Mostly I agree with the comment about this being a hit or miss kind of place. Jason is always a HIT, and the others are a combo of hit/miss. However, I have been coming back for years and overall I am pretty satisfied. Today's cut from one of the gals looks good and her banter was friendly. If you don't mind having someone other than Jason work on you, then you'll be in and out in a flash. Otherwise you'll wait for quite a while for Jason. read more

Overall very happy with haircut, the two Asian guys that work in this shop are very well seasoned in their craft and do a really great job and for $16 haircut, that's pretty great. Everyone waits for Jason, who has more of a personality and he is funny, but if you want to get in and get out and have a nice haircut, the other guy does a great job too. read more

You can't make appointments, but they allow you to wait for a barber you like. It's supposed to first come, first served. I went in and got skipped over twice before walking out. For a mediocre haircut and the rudeness of the staff, I will never go back. read more

Great cut, nice people, convenient location & hours. Upon moving to Conshy two years ago, I needed to find a dependable barber for my very coarse & thick hair, and I quickly found that in Gus Butera's Barber Shop. My barber, Sal, is the best - always gives me a great-looking fade and cleans up my sideburns and neck with a straight razor. The place was recently renovated and is very clean, but still has that old school feel. The shop has weekend hours (both Saturday and Sunday) and Sal has even stayed a little after business hours when I am running late and need an "emergency cut." I used to work around the corner, and would go here because it just so easy. In the past, I used to get a decent haircut, but lately the service has really gone downhill. Other reviews are not joking when they say the stylists are more interested in the TV than the customer. On my last visit my stylist told me to hold on, while she scanned the channels to find something worthwhile. She seemed distracted and I had to tell her how I wanted my haircut several times before she proceeded to cut my hair too short. After that, I decided to give it one more shot. That was a mistake. i made sure I tried a different stylist, the distracted lady I went to last time, didn't even greet me as I walked in, she was too busy sitting in her chair, watching TV. I went to another stylist, I asked her not to use clippers, and she seemed confused by that. I told her what I wanted, tried to make myself clear. She also cut my hair way too short, even though I told her several times not to take too much off the top. She forgot I asked her not to use thinning shears, and went ahead and thinned out the front of my head . I asked her to stop, and she stammered something about having to even it out. In short, I was not listened too, and I got a sub-par haircut that was not worth what they charged. Lately, this place felt more like getting lunch meat from a deli counter than getting a haircut. This place needs to address these issues, or they will keep losing customers. I'm out. read more

This is my go to place for a haircut. Jason is the best (all week), but Rosy (Sunday, Monday and Tuesday) and Simon are good also. They had a guy in there who tries to sell oil changes and what not while he cuts your hair. If that guy is there I won't even enter the shop. The other two ladies are hit or miss with their haircuts. As others have said their chat ruins the experience. The shop has been redone and is attractive but they need to upgrade the waiting chairs. They also need to take credit cards. I have to stop at an atm just to get cash for a haircut. Jason, Rose and Simon will give extra attention such as trimming ear, nose and facial hair (within reason, full face beards are extra). They also will massage your neck and scalp. The oil change guy does not do this and the other two ladies will make a half hearted effort but fall short of the mark. Upgrade chairs and take credit cards and I would give five stars. read more

I was looking for a new place last Sunday to get my hair cut and figured I'd give this Gus's a try. I was a customer a few years ago but left after several bad hair cuts. I should have not returned. I told the barber that I just wanted a light trim and wanted him to use sissors only. He complained that "it would take me an hour if I cut your hair that way !" I should have left at that point. He turned me away from the mirror and proceeded to trim my hair with a comb and shaver. It took him 10 minuteds to finish and my hair was at "boot camp" length on the sides and unevenly clipped on the top. When I complained, he said " it's not as short as it looks it's just the gel holding it down!' I'll never go back and would warn anyone against going here! These people are arrogant and one can only wonder who they paid off to graduate from a barber school let alone get licensed. read more

I can't recommend this place because the barbers tend to be hit or miss here. Whenever I go there, there's a line out the door for Jason and the others' chairs are empty. I have never had the time to wait for Jason, but he seems to be the most popular. The other 4 barbers have varying degrees of capability and friendliness. read more

Perfect cut, not a hair out of place, for $15.75. They even razored off all the little stray hairs on his neck. They seem busy on the weekends so weekdays are probably your best bet. read more

If you are a guy looking for a high quality haircut, there is one person to go to: Jason. He's awesome. You will have to wait but he always does a great job here. Ask to go to him, otherwise you are rolling the dice on quality here. Jason does take appointsments but on Mondays only. You will have long wait times at peak hours (like lunch time, weekends etc). He's worth the wait and the prices are def competitive. One weakness aside from varying quality from other barbers is that they do not take credit card. read more

I went in on Tuesday for a TRIM, just to neaten up the back and sides, leave the top as it is. I came out with my hair shorter than a crew or buzz cut. Thought the barber was using the elsctric shears to trim around the ears. He was so fast that i was shorn before i could say no. I will NEVER go back. read more

I was running around REI and decided to get a quick haircut I walked into this place and the only free person was a little Asian woman, greeted me with a big smile so I said to myself what the hell. her name is Rosemary and she is normally at the end. she was nice, followed my directions trimmed me up she also trimmed my eyebrows used warm shaving cream and a straight razor to do my neck. after all that she hooked me up with a minute neck and shoulder rub. After i stood up I had a smile on my face and kind of felt high. easy to give her a 8-10 tip. she's a very sweet person. I been going to see her for the last year. always a good experience read more

I only let Liz cut my hair. I have very curly hair and wear it natural. She is one of the few barbers who can do a good job on my hair. The conversation is not great but I go for the haircut not the conversation. I may be able to get a good haircut elsewhere but for this price it is a bargain for quality work. I don't know about the other barbers there. She has been cutting my hair for about 10 years now. read more

These guys are the best! Before coming here about 4 years ago, I never had a barber that I could consistently trust. Simon and Jason are very good and take the time to make sure you get a good cut every time. I have also had the ladies and any of them still do a much better job then the Hair Cuttery or other barber shops I have tried in the area. Can be a long wait and I wish they were open later than 6, but other than that I can't complain! read more

Unless you're white (and in this case, white doesn't include Eastern European or Jewish heritage), you might want to steer clear of this place. Haircut was fine I guess, but in 20 minutes I got an earful of racism against at least 6 different people groups.
