I really appreciate the personal touch from Gwen's. Our groomer is Bree and she is so kind, patient and tolerant with our dogs. Once I brought in our standard poodle and he was such a mess! I didn't realize how matted he was from two months of no grooming. Bree was so sweet and kind, she cleaned him up and called me to tell us that his tail would have to be shaved because it was so matted. She wanted to make sure it was alright with us. I know that our dog has great and loving care when he is there. I schedule his appointments early in the morning, around 730am with Bree. Our dog is the only one Bree works on at this time and he's usually done in 2 hours. This is unlike PetSmart in which you drop off your dog in the am and then pick up in the pm because they do so many dogs at once. I know our dog is not going to be placed wet and cold into a crate while the groomer works on another dog. We are from the West Coast and when we moved here we didn't know where to go for grooming. We had two poodles but one has since passed over the Rainbow Bridge. Poodles need good and patient groomers. Gwen's has been great with my request not to have our white poodle be shaved with a size 40 razor since he is sensitive and gets skin burns easily. The cons are that they are disorganized with scheduling. There have been several times when I have scheduled an appointment, I called to confirm, and then being told there is no appointment. We were very spoiled by our previous groomer on the West Coast. She was an excellent groomer. She did not require yearly immunizations for our dogs. Another con is that we must have yearly immunizations for our dogs. If you are a holistic pet owner and you want to vaccinate every 3 years, then you could not bring your dog here. On a scale of 1-10, Gwen's grooming is a 7. It is not excellent. I have had two excellent groomers in the past. It is not bad grooming either. I would rate this as above average. I can live with the cons as long as I know my dog is safe and being groomed individually. I am confident Gwen's will take excellent care of my dog. read more

I've never posted something like this about a local business, typically I'd have a conversation with said business in private- however, do NOT take your pets to: Gwen's Pet Grooming Inc. - Cedar Rapids I wanted to share our recent experience with Gwen's Pet Grooming who we were referred to for our 2.5-year-old, 7lb Pomeranian. When we picked her up, they made us pay before handing her over. Right after, they casually mentioned, "Sorry, we accidentally gave her brush burn. We didn't do the Teddy Bear cut because there are different variations, but next time we'll get it right...oh and she has sores all over her back from the burn" My husband immediately requested to be refunded and asked to speak to the owner, but we weren't refunded, and the owner hasn't called. Our dog was starting to show signs of distressed, so we decided to leave so we could assess her and take appropriate next steps. We have been able to assess her and found she has red spots all over her back and at least four open wounds that are still bleeding and dried blood on her back where she had been bleeding. The parts that are open and bleeding she won't let us get picture's because yelps and tries to nip at us when we touch her near those areas- which is so out of character for her. *She lets us get a good look at them at first, we did have to hold her down because she was yelping* We're now taking her to the vet to get checked out. I really regret not doing more research before trusting this place. Be careful where you take your pets- even if it's a referral from a friend. The pictures are of the red marks that aren't open wounds- if, and IF this is "brush burn" they had to have been incredibly forceful on a 7lb dog. I'm sure I'll be blocked by Qwens within the hour, that seems to be the way she rolls instead of dealing with situations head on. read more

