For the past few years, an accountant prepared our taxes. We decided to check if there was a cheaper option than $640. My husband listed all the stuff we have. H&R Black quoted us $400 over the phone. We printed everything and brought the package into the office. After the review, the cost would be almost $900. We were told we would need to pay both fed and state (about -$3500 total). So we went back to the accountant who charged us $450. We are getting a refund from the feds and owe a little to the state (about +$1200). That's a whopping $4700 difference! read more

Pricing scammers. When we signed up online, the cost of the H&R Block "guarantee" bundle was $55. Our tax preparer told me on the phone that we would be charged $65, so I asked to have the cost reduced to what we were shown online. Instead of reducing the cost to $55, H&R Block increased the cost to $70. The H&R Block computer-generated tax forms had multiple mistakes. The tax preparer could not answer our questions and had to ask around and make a call to find answers, which were wrong. We had to correct the forms by hand ourselves. The H&R Block stores are franchises. We were H&R Block clients for many years at a different franchise. We will never use H&R Block again, and you should be warned. If you sign up with an H&R Block franchise online, take screen shots of every page. Review your H&R Block tax forms very, very carefully, preferably with a tax professional. The H&R Block computer system does not allow their tax preparers to correct forms manually. Forms look like they've been corrected on the tax preparers' computer screens, but when the forms are printed digitally or on paper, the corrections are reversed by the system. Therefore, do not under any circumstances allow H&R Block to e-file your forms. Keep control of them yourselves. Best of all, don't take a chance. Go to a tax professional. read more

2018 review: 1040EZ is free for federal this year. We only paid $56 for our taxes on state. It took us 30 minutes to get taxes done. Super easy. If you leave them a review on any of your social media accounts you get a card to Domino's for a free pizza too. I can't enjoy that perk cause of my celiac but the appointment was great. Surprised that there is only one review for this place and its negative. My husband and I always go here and we've only had one issue, but it wasn't bad enough for us to stop going. The lady who did our taxes one year put an incorrect routing number and our refund got lost into the interwebs. :/ We didn't double check and if we had and caught the error we could have avoided the hold up. We did eventually get it and we still go to them to do our returns. We always get a great refund and usually get it pretty quickly. read more

Not recommended. Cost to file basic taxes for a sole proprietor from my over-priced CPA was $340 in 2017. Cost with no change for H&R was more than $500. Remember that H&R and Turbo Tax LOBBY THE GOVERNMENT to keep free tax filing and automatic tax assessments from being available to the average tax filer. I will never return. read more

Ended up at H&R Block in Arroyo Grande, because my regular tax person was involved in a big accident and was unable to work tax season. My taxes are very simple, but it's my business so I don't attempt them myself. I called and made an appointment and they got me in promptly. I sat down with an agent there with my previous years return and about 8 extra pieces of paper. This was all that I needed to complete my taxes. I worked with the agent for literally an hour and five minutes and we were done! The first surprise came when this hour of their time cost me $550! I was dumbfounded! My previous tax person charged me $160. But at this time I didn't have much of a choice and they made me feel comfortable that everything was in good order so I went ahead and completed the return with them. Now I'll take some of the responsibility for not asking about the cost and assuming that it wouldn't be 3 times as expensive as I had paid in the past. But that isn't where my trouble ends... About 3 week after filing my taxes and paying what was owed I received a letter from the IRS stating I owed an additional $2,000. Not exactly what I was wanting to hear at this point in the year. I decided I better start looking into it myself, it took me all of about 10 minutes to find the error that H&R Block had made, they input my last years taxes as prepayments for this year, so it showed that I'd paid more than I actually had. By the time all his had transpired I was able to get in with a CPA in town that I'd been wanting to work with, so I took him everything I had found and he looked at it all for me. I confirmed the mistake in the estimated payments and then also found me a substantial deduction that absolutely should have been used by the H&R Block agent, it was Tax Prep 101 type stuff that anybody should have known about. Fortunately, this offset what was owed almost entirely. So I took my new found knowledge back into H&R Block and the manager there sat down with me and created my amendment. All the while in the back of my mind I was thinking about the "peace of mind" guarantee that I'd purchased when I did my return the first time. Well once the manager was finished and she was saying goodbye I brought up the guarantee which was clearly applicable in this case as the original agent had made a mistake and clearly looked over a very valuable and obvious deduction. So after reading her and pointed out the exact clause that stated I would receive my money back for filing the return, she agreed that she would process the application to get me a refund. In the mean time I had to pay the $2k to the IRS and wait to get a refund check from them as well as H&R Block. Now as if this wasn't bad enough, I have been calling and leaving messaged for 3 weeks checking on the status of my refund check from H&R Block, the money they owe me for my "peace of mind" guarantee. After 3 messages were left, I finally called again and got the same manager on the phone and she said she would look into it. Mind you, she didn't take any action for my 3 messages, only once I called and got her on the line. Well that was 2 weeks ago now and I have called and left 2 more messages to check on the status. I just called for my 3rd time and the phone just rings and rings and there is no answer service anymore. Listen.... I know people make mistakes and stuff happens. But this was out of control and clearly people being lazy and dropping the ball and every opportunity! All while I paid a premium for the service! I'm still here and expecting my "peace of mind" guarantee check, I'll be in touch again, don't you worry! read more

Would barely listen to why I was there in the first place and acted put off that I would even step in the door. Truly shocked at the level of unprofessionalism. I would give this business less stars than one if I could. Absolutely AWFUL customer service from the supposed "manager" Vicky. Filed my taxes in March and still have not received my refund. My husband and I each called today to try and figure out where our return is and were met with nothing but rudeness and disrespect by Vicky, who happened to hang up on both of us. Do yourself a favor and choose a private individual do to your taxes- they charge WAY too much here for the service you get. We were charged over $500 to get our taxes done and it is ridiculous for the service we have received. Will absolutely never be returning. read more

Though dealing with two offices at opposite ends of the county, Billy made arraignments that made my A.G. office the only place I needed to travel. My schedule K1 was completed and handed back over to Vicki to complete. Vicki has knowledge and the support to get the job done. DONT GO HERE, do it online. They were going to take 60% of my refund and then when I scheduled an appointment with my tax helper she didn't even write it down in their system. Not great work didn't get me a "bigger refund" just do online yourself. Or another tax office that won't take all of your money. read more

A mistake was made with our son's tax return. Now, we are unable to file our own taxes and the receptionist and tax person have been very rude and unprofessional in response to handling the issue. Our own accountant is willing to help us correct the problem, but H & R block is not cooperating. We were told by the tax person, "Oh well, basically whoever files first wins! You could just forget about it because next year it won't be an issue." Seriously, that's your best advice in handling your mistake? Won't recommend them at all. read more
