I was surfing the net for the top places to eat in Buenos Aires and this came up on the list. I was taken aback with the name as it is from a popular Indian movie. My roots being from India, we decided to check it out and we were surprised by how good it was! This place is a blend of Indian cuisine with the world. All of their vegetarian plates are like starters and you would need more than one per person. The staff is extremely friendly and courteous. Paratha served with curd accompanied by onions and mint: Paratha is an Indian flatbread which has so much of unsalted butter that it is almost pan fried in it. It is a very popular dish across India and being a sucker for Parathas, I decided to give it a shot. I have to say this is one of the best parathas I have had. Served crisp and the dough made with all purpose flour, wheat and fresh herbs, this is a must order. Sev served with Labneh, mint chutney and onions: This plate comes from Western India. It is gram flour which is deep fried resulting in a crispy savory snack. This is served with labneh. The labneh has really good consistency. When you mix the Sev in Labneh, it becomes slightly soft. The onions topped with "chaat masala(tangy-sour spice) along with the labneh-sev mixture make this plate a very flavorful experience. It is tangy and spicy but the Labneh reduces the effect of spice and makes it another must order. Pakoras de acelga, chutney de zanahoria, siracha y yogurt: Pakoras are fritters. They are generally vegetarian made form onions, potatoes, bananas or greens. Goat cheese and tapioca donut with flavored yogurt: Totally loved goat cheese and tapioca combination. Extremely surprised by the combination but they blend so well! This is served with a sweet warm yogurt. The yogurt is made of Saffron and topped with pickled onions. Saffron is an acquired taste. Thus not everyone might enjoy a creamy donut with saffron. Dabbang Blanco, rica rice, bananas con azucar mascabo: This dessert came as a strong recommendation from our server. I was apprehensive about the shits chocolate mousse and delighted from the be edgy first bite. It has some mascarpone and a sliced banana. I didn't enjoy the banana but the burnt sugar on the white chocolate mousse has a lovely essence and taste. Definitely a must order! read more

Okay, for the last couple of years, people have been carrying on about the amazing small plate Asian-influenced, particularly Indian-influenced, food at Gran Dabbang, Raúl Scalabrini Ortíz 1543, Palermo. The place even made it onto the list of Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants last year, coming in at #38. The chef-owner is the driving force behind the Masticar food festival here in BA. So you'd think I'd have been there, right? No. No I hadn't. I don't know why. It's another one of those... "I don't want to stand in line" things, and in general, 8pm, when they open, is the early end of when we like to dine. This week, I texted a friend and we decided to meet up there and see what the hype was all about.... You know the Thumper Rule, right? "If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all." Well yeah, Thumper's mom, but that's a double negative that actually means to say something.... I'm more... cartoonist Emily Flake version, "...say something clever but devastating". Fresh figs with Buffalo ricotta, cactus fruit with sunflower and sweet potato leaves. 210 pesos. Ummm... one and half under-ripe green figs, still crunchy, over a searingly acidic cactus fruit puree, maybe a tablespoon of some grainy ricotta, some red onions, some herbs, and some bug-eaten, browning leaves to wrap it all up in. Unpleasant is the nicest word I can come up with. Smoked pork neck lardo with cane syrup, some kind of water (the menu says "agua de" but doesn't specify of what), plums, anise cornbread. 260 pesos. Is that nice thick grilled thing the papada, the smoked pork jowl? No, the smoked pork jowl is that white wisp the size of a single rasher of bacon, peaking out from behind the burnt cornbread. A few bits of sliced plum and a handful of sliced almonds. I'm looking for the hidden cameras... this is a joke, right? Duck livers with spicy tomato sauce, fenugreek leaves, plantain and cashews. 320 pesos. Okay, flavor-wise, we kind of like this one. The duck livers play nicely off the griddle plantain segments, the cashews add a nice crunch, I don't know that I've ever tried fenugreek leaves before, they have a nice flavor, and the tomato sauce is actually spicy and tasty. But the duck livers are so overcooked they're dry and chalky. This one is a good idea, but misses the mark by about 2-3 minutes in the pan. Quail marinated in rica-rica (an Andean medicinal herb), endives with guava, umeboshi plums, and huacatay. 350 pesos. Basically a big pile of cold, endive leaves marinated in guava pulp, probably two whole endives on the plate, separated. The quail, once again overcooked (the leg/thing part was juicy, the breast was dry). The umeboshi gives a nice salty-sour hit when you get a little of it, more of that would be good. And while I like huacatay, the Amazon black mint that we use a bit in our Peruvian cooking, it doesn't pair well with anything else on the plate. We finish off the cold endive leaves - they might actually be, on their own, the best thing we ate. Service is friendly from our waitress, though she has a tendency to get sidetracked, and being the only one, at one point when she's been in a conversation with our neighboring table for over ten minutes while we wait to order (and not a conversation related to their dinner or the restaurant), I interrupt them and ask if it's possible we, and the rest of the restaurant, could have her back for a moment. The woman at the table looks around at the other tables waiting, and apologizes for the "kidnapping". Not your fault ma'am, it's the waitress' job to pay attention to the room, not yours. But, the actual serving of things is different. Wine is served as if it's bottled water - the bottle is shown to me, without comment, opened, and poured. No tasting, no checking, no nothing, and she walks away. And like the food, this ain't cheap. With the exception of I think one bottle of white down around 350 pesos, the rest of the wine list starts at 520 pesos and goes on up to around 1200. The food is served by the cooks, not by the waitress, and like any place that does that, it can be variable. The first two dishes are served with detailed descriptions of what they are. The second dishes are more or less tossed on the table with "livers" and "quail" before a different cook turns on his heel and walks away. Overall? The room is kind of basic at best - no frills pressed wood tables, uncomfortable chairs, little decor. Service, as noted. Food, I don't get it, and really expensive for really small portions - we were fine with the prices until we saw the size of the plates. I don't really see the "Asian-" or "Indian-" influence either - I mean, a couple of dots of umeboshi plum puree and some sweet potato leaves don't quite cover that. Sorry, but for me, this is the proverbial "the emperor has no clothes" moment. There's literally nothing about the experience that either of us liked. And with tip, it came in at 2000 pesos, and we left hungry and dissatisfied. read more

