Today I had the most incredible massage with Brooks. He is an expert at his craft and it's obvious that he's incredibly passionate about his work and aims to provide the best hour of your day. I was so impressed by his knowledge of massage therapy and his level of commitment to his clients. While I generally do not talk during a massage, I talked the entire way through this massage with Brooks and really enjoyed it. I'll be coming back to see him again very soon! My mom and I did the spa day retreat package here, which included a pedicure, facial, and massage. I enjoyed all three immensely. Take their advice and sip a mimosa while getting your toes done! They use vegan nail polish, so you don't have to feel any guilt about indulging. My massage was outstanding; my masseuse used pretty heavy pressure as I requested and did an excellent job at stretching and relieving all my points of tension. It was awesome. The only complaint I had is the enormous length of time they leave you in their "relaxation room." Each service we booked was supposed to be 50 minutes, but we ended up spending more than an hour and a half for each appointment, just because of all the time spent sitting in the room. They finally took him back for the message at 3:30 no sorry to keep you waiting. At 4:25 he came out, I wasn't happy with the money I paid for 1 1/2 hrs and he got 55 min. And I gave a nice tip before hand. Pisses me off. The women's room had t been cleaned in awhile. There was a beer bottle laying on top of waste basket that was already full to the point of overflow. We booked a stay at the Hotel Julien just to visit the spa for my birthday. We traveled here from out of town. The day of our appointment, we went downstairs and they asked us, "Didn't you get our message? We had to cancel your appointment." And everyone standing around the front desk looked absolutely miserable. They could not accommodate us at any other time during our stay. We understand that things happen, but they made absolutely no effort to make it up to us. No credit for the spa for another visit. No credit for our stay. Nothing. Any simple gesture would have made it up to me. Maybe it's for the best that they couldn't accommodate us, but we will not be back. read more

Went here with my daughter during the holiday break. We each purchased the "Spa Day Retreat" package, This includes a Potosa massage, a bliss facial and a ritual pedicure. Unfortunately we waited to book a little too long and they were very booked during the holidays. The woman we spoke with on the phone was super helpful though. She really went out of her way to book something that would work with schedule. We ended up having the facial and pedicure on one afternoon of our stay and the massage the morning of our departure. This worked out fine for us and I really appreciate them accommodating us. The spa itself is fairly small but the staff incredibly nice! We were greeted warmly and given lockers and robes. Then we were escorted into their relaxation room. Dimly lit with a gas fireplace, comfy lounge chairs, fruited water and dry granola cups all calming touches. The only suggestion here is that other spas require either no talking or "spa voices" in their relaxation rooms; I would suggest that they institute the same rule here. It's not very relaxing when there is a large group of other women that are more into the party than the relaxation. My facial was excellent! Maybe the best that I have ever had. The pedicure was nice as well. Wish that they had a better color selection for the polish. The massage was fine but in this case I have had much better. It was certainly relaxing but even though I asked for medium pressure it was more like light pressure. Also, the massage rooms are along the hallway that lead to the hotel pool. At one point during my massage there was a young child in the hallway yelling and banging against the wall. Certainly not an ideal situation. I don't envision myself visiting Dubuque anytime again but if I do find myself there I would certainly make time to spend at Potosa Spa again! read more

Three of us all got deep tissue massages and we were very impressed with this Spa. The massage therapists were excellent. From entering the facility to the very end you are treated with the utmost professional care. Highly recommend. Next time we visit Dubuque we will plan ahead better and make our bookings in advance. The Potosa Spa is located in the basement of the Hotel Julien. As far as day spas go, it is not the best I have been to, but they are doing a lot right. The reception is very friendly, and the women's locker room feels like a spa locker room should: clean and somewhat upscale with handy items like hair elastics and other convenient products. The lounge was one of my favorite features. They'll ask you to come 20 to 30 minutes early and I suggest you follow their request. Before your massage time starts, you will get extra time to relax in the lounge room, which had the most comfortable leather lounge beds I have ever tried. The lights are nicely dimmed, with a warm fire adding to the relaxing vibe in the room. I had an 80 minute Potosa Massage with Stefanie, and her technique was exactly what my body needed. I've found that a lot of massage therapists want to dig too deep too fast, and I end up in pain and kind of wanting the massage to be over. But Stefanie took the time to understand what kind of technique (Swedish) and pressure (medium) I liked, and I walked away with a body that was no longer in a lot of pain! I would definitely recommend requesting Stefanie if you are thinking of trying out the spa. Plus, she has a great 'table-side manner'. I know they do pedicures/manicures/facials here too, but I can only vouch for the massage therapy. Their full menu is available on their website: www.potosaspa.com Tip: If you are a guest of the hotel, they give you a 15% off coupon, so that is a nice little bonus. Tip2: They don't let you tip your massage therapist in cash. You have to pay it to the spa, and they assured me it all goes to the therapist. What a weird policy. My first time to encounter that, and It kind of puts me off. I would have deducted a star, but I didn't want to be overly dramatic about it! Snowpocolypse 2015 was enjoyed receiving a milk & honey scrub & massage by the very talented Sarah. The roads were horrible so I wasn't sure if anyone would be able to make it to the spa to open up, I probably wouldn't have. The lovely lady that greeted me said someone spent an hour trying to pull her car out then she had someone else give her ride. Dedicated employees! We stayed at Hotel Julien so we didn't have a drive. The spa thought out every detail! I would highly recommend checking out the milk & honey massage. My husband and I were able to schedule a pretty last minute couples massage while in Dubuque. The setting is relaxing and very upscale feeling. Front desk customer servce was fabulous. I liked the fully stocked locker room and shower if you didn't want to feel oily after your massage stocked with Aveda products. The relaxation room you go into prior to your massage is a community type of room so there may be other people waiting as well and when others are done with their massage will walk through. The lighting, seating, and music in the relaxation room were very helpful in getting our minds ready to relax before our massages. The massages themselves were fabulous. Our therapists were so attentive to our needs and not chatty which is appreciate when really trying to relax. The spa itself is in the Hotel Julien which looks very upscale and antique as well. My wife and I have been here several times. We usually stay at the hotel Julien and visit the spa for our anniversary. One time we both got facials which was fantastic. The next day we went back for pedicures. Terrible experience. They never turned on or showed us how to turn on the massage part of the chairs. You could have heard a pin drop the entire time. We felt like we couldn't even have a conversation with each other. After the lady out the clear coat on my wife's toes she "touched" up some of the paint. On top of the clear coat. Last time we went my wife was supposed to have the body scrub with the heat blanket and I was supposed to have a regular massage. They mixed it up and had us backwards. When I brought it up as we were paying the receptionist was like oh oops. Then when I declined to leave a tip she got really snooty. This year we are going to try somewhere else. read more

