly lying to me. This lie occurred when the issue in question could be described as a "misunderstanding." In an effort to resolve this issue, my insurer implored that Gundersen contact them. After initially refusing to call, someone at Gundersen claimed they called and and told me that my insurer agreed that Gundersen was not in their network. I called my insurer to confirm (because it contradicted the information my insurer had provided me), and not only had Gundersen made no such call, but my insurer had not changed its position. Essentially, if you do not want to be strong-armed for payments you do not owe, avoid this place (even if your life depends on it). read more

I have never received anything but top-notch service at Gundersen Lutheran. Let's see: three kids, treatment for medical and dental issues, one course of cancer treatment...I would rate Gundersen at the top in ANY area, including the Chicago hospitals where I grew up. The professionals at Mayo may be good, too, but why would anyone want to be admitted to a hospital that is 100 miles away, in Rochester? (Yes, I know that Mayo runs the Skemp hospital in town, but personal experience tells me that La Crosse patients are sent to Minnesota for MANY treatments and surgical stays.) I am sorry to see that one reviewer (from out of town) felt that Yelp was the place to address a one-time issue. The eye care center in Winona is a complete joke. Top to bottom front to back was a horrific experience of being treated like a piece of dirt. These people didn't even give me the right prescription and could care less. I went in for my annual physical which is covered 100% by Quartz Insurance. When the doctor asked if I had any other concerns I made the mistake of showing him my small finger that has arthritis. He looked at it for 10 seconds and agreed. Since this was not a part of the regular physical exam I was charged an additional $106.00 out of pocket for an office visit. Total bill $525.50 for a 20 minute visit. I feel that the Attorney Generals office needs to investigate the relationship between Gunderson Health and Quartz insurance. read more

We have an unfortunate need of quite a few of the pediatric specialists and feel very confident in their care. They have walked us through the whole diagnostic process and through MyCare and phone calls have always been available to us for any questions or concerns which may come up. I have also had ankle surgery. The staff in orthopedics have been wonderful to deal with as well. Our experience with Gundersen has been a positive one. read more

Can't get an appointment in less than six weeks when you have an issue!! Only way to get service is to go to the emergency room!! Find another place. An inpatient surgery was quoted at $3800 here, and just over $1000 elsewhere. My last visit for a med check and flu shot was $700. E.R. visit with 2 xrays was over $1400. If I could give this hospital minus 1000 stars, I would in a heartbeat. My 83-year-old grandmother had hip replacement surgery here this past Friday, and during her recovery time in the hospital, she has received nothing but terrible service from the nurses. I don't care that it's a holiday weekend, folks, you are running a hospital, NOT a bed and breakfast! (In fact, I think most bed and breakfasts would provide better care.) That means that when my grandma rings a nurse to go to the bathroom, one should come promptly; my grandma should not end up soiling herself. Also, you don't send in someone with only 6 weeks of training to check up on the blood pressure and heart rate of a patient who has just come out of anesthesia by herself. She clearly didn't understand what numbers to look for; she only knew how to read "the little red lights." Geesh. And your department who transfers patient to nursing homes for recovery after surgery should answer their phones over Labor Day Weekend. My grandma should not have to stay an extra day in your wretched, incompetent care because you can't find your transportation workers. Anyway, you had me fooled, Gundersen, with your shiny, friendly valets and well-stocked medical library for patients. For people in the greater LaCrosse/Winona area, go to Mayo. I enrolled in ProHealth Care Senior Preferred Elite because most of my doctors were in their Medicare Advantage plan and they had a 5 star rating. They only have that rating because it's virtually impossible to lodge a complaint with Medicare because you have to go through local and state agencies first. I couldn't have been more wrong about SP. Their phone reps don't give you accurate advice, it takes forever to get referrals to out of network doctors and services, and once you're approved they continually deny payments for labs and procedures. I'm to the point that SP is sending me so many claim denial letters that I'm surprised when they actually pay for something. It will take them months to pay while you are stressing out. ZERO! My dad was diagnosed with Liver cancer and placed in hospice. I am sharing with you the most recent issue. Gunderson took my father's Power of Attorney records to make copies and put on file. When they returned, for some reason, did not like his paperwork and they created new documents for him to sign, which he did. We asked for copies and were told once the doctors had signed we would be given copies. The transition into hospice was less than smooth. ( ex.-Your father will be released in 3 days. Drive 140 miles to home, only to get a call saying they are releasing him today...to me! WHAT?) This is a story in and of its own and noted only as an insight as to how we failed to follow up on getting copies of the legal documents. My father has now been in hospice for 2 weeks. Friday the Hospice Team called me and advised that they never received the Power of Attorney Documents from Gunderson when they transferred my dad. Due to this missing information, they can no longer discuss my father's care or condition. They do know he is dying right? Annoyed for sure, but I contact Gunderson and ask them to forward the documents. To my surprise, they told me they lost them. I asked them to at least send the original documents. The Records Department was going to research and call me back. I explained the absolute importance of handling this today. I did leave a message on Friday reminding them that I am out here and waiting for follow up. They never called back. I called Monday at noon. Waited on hold for the Records Department for 11 minutes only to be told I had to be transferred to the Power of Attorney Team. I received a message that advised they are out of the office for a week. Leave a message and they will call next week. This is a thing? Now I am mad. I call again and make a big enough stink that the Hospice Doctor calls me back and says she has good news and bad news. The bad news is that they lost the original documents too! The good news is that the Hospice Doctor and a Nun remembered that my dad signed these and they would simply vouch for us to the Hospice Team. I am speechless! I have never been Power of Attorney before, and I am not a lawyer but I have handled legal documents and this is not a solution. As I stated earlier, this is the current issue I am facing but could go on and on. Please, if you have to use Gunderson, beware. Question everything, Stay on top of what is happening, and if you have multiple doctors, you CAN ask for meeting with all of your doctors. They have saved my life more than once and I can not say anything bad about any of the doctors and trust me I have seen at least one in about every department. For the most part my care from nursing staff has been good but like every place you are going to find someone that you are not crazy about but then just maybe you as a patient is being difficult at the time. The obstetrics department absolutely would not give me a preliminary 8-week prenatal appointment because I will be moving away in 4 weeks. I have no other insurance set up in my new city, so who knows when I will finally see someone? 14 weeks pregnant, 18 weeks? They said they thought it would be easier for me to avoid "overlapping" services by establishing care with a single OB instead of transferring from one to another. I think it's more likely it's a hassle for them that they wish to avoid. They don't care that I may have concerns and questions, since I've never been pregnant before and don't know what to expect. This is very poor service, and I feel completely disregarded. If my insurance covered me at any other provider, I would go elsewhere, but it doesn't. So I'm stuck. read more

My college-aged son was seen by this facility. He called to schedule an annual visit, but scheduler put him in as an "office visit". Instead of receiving a physical which is 100% covered by insurance, he simply got a prescription re fill. This visit cost us $400 due to a clerical error. They are completely unwilling to work with us to re code the visit--simply blame my son for not speaking up. I will never recommend this facility. read more