Gran Dabbang is the gran da bomb!!!!!!! I have no idea how this place has 4 stars. I love food (like seriously, I should be a big ball by how much I eat) and this is one of the most UNIQUE restaurants I have ever been do. Dubbed "Asian, Fusion, Indian" it's truly a blend of different spices and tastes. The place is small, but the vibe is strong. All the plates are small tapas, and they rotate out the menu ever two weeks. I came with a group of 5, and we had two bottles of wine, all twelve dishes (some twice lol) and both desserts. EVERY. SINGLE. PLATE. I WAS IN LOVEEEE. I'm definitely coming back. I'm bringing all my friends. And tbh, if there's only 5 restaurants you can go to for a weekend in Buenos Aires, this is it. read more

Three of us went for dinner while we were visiting Buenos Aires this month. We got to Gran Dabbang about 830pm and were seated right away. The space isn't big or overly fancy, but its nice and comfortable. The food is where Gran Dabbang really stands out! We ordered five dishes, including the swiss chard pakoras, plantain and lamb curry, and they were all delicious! We even ordered more pakoras they were so good. The staff were also great. Our waiter was very nice and extremely helpful. Definitely recommend Gran Dabbang if you want like contemporary Indian in Buenos Aires! read more

Want to dive into tapas of a mediterranean style with an asian twist? We did, too, and this hit the right spot for our group of 8. Sitting on a street frequented by several bus lines (a huge plus if you don't live in the area), this little restaurant counters all the busy distraction with a very tranquil feel upon walking in. Think natural wood dining furniture with frondy greenery accents, and Gran Dabangg movie art to add a little spice to your dinner conversation. Depending on seating taste and party size, there are several tables for two, two 3-seater cozy couches with their own coffee tables, and a larger table with two benches that can easily seat a party of 6, or 8 if two chairs are added at the ends. Ambience is casual to mildly intimate. We were greeted with one of the friendliest services, almost like we were dining at a friend's home. Our party of eight ordered a grand meal to share which consisted of 1 dish of spiced cashews, 1 bowl of olives, 2 baba ganoush dishes, 2 chicken dishes, 2 grilled ricotta dishes, 4 pakora dishes, 3 lentils dishes with bread, and mostly individual drinks of wine, beer, water, and soda. Price for this shared group dinner with drinks in early August 2014 was approximately $ 130 ARS per person plus tip. Every dish was savory, with various textures and flavors to brighten a foodie's evening. My husband and I found this place during our recent vacation to Buenos Aires. The restaurant is small and it's nearly impossible to tell if it's open from the street but it's absolutely a can't miss. The portions are tapas sized so we ended up ordering four dishes plus a dessert and it was perfect for the pair of us. Don't miss the burrata with eggplant and savory pancake or the pork bun! I should also note that my husband and I are limited spanish speakers, and all of the staff at Gran Dabbang went out of their way to explain each menu item to us in English. Plus, our waiter ran a block and a half to catch up with us after we left just to bring me the scarf I had accidentally left behind. Everyone should try this place!! arrived 8:30, our group was 5 people. they had a 5 person table open. they refused to sit us until all 5 were here. after 10 min, a couple arrives and they sit them in that table right away. our last party members arrives 2 minutes later. now there's no more tables and we're told it's a 15 min wait. next two more people arrive and sit on the couple's table. when we ask, we're told they're special customers. but not to worry, a 5 people split table that was used by only two people was about to be open in 15 min. guess what, in 5 minutes, 3 people arrive and they sit them on that table. this place is a joke read more
