DNI is a great, solid place to study tango in Buenos Aires. I started tango in BsAs back in 2007,…read moreand at this point, and especially as a follower, I find I get a lot more out of 1 private class than I do out of 10 group classes. So, I didn't take any group classes here, but I did 2 weeks of privates. They have a great system for this: you take a 1 hour private class, then the next two days your private classes are actually called "private practicas" and you keep practicing the concepts that came up in your class as it takes time and practice to be able to do them and examine the techniques from various angles and with various dancers. Then your fourth day would be a new private class, and you can bring up any theme you want to work on or continue/deepen what you were already working on. I LOVE that everyday is with a different instructor - I found it really helpful to work on the same topic with different people who have different ways of explaining the same thing. Obviously every instructor has a slightly different style, but DNI has them all teaching similar style overall. Every instructor was nice, clear and fun to learn from as well. For private classes you will be sharing rooms with others doing privates, but I remember once I wanted to work on dancing the milonga rhythm, and they said we could find a space where we could play that type of music if need be. It is also easy to arrange your schedule and classes by email before arriving. Again, this is a great, solid place for studying tango privately at reasonable prices. It's also nice to study at various schools and with various teachers throughout BsAs, but if you're looking for a home base, this is a great place. They also sell clothes, shoes, and have a snack bar.

The ambiance is very chill, colorful and quaint. Service wasn't too bad, although we were the only people there. I ordered the thali plate which came with ginger rice, sauteed mixed veggies, a beet salad, 2 fritters and some bread. I wasn't a fan of the beet salad, and the veggies smelled a bit spoiled. Everything else I happily munched down. Prices are decent considering anything exotic here has a high markup. I spent $400 ($20 USD as of Feb 2018) which included some tasty ginger lemonade. Altogether, a fine experience. I would return if in the mood for Indian food.

I ordered a tofu steak with veggies and a millet crocket. I usually like Krishna food and search it out as it is veggie and karma free, so i was very disappointed by every entry, the tofu steaks were so greasy they were swimming in some unidentifiable oil, the millet cockets had no flavor at all just some crunchy substance and the side dish of the daily veg was to salty and unidentifiable. left a tip thinking how we should be nice to people who need it the most and the older waiter gentleman definitely needed it. will not go there again.

At lunch, there were few folk there (and I gather, in an attempt to garner more business, they have…read morea 40% lunch discount if you reserve through Restorando and pay in cash). A table of four were there when we arrived, and a solo guy arrive a little later. It's sort of surprising, given how much foot traffic there is in the area, and that they offer a rather enticing sounding menú ejecutivo for a mere 350 pesos, that includes appetizer, a main course curry, rice, naan, and a beverage. We decided to order off the extensive a la carte menu which stretches an impressive seven pages, offering up more than four dozen different dishes, from a variety of Indian regional styles. While we perused, a little basket of simple naan, with a quartet of classic sauces - yogurt with garlic (excellent), sweet tomato (a little too sweet), mint and cilantro (very nice), and a truly fiery chili sauce (like, sweat inducing). They have a mixed appetizer plate, which for our trio (originally planned as seven folk, but four cancelled during the last hours before the lunch for various reasons), was more than sufficient. A mix of vegetable and chicken pakoras, a potato samosa, and a couple of "crispi onion" pancakes. Yum all around. Good start! 280 pesos. And, a trio of main courses - a kadai ghost - a classic lamb and black pepper curry, one of the house specialties, and it definitely had a kick from that pepper (460 pesos), another house specialty, the bangalore mix, a prawn and angel shark curry with a beautiful depth of flavor and the fish cooked just perfectly (475 pesos), and a classic dal bhukhara - slow cooked lentils (overnight according to the menu) that'is one of my favorites, and this one was one of the better of the dish I've had (415 pesos). All absolutely delicious, as was the cardamom spiced jeera rice, and garlic naan (could have used a little more garlic, but tasty). Friendly and efficient service. Nice ambiance. Great food. Leaps and bounds ahead of what it used to be downtown, and really, nearly as good as meals we've had at other Indian favorite spots in town. The menus at all three are, in reality, very different, with what (in my limited knowledge of Indian food) I assume to be regional variations. On the whole, Mumbai is less expensive (15-20%) than Tandoor and more expensive (10-15%) than Taj Majal, but I'd happily eat at any of the three, any day. Lunch for 3, with cubierto (35 pesos/person), and a trio of waters, rang up to 2080 pesos, but knock off that 40% discount, and then add in a tip on the original price, and we walked out for 1500 pesos - a bargain!