The woman was 30 min late- then he was caged and got a terrible scratches on his snout. They still charged the extra for not being caged- even though he was. My parents have been loyal customers at Gwen's Pet Grooming for over a decade, entrusting their beloved dog, Zeek, to their care. Unfortunately, recent events have left us deeply disappointed and heartbroken. On Saturday, June 1st, Zeek was left in a kennel for hours, clearly distressed before being groomed at Gwen's. They never mentioned he was unwell or distressed. Tragically, he passed away shortly after returning home from the groomer on the way to the emergency vet. The lack of empathy and compassion from Gwen's during this heartbreaking time has been disheartening. Despite reaching out to Gwen's, my parents received no returned call, no letter, and no sympathy. For a place that claims to care about animals, this silence speaks volumes. Over the years, my parents have spent thousands of dollars at Gwen's, expecting not just professional grooming but also genuine care for their furry family member. Sadly, that expectation was not met. Zeek, who was groomed regularly every 6-8 weeks, had only been featured twice on Gwen's Facebook page despite his long history with the establishment of over a decade. If you truly care about your pets, I urge you to seek grooming services elsewhere. It's a bad practice to have their services paid for including a tip before you see your dog. Earlier this year I had our mini schnauzer in for a groom. I had been taking the same pet there for 5 years. This time when I picked her up I paid, including a tip; we waited for someone to bring her out to us for 20-30 min and it was past 5pm when they close. I was mad and worried as I knew something had happened with her. When I finally saw her she had been cut by her eye, which they had just stopped the bleeding. The owner, Gwen, said, "She only got cut once". She said she was figety and that was probably why. I got her home and found she was uneasy with whoever it was that was trying to groom her because her ear had been cut. Not only that, but the skin was cut off the top of one of her toes. Gwen, how could you have someone cutting on my pup that was not trained? I really liked going to Gwen's shop but I just can't do it anymore. Very irresponsible and negligent. read more

This shop is extremely unethical and not at all knowledgable. They will stated that " in my professional opinion your dog need to be shaved. No one in the right mind and have half of a brain cell will shaved a double coated dog that wasn't horrifically matted. Look at the image and please tell me if my dog is matted or not. So please don't use that the dog is matted as an excuse to your save time and resources on top of making easy money instead of spending time brushing the dog. We already brush our dog regularly if you would like to see the picture of how much fur we got off of him let me know. I have that, too. This dog received acupuncture regularly. Matted fur will prevent him from getting treated. So stop lying and started that it was the last resort. read more

I have taken my Zoey there for three years no problem. Then one groomer decided to cut off her 5 inch fluffy tail and never asked or anything, and it was chopped not in a nice manner. I almost cried!! No appology nothing. Also, leaving a tip before getting to see the finished job is unreal. They did not like that I wanted to see her before leaving a tip. Unfortunately, I did not see her before paying during this trip. :( So I cooled down and thought I would try them again, well I was banned from bring Zoey back!! They said I was always complaining.... what!!! I never complained before her tail was hacked off. Asked for the owner to call me... That never happened. My family is so very happy to support Gwen's Pet Grooming, and to confidently recommend them to all of our friends. Gwen and Sarah Beth coordinated grooming our dog, Penny. Penny always looked so beautiful after her spa day! They trimmed the hair in her ears, cleaned her eyes and trimmed her little face, shaped her paws and cut/ground her nails, and expressed her glands after bathing and drying her at almost every visit. They even alerted us to times when Penny had ear infections, and recommended a vet to treat her. Penny always smelled so wonderfully clean when we picked her up, and we could tell all the staff had pampered her because she seemed so happy. I took my dog there and she is a shar pei. We told them that she is not crate trained. They said no problem we can handle it. My husband got a phone call 20 minutes after dropping her off that he needed to come get her now because she was being disrupted. My husband gets there and pays $70 bill for just bath and nail grinding. They had to put her first in front of other dogs. For a grooming place, u think they listen but didn't. Plus, u also think that be able to handle a dog period. If u going to have a grooming place, u see that dog on the appt books never had that breed u might want to do research. This groomer had been cutting our Yorkie for 5 years but no longer has our business. This last grooming was unacceptable. After giving specific instructions regarding what we wanted done, he has spots where he was not groomed at all and other spots where he was shaved to bare skin on his face & nose. I have been taking my Westin Louie to Gwen's for 2 years now and for the most part he always looks great. Today, I took him in for a 5:30 appointment and didn't get a call. I went back at 8 pm when they close to get him and he's "drying". He hadn't even been groomed yet. Gwen says they tell everyone it's a 3-4 hour process and they groom over 10,000 dogs a year. Who cares and what's the point of an appointment if they don't groom your dog. AND- they raised the price. Gwen's says I should Consider express grooming for another $15. They shaved my Wheatens beautiful curly tail after very specific instructions not to, lied about the interaction when we dropped dog off, and took over a month and three phone calls and a personal visit to get our money back. I know lots of people complain about the cost of pet grooming, but having worked along side pet groomers in the past, I have no complaints and would gladly pay that price again for what the staff here does and more importantly their attitudes. Everyone was so friendly from the moment I walked in with my cat. He's a long hair cat with no tail and he had a few mattes that I didn't want to cut out myself and he came out looking awesome! This was our first time at Gwens who was recommended to us by our vets office ,we usually take the dogs to some place else but they were booked to far out and our dogs needed to be groomed , so we decided to give gwens a try. It seemed nice and the groomers seemed friendly, My dogs a Lhasa apso and shih tsu are old girls one is almost 14 and the other almost 16 , due to there age they have some medical conditions. My little shih tsu has a heart problem , and I told the groomers there to please be careful with both dogs because it was new for them they are old girls and they both have certain medical issues. The groomers that took my dogs seemed nice and assured me that they would be well taken care of. After picking up my dogs and getting them home I noticed specifically that my shih tsu was acting very skittish and anxious, she was breathing heavy and would start to shake anytime someone moved , her nose was dry and would shake and breath heavily as if in pain or highly anxious as well as lack of energy . My little shih tsu is usually full of energy and happy so I decided to check her out and found sores all over her stomach. It will take time but she will be fine. This was a first and last visit to Gwens. Because nothing was reported to me about a possible injury if they had just said something had happened because I know my puppy's can be a handful this would be different but like I said we will never be using Gwens again. read more

