When the new owners took over last year it has become so much better. Gus's is by far the best liquor/convenient store in town now. The new owners are out of Chicago and bring a lot of the big city to our small town. If you can't find it there just ask and they will try to get it for you. I love how they buckled down on the rif raf that have taken over Tucson. I feel save when I go in there any time of day or night. I went in a hurry to grab something to drink, there were 2 ladies chatting it up taking up both the cashiers. I, in a hurry ask " can you catch up on facebook" .. my statement exactly.. I didn't curse.. I didn't say anything rude.. but was informed that I was rude, and told not to come back.. Not only I was told they didn't want my business they added my wife to the list!. She wasn't even around for this.. I called, I was told I have been rude once in the 2 years I've shopped with them.. the employee didn't even say what I was rude about.. Here.. I'll be rude.. Your employees and your prices are high. Hard to believe that your employees carry guns.. Their judgement is clouded. I frequent Gus and generally find the staff pleasant and helpful. However on Tuesday 6 30 I had a disappointing encounter with Dave . Dave was on his knees stocking wine. He had a mask on but it was only covering his mouth. I asked if he could put the mask over his nose since I would be within 6 feet of him to select my wine. Dave became angry and told me he didnt have to put his mask over his nose. I told him I am a nurse and he is wrong. That he is contaminating customers by wearing his mask improperly. He actually was arguing and I walked away. Did not feel safe. read more

update, 06/10/2023 @ appx 9:40 p.m. went into the store today anticipating a different employee and assuming they would do their job as it pertains and is required by arizona's regulations on sale of scratchers. i was in a hurry and it's not too far from my so it was really convenient.. and a different person working. a young guy who stated he was the owners son, was immediately rude, short and confrontational. refused to cash out more than $50 after i handed him $100 in winning tickets as he claimed i didn't purchase my scratch tickets there.. only gave me $50 back and said he didn't cash the other $50.00 out. went to my vehicle and checked them in my app and they in fact we're cashed out. this store thought they were going to steal $50 from me like its no big deal.... went back into the store and asked about my other $50 & the young man said, "i didn't cash them out and you better leave because the owner is coming up here now & he's mean, as if i'd done something wrong in confronting him about my missing cash yet cashed out ticket.. refused receipt or to give me my tickets. racist owner appears behind the counter and states that i need to leave because i am no longer welcome in the store... this is fine because i've no intention of returning after a 2nd poor experience & as i was leaving, i stated, "that is okay you rascist piece of shit, i will make sure to file a complaint with the state lottery board, state consumer affairs department & the attorney general's office not to mention the health department". he said, laughing, "go ahead, they won't do anything, like they never do". i responded, "go fuck yourself bitch, we'll see about that". he responded by following me out to my car and spraying my car with pepper spray 3 time's of which i recorded with my phone & then i called the police as i left. unbeknownst to me, he had called them as well and lied to them claiming that i shoplifted and pulled a knife on him.... which is so completely false. conveniently, the videotape that he says he has, doesn't record..(??) i'd never waste my time or freedom with such an unnecessary offense, let alone on such despicable trash. no matter, i was detained & released with no charges after police questioned me & took pics of my car. i can't believe this scum "serving" people of this community thinks he can lie and commit such an atrocity as to have somebody's life ruined simply because of his ego & the fact he got caught trying to steal from & take advantage of a "customer". you fucked with the wrong guy gussy boy... you're about to get more legal trouble than you can even imagine.. 34 stores +1 come to your new daddy for a man who can so blatantly attempt to manipulates the law, you should know how this will turn out for you 05/28/2023 the owner is a racist ignorant fucking asshole! do not shop here! this store also puts water in their alcohol. i didn't even realize it until i was reading the reviews on here and got home tonight and checked my bottle!! went into the store and he was using racial slurs as he was "casually" talking to me! slurs towards arabs and indians about how if you purchase scratch tickets from their stores, they won't cash them out so why should he? like wtf dude? did i ask? ironic how this dude just did the same thing to me though and refused to cash my tickets out because he didn't think i purchased them there... i actually did, not that it makes a difference... your store and its sale of liquor, tobacco and lottery is literally regulated by the state of arizona, so your attempts to pick and choose the service that you want to provide in regards to these sales is a direct violation of arizona state law on the grounds of discrimination... that's a pretty big offense that you might want to read up on....asked who the owner was because i was going to file a complaint and this dumb fuck starts mouthing off how he's the owner and he owns 34 other stores in chicago. good for you gus, you fucking pos, go back to chicago then! read more

I love going here. They have a great variety of beer, and they even take requests for beers that they don't currently carry! Every time I go there, the staff is really friendly and nice. They also give me a free shooter with every purchase which is cool. read more

One of the skeezier businesses I patronize but this is an admittedly skeezy neighborhood. Ah, home. Most of the clientele have a desperate look about them, and the store manages to appear unsanitary even while reeking of disinfectant. I have never actually bought liquor here, but I do periodically stop in for cheap lighters and rolling papers. Once I bought ice, but never again. I'm sure it's OK for lowering the temperature in an enclosed space, but you wouldn't want to put it in your drinks. In Gus's favor, the people who work here are friendly and they offer a variety of alcoholic libations at reasonable prices. But, in my mind, Gus's will always bear the moniker my husband and I gave it when we moved in: the crack whore liquor store. You really do see some colorful characters here. If you're in midtown and a sign that offers 24 cans of Bud Light for $11.99 gets your heart racing, this is the shop for you. read more

Did a crime ever happen at the store in 2010? At night? I remember coming to Tucson and by BF at the time drove up to the store at night and there was a little old white woman alone at the counter talking to a taller male while another short stocky make was standing in front of the door holding it shut motioning for us to go away.... Called the cops but never got called back... Always wondered if we interrupted a robbery or something worse. We drove around and came back and no one was there... Just curious... read more

The Gus' on 1st Ave is really stinky, of cigarettes, INSIDE, but the other store on Grant is even worse. I have been in both stores over the last 4 years at least 2 times each and it never changes. I would like to support a locally owned store, but I just can't stand it again. I am going to go to BevMo. read more
