It's a very popular chain in Sydney (maybe Australia?) now, and that's because - like all popular fast-food places - it's reliable. They churn out decent but unremarkable burritos, nachos, and assorted Mexican-replica food minute after hour after day. The portions are big enough for it to just feel like value for money if you're quite hungry. If I stop it's typically nachos for me, less messy than some of the other choices. I was very hesitant about eating from Guzman Y Gomez as the fast food appearance put me off a little, I am a huge fan of Mexican food, but takeaway Mexican usually puts me off. I was pleasantly surprised with Guzman Y Gomez breaking the cycle. Although the menu is nothing out of the ordinary (which if fine) and the food is not the best Mexican I have ever eaten, it is still very good and I would absolutely go back. I ordered the Beef Guerrero Burrito, which is a mild slow roasted beef option and was immediately impressed to discover the use of shredded beef, rather than mince, also the portion was very large. The only problem was the venue is small and it is not the kind of food you can really eat while walking along, as it is a little messy, so it is a bit tricky to find somewhere to sit. Guzman Y Gomez is perfect for a quick bite or a Mexi-hit. They've got a bunch of outlets around the traps with a focus on fast food made healthy. I've gotten a little addicted lately, but it's just so. Damn. Good. Cheap + fast + delicious = what more could you want mid-week? You can order online, but that just seems super lazy and rather pointless when it takes two minutes to make it fresh in-store. They also offer catering. The corn chips with guacamole are dangerously addictive, as are the vegetarian black beans. The gluten-intolerant can still join in, with quesadillas and soft corn tortilla tacos on offer. I'm a massive fan of the burritos, which are $6.50 for mini (which are actually huge) and $10.50 for regular. Fancy marinated, grilled chicken with tomatillo salsa? Try the spicy chicken guerrero. As a long time Californian traveling through Australia, Guzman y Gomez in Newtown immediately piqued my interest. I was a bit skeptical as Mexican is my favorite type of cuisine and I've yet to come across quality Mexican food outside the US or Mexico before. But the place was apparently named after two Mexican fellows and even had pictures of Mexicans on the signage. Why not give it a shot? How bad could it be? The answer is really bad. A food experience so bad, in fact, that my first instinct was to check if Yelp had an Australian site so I could express my displeasure. My first clue should have been the signage promoting the gluten free and vegetarian friendly menu. Hmmm... Don't remember that kind of signage the last time I was in Ensenada. Then in the condiment section where Mexican restaurants traditionally have all their salsa, pico de gallo, and peppers... Guzman y Gomez had a trio of tabasco sauce dispensers. Seriously? I should have walked out right there, but I guess deep down I am an optimist at heart. I ordered one each of the steak chipotle, pork chipotle, and barramundi (a type of Australian whitefish) tacos. They each came in a wrapped in a cold, soggy, corn tortilla. Each was topped with a flavorless pile of boiled black beans. Both the tortillas and beans were vegetarian friendly, though I would have quite preferred them to be fried in delicious Mexican animal lard like they are other parts of the world such as Mexico. The tacos were also topped with "pico de gallo", which Australian people have apparently taken to mean watery chopped up tomatoes without peppers or anything that might add a semblance of flavor. The pre-cooked steak and pork for my tacos were pulled from tupperware containers where they were marinating in GYG's special "chipotle marinade". Maybe something is lost in translation overseas, but I could swear from the look and taste of my tacos that their "chipotle marinade" is just like what we in the States call "dirty water". What's more whereas these tacos had been termed on the menu as "spicy" , I would have thought the term "wretch inducing petri dish experiment" would be more fitting. If there was one thing I was confident that the Aussies would get right, it was the fish tacos. After all, there are fish and chips joints on every block. How difficult could it be to throw one of those bad boys in corn tortilla with some cabbage and salsa? Imagine my dismay when they brought out the fish taco grilled Wahoo fish taco style! YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS, MATE! And in a cruel twist of irony the only thing on my plate that was supposed to be moist and tender was actually dry and tough, and yet flavorless all the same. In summary, the tacos from Guzman y Gomez are an abomination, an affront to the term "Mexican food", and in fact about as Mexican as Emilio Estevez. In my travels overseas, I've had some truly awful Mexican food. In China, I once ate at a place that used tortillas made from some kind of rice flour and gave me ketchup in lieu of salsa. I have a confession to make. I tried this places YEARS ago when it first opened in 2005ish or thereabouts, and I didn't like it. I got this little craptastic $12 burrito and a snooty lecture about how sour cream is not authentic Mexican... LOL... (Newsflash: BURRITOS are not authentic Mex... TRUE STORY! But anyways...) So I had a little grudge against them that lasted almost a decade, lol. BUT! Tonight, I had 3 tacos. I chose one each from the spicy meat choices... chicken, beef, pork. They were decent tacos! Not the best EVER, but certainly respectable. And I reckon most of the so-called Mexican food I've had in Australia has been less than respectable. I think I like the steak the best, but they were all decent. A taco is supposed to be a double wrapped corn tortilla, meat, some onion, cilantro and a squeeze of lime. Mess with that simple formula for a great taco at your own peril. Thats what I was hoping for and that's what I got. I had the chicken burrito - it tasted like a chicken burrito funnily enough. It wasn't something that made my tastebuds sing in a heavenly joyful way (like the Mexican places I ate at in Texas did). The restaurant is on King street and you can sit inside or outside. We sat along the window looking onto the street for our dinner. However it's Mexican. And there's so many mex places popping up at the moment and they all do the same kind of food that all tastes about the same. Which leads me to believe that there is more to Mexican food than a burrito, quesadilla or nachos. And until I find a Mexican restaurant that serves me something that blows my taste buds away they aren't getting 5 stars. read more