Last time I was here, I overheard a man paying for his dog's grooming. The price the employee told him he owed was unexpectedly $15 more than his typical price - for the same service. He told the employee, and she ended up charging him the price he had paid for his previous grooming. I have noticed they are not cutting my dogs hair as short as I have asked them to. I think that they do this so I have to bring my dog back to be groomed more frequently, and they rush me out the door without a chance to ask them to fix it. Compared to other groomers in the area, they are definitely overpriced. They do a decent job grooming, but I will be taking my dog somewhere else from now on. read more

I've taken my Pomeranian there several times in the last year. Most of the time it's been a good experience; however, the last two have not! The last time he was there they ask me if I wanted to do the usual. I was happy they kept record in the system and said yes! After paying they brought my dog out and he had a horrendous lion's mane. In the past they've asked if I wanted them to do a mane and I stated each time that I did not. How they thought this would be his 'usual' is beyond me. A couple days later I went to remove the bows they tied in his hair and there were several spots where his hair was horribly matted. Again in the past this was never a problem so I brushed it off as a one time thing. Maybe the groomer was having a off day.... Anyway so I called to make an appointment yesterday to get my dog's ugly mane and awful mates removed. They said no problem that they could get me in at 8, 9, or 9:30. I went with 9. This morning I get a call saying they're overbooked and can't get me in. What the heck?!? I only made the appointment the day before; why'd you even tell me you had 3 openings????? After all that I just feel it's no longer worth a shot at giving them another chance. read more

I don't know even know where to start, with Gwen's unprofessional behavior, which consisted of verbal abuse and inability to hear out the customer's constructive criticism , or with the facilities lack of appropriate accommodations to suit a larger dog, both during and after grooming. I had taken my smaller dog there on one prior visit and received an urgent call right after grooming that he needed to be picked up immediately. As a busy professional, this was not convenient. I have never had something like that happen at other groomers. The same thing happened today. They were unable to fit my St Bernard into a tub, so placed him in a restrictive cage. He barked and they demanded he be picked up immediately. She then called with ad hominem attacks directed at myself and my nanny ( Gwen will have to look that one up. Oops! Looks like she rubbed off on me). She did not even allow me to speak or state my case when I tried to voice my concerns. Her lack of professionalism and overall conduct speaks volumes about her character. I only went there because my usual place was booked, and Gwen always has openings for obvious reasons read more
