I had heard some very nice things about gymkana from around town and had never gone because I lived further away. I had made the appointment and I had received a notification a few moments later reminding me of the date and time. Which for me is an added bonus since I usually keep my entire schedule in my cellphone. I had arrived abit early for my appointment and was treated to a few drinks from their mini-fridge which had soda, coffee, and some alcoholic choices as well. I opted for a Mike's hard since I had never gotten a drink when getting my hair done. I had my appointment with Ashley and I have to say all of the praise on here for her is completely warranted! She is so easy to talk with and is so helpful and friendly when it comes to helping with style choices (which was wonderful because I'm usually really awkward when it comes to talking with hairstylists). Not to mention her skill level is absolutely fantastic. As somebody with fine hair it's so difficult to find someone who can cut your hair and leave you with enough to look stylish while keeping it looking thicker and she did just that! I'll definitely be making this my new one stop shop for all my hair needs. read more

I moved here from California earlier this year. I was recommended Ashley by a friend that had just moved away. I am so lucky for this recommendation! Ashley is an amazing stylist with an incredible personality and vibe. I have had my hair done at many salons in b8g cities and overseas so Ive dealt with all types of stylists. Ashley can do anything from great blow dry styles,cuts,colors and even extensions. Many stylists have a hard time with fine tuning blonde shades.Ashley exceeded all my expectations-my mom goes to her as well and her hair looks amazing too. I just got my exstensions done by her and could not be happier with the results.I also love the atmosphere of the salon-it is very chic and stylish but you feel very comfortable .It has a nice location downtown with access to its own free parking. I chose this salon from the reviews here on Yelp. What a great decision. Lauren listened to everything I said and came up with just what I was looking for in a cut and color. The cut is so easy to maintain. Many times I have left a salon looking great and never could get that style again myself. Lauren was very knowledgeable on products appropriate to my hair type, but was not pushy at all in trying to get me to purchase. The salon is laid back and relaxing. From the moment I walked in the door it felt like I had been a client there before. I was immediately warmly welcomed, I am an older woman with short hair so I frequently feel out of place at many salons-not so at Gymkana Blue. I had been going to the same stylist for years. I wasn't quite satisfied with how my hair turned out ever and a friend recommended that I tried going to Gymkana Blue. I booked an appointment with Ellen online for the very next day! I typically have to wait a week or two to get in with my usual stylist. Ellen asked me questions to get a good idea of what I wanted. She was friendly, inviting and very welcoming. She cut my hair exactly how I described and took the time to ensure that I was really satisfied. She provided me tips for styling my new hairdo and recommended products that she thought would be beneficial. The salon itself is beautiful and they provide refreshments if you would like them! I'm new to Dubuque and I was in desperate need of a color/cut. I googled best place for a haircut and Gymkana Blue came up. I'm so glad it did. I made an appointment with Ellen and she did a great job on my hair. I don't think I've ever had a stylist take so much time styling my hair after a cut. She even took the time to talk about my next color/cut and how I could change it up for something different. Ashley is talented and tasteful. She's so easy to talk to and my hair always looks perfect when I leave. Sometimes I give clear instructions and sometimes I don't know what I want, but I always like the cut and color she gives me. I really don't know what else to say about it... there is wine...? Even my husband, the previous king of great clips, goes here despite it being more expensive and requiring an appointment. That is a REAL recommendation. read more

She spent time listening and understanding what I wanted and then demonstrated some amazing skills, cutting my hair both wet and dry to get it just right--which I have missed and really appreciated.