Sadly, the food was just okay. The menu was a NYE prix fix with appetizer, main, desert, and glass of champagne. Our assortment of small appetizers was lackluster and forgettable. For the mains we selected the chicken tikka masala and lamb vindaloo. It wasn't terrible, but I felt completely indifferent. I recognize that I'm spoiled because I live 3 blocks away from Ajanta in Berkeley, CA (USA), the best Indian restaurant outside of India, where even the rice is life changing. The food didn't have a hint of spiciness but it also lacked spices. If there's one thing Indian food is known for it's all the wonderful spices. Maybe because it was hectic on NYE or maybe somebody stole their spice rack, but this place did not impress. The desert was wonderful but we had to wait 40 minutes for it to come out.

We arrived without a reservation on a Tuesday night so it was relatively quite I guess. All six of these folk are clearly regulars, and garner effusive interactions with the two staff members in the dining room, one of whom spends most of the evening at a table by herself, eating. The waiter is reserved and a bit trepidatious talking to me, I'm not sure why. He is, at the least, concerned that I have a good meal, something he reiterates several times. I'm a little disappointed with the breadbasket - most Indian spots I've been to make an effort to keep it warm and fresh. These triangles of deflated chapati are room temperature and have clearly been sitting around awhile. The sauces are good, however - the tomato sauce not too sweet, the yogurt sauce with a nice hit of garlic, and the cilantro sauce with a kick of chili in it. I ask for, and get, a small dish of pure hot sauce, which, while delicious, is really fiery, almost more than I care for - clearly to be used sparingly. I spot Shik Kebab on the appetizer list and though it's not something I often order, I'm just in the mood. And, it turns out to be a good move. Delicious little ground lamb kebabs. I don't know it at the moment, but these are the highlight of the meal. (210 pesos) Almost at the same time, I get a plate of vegetable Samosas. Disappointing. The dough is very thick and is well overcooked, to the point that cutting into these would have been better accomplished using a nutcracker than a knife and fork. The filling is a thick paste of rather bland... something - the menu says they're filled with "mixed vegetables, onion, cilantro, whole cumin seeds, potato, peas, and chili". I was expecting those sort of diced up and maybe held together by a little bit of a paste of spices, but they've simply mashed it all together into an undefined, and not particularly well spiced mass. (175 pesos) My waiter absolutely insists, despite my attempts to get an assessment of some of my more favorite dishes listed on the menu, that I must, absolutely must, have their Tandoor Chicken. It's really not one of my favorites, but after three attempts to order something else and being told no, really, I absolutely must have this dish (perhaps it's the only main course they actually had available?), I relented and decided to give it a try, along with an order of paratha. The chicken was good, no question, it's just still not my favorite Indian dish. A whole leg thigh quarter smothered in mildly spicy tomato and onion sauce, on a tiny plate, served on a sideboard, making it a mess to cut and serve. The paratha, while well made, and even tasty, disappointing only in that paratha is traditionally made with whole wheat flour rather than white flour, something the waiter admitted to, but claimed, "there is no whole wheat flour in Argentina". What? Of course there is, you can buy it at the supermarket or any place else that sells flour. Maybe just not some particular kind that they're looking for, but it would be closer to the tradition, at the least. (Respectively, 350 and 80 pesos) I like the space. Service, or at least level of attention, would clearly improve if one was a regular. The food has its ups and downs - I haven't tried enough to assert that one should order certain dishes but not others, but I have the feeling that that's the case. (Though, if the waiter's assertion that the Tandoor Chicken is the best thing on the menu is correct, then maybe no....) If we hadn't had such a good meal at Mumbai recently, and with that, and Taj Mahal so close by to it, Vrindavan might rate more visits to try more. As it is, it was fine, just not as good as others.