What a modern and peaceful enclave in the basement of Hotel Julien in downtown Dubuque. I went there to get my hair styled while at a conference in the hotel. The staff were all friendly and welcoming. I was early for my appointment and they escorted me to the relaxation room. Wow. They have memory foam ergonomic lounge chairs that make you feel completely rested and supported. The chairs are slanted like pool chairs but with an extra bend in the legs so your back, legs, and rear are all perfectly supported. The chairs have a soft smooth texture that doesn't stick to your legs. I enjoyed my time in the relaxation room eating the granola they provided as much as my service. The services are a little pricey for Iowa but given it's a hotel salon I found them fair. I was pleased with the staff and would return if in the area again. read more

I have been traveling a lot and have ended up with a pinched nerve in my neck and severe pain in my shoulder. After 90 minutes with Chiquita's expertise, my pain is gone. She knows just how to find the trouble spots and how to work them out. I don't live in Dubuque, but if I did I would see Chiquita every month. She is an experienced and knowledgeable master in massage therapy!!! read more

Went in for a facial which was wonderful (and I've gone there previously for facials and massages) but this time the "relaxation room" where you rest between services was awful. How are you expected to relax when people are in there on their cellphones and notification sounds are going off? That made the whole spa experience go down considerably and it was pretty tacky. Unless they make a stricter policy about cell phones I recommend skipping this spa. read more

I did not care for the massage...masseuse was not very relaxing and didn't put me at ease. But I would seriously go back and try another person! The robes were sooo cozy. I cannot say enough good things about Potosa Spa. It is most definitely a WOW experience you will never forget. I have been to several spas in the tri state area and Potosa is by far the most relaxing, uplifting spa I have found and I'm just talking about the Spa itself and not any services yet. It is like getting "White Glove Service" at specialty stores or "valet parking" at a beautiful hotel. It's top of the line all of the way! My very first trip here was a "girl's spa day" for my daughter's and I. We were all in awe. First being greeted by a cheerful staff that were very educated about each treatment was a big plus. We then were taken to the lovely women's locker room (it's way more then a locker room though") where we all were shown to our own private locker that already had our very own plush signature robes nicely presented along with correct size slipper/footwear. There is a private room to the restroom and also an incredible tile shower with a fabulous shower head with 3 or 4 sprays. We were then greeted as we came out of the locker room, were given a glass of water with a lemon and was led into this "retreat" area like none other. We walked in and immediately could feel the stress and tension just melt away as there were about 9 soft leather foam filled lounge ergonomic chairs that you would picture in your mind being at a famous spa resort on vacation. There were some healthy snacks provided and the fireplace situated right where everyone could see and feel the warmth. Absolutely fantastic! Make sure you allow at least 20 minutes to take advantage of this relaxation room before and after your treatment. We all thoroughly enjoyed the personnel and treatments we received. Afterwards take time to enjoy the lovely tiled shower room and no need to remember any essentials as they have anything you need after showering....combs, specialty hair products, deodorant, q tips, blow dryer, curling iron and etc and all presented in a very meticulous cleanly manner. As you can tell none of us wanted to leave and all have become regulars and go frequently. You also can get a pass to use the hotel pool area as well. Now tell me where in the surrounding area you can pay $70-$90 for a massage with all of these extra benefits included? Forget the days of showing up somewhere, being led to a room, a place to hang your garments, get your massage, get dressed and back out the door. If you are looking for an uplifting, relaxing experience go to Potosa and make sure you plan it for a whole morning or afternoon! You will not be disappointed!!! read more