I've never been particularly crazy about Mexican food, but after reading some of the great reviews it got here, when I passed it in King's Cross, I decided to give it a try. And I'm so glad I did! Being a Mexican-food-novice, I stuck to the classics and ordered some nachos. Oh my god. It was as if heaven itself had set up shop in my mouth. I couldn't even stop! We were running late for a club opening, and I was just sitting there, stuffing my face progressively faster, completely unwilling to leave before I could finish every morsel. Mexican food is becoming quite popular in Sydney but Guzman Y Gomez have been flying the flag down here for a while. It's flagship store on King Street in Newtown is a little beauty and popular with not only locals but visitors too who come for a burrito or taco and like to wash it down with a beer or if you're feeling game, a margarita! I've been there a few times and find it hard to go past a burrito. I know I should branch out and try what else they have to offer but I don't want to. I like the burrito's! Why I mention this store is because it satisfied my craving for nachos. Now nachos is definitely not the only thing on the menu, don't get me wrong. But it came through with a creamy, cheesy, beany bowl of nachos and I got my hands straight into it. There was some fantastic guacamole used as well. Also on the menu are enchiladas and tacos, and the bread used is fresh to wrap up the ingredients. The good bit about Guzman is that the service is fast. This is borderline fast food, I get that, but it's priced economically and is starting to get a following even here in Australia. Guzman is good for a casual group of friends after the movies or before going out for a drink, it is light hearted jovial atmosphere to this shop that will keep people coming back. read more

Tacos were pretty good, tried fish, beef and chicken. The chicken was pretty gristly but the other two were good. Unfortunately the salsa was mostly just tomato, no extras like guac or sour cream. Barramundi burrito is delicious. Price seems about standard for a Sydney burrito and I find GYG to be far more flavourful than Mad Mex. I'm just not sure why brown rice is $1 extra. This is the first tex mex outfit I've come across in the world that charges more for brown rice which makes zero sense because white rice is made from brown rice. read more

Pulled pork burrito. "giggity" This is really the only true Taqueria ive come across in Australia.

First of all let me say that I LOVE GYG however this is not the best GYG store. The staff aren't as friendly or caring here as at other stores and a few times now they have messed up something on me/my friend's orders. Upside is I did fill in a feedback form and GYG got in touch with me and sent me vouchers and apologised. However I am still disappointed when I go to this store. If you want a really good GYG experience go to the Cronulla, Pitt St (lvl 5 in the Zara building) or Bondi Westfield stores. Also don't go to the Manly store either - that is even worse than Newtown. :( read more

Vegetarians, I will let you in on a secret about GyG Newtown: it's not on the menu any more, but if you ask for a tofu burrito they will make it for you. Also it will be the best dang tofu burrito you've ever eaten. I don't know what they marinate/grill that stuff in but it is a taste sensation. This one time I asked for the tofu burrito and realised when I got home that they'd given me the plain ol' vege one in error. No big deal; it wasn't gonna stop me going there again. Now the guy working the grill that night knows I /always/ get tofu and he must have figured out after I left that there'd been a mix-up. Next time I went in without me even saying anything he /insisted/ on giving me the burrito on the house to make up for it. What a guy! What a place! What service! The guac and chips are pretty great as well. I know for anyone who's eaten Mexican in, well, Mexico or maybe even California the Mexican options in Sydney can be pretty ordinary. GyG is my favourite based purely on the tofu burrito (I can't speak to their meat options) and I place them well above competitors like Mad Mex and Beach Burrito Company. read more

Let me scream this from the rooftops (er, I mean 3rd floor terrace): Guzman y Gomez freakin' rules! If I could meet these two hombres, I would shower them with doting compliments and rave reviews. Hell, I might even bring them a piñata. On many a homesick night, I have drown my sorrows in a spicy pork chipotle mini burrito with guacamole ($7.50) or a trio of soft shell tacos ($10.50). G y G is positioned perfectly among the Newtown pubs and bars and is almost open late enough to drunk eat your heart out. I suggest starting at nearby Freaky Tiki on a Tuesday and having some cheap drinks and then heading to Guzman afterward. Just make sure you don't bring all your friends, because there won't be anywhere to sit. Although, I guess you could always pull the "hoes in Kings Cross" maneuver and sit in a row on the curb. Just make sure you have the sideways lean down or you'll end up with a lap of hot sauce. read more
