I've had John doing my taxes for the last 8 years or so and have not once regretted it. I'm a retired USAF officer and have a couple rental properties; the depreciation tables/forms for the properties are too complicated for me but a routine process for him. And he takes care of all four levels of taxes I have to pay in Ohio: federal, state, school district, and RITA. Every month I update my income & expense data on an Excel spreadsheet I put together myself, based upon questions John asked me the first year. Then when my 1099R comes available online from the USAF in December, I download it and email it to John along with the Excel spreadsheet. I think I'm the first to get him my tax data each year and am always glad when that time comes around. I used to dread doing my taxes because of all frustrating hours and days I knew it would take. Now I just send the info off to John Hicks and wait for him to call to tell me to come sign so he can e-file. I tell all my friends and family about him, local and even out of state! My son is in WA state and John was happy to do his taxes, even though my son waited until the last minute to submit his tax data. John also sat down with an elderly widow friend of ours to discuss possible tax concerns without charging her anything. Now she & her daughter will be having John do their taxes this year because they were so impressed with John's knowledge and his kind, patient demeanor. His fees are VERY reasonable, too, probably less than most any other tax service, even those with much, much less experience & expertise. I have no reluctance whatsoever in recommending Hick & Co Tax Service because I know they will not disappoint!

He met with me back on February 6th, 2017 to sit down and discuss my tax return for 2016. I emailed him all the forms ahead of our meeting. I was told that the turnaround time would be 10 days. It is now June 29th and my taxes are still not done. I filed an extension on my tax return because I came across serious errors to my returns that Tom prepared. I went through 3 rounds of edits to my tax returns with Tom, and there are still errors today that a different CPA has caught and fixed. The errors include: -Not listing my HSA contribution of over $2,000 -Omitting NOL for 2016 that I can carry forward 20 years (NOL carried forward must be accounted for on each year's return. You cannot lapse a year) -Claiming an earned income credit (I am not qualified to claim this, Tom would have paid a $500 preparer's penalty fee had the IRS caught this glaring error) -Not listing dividend income in 2016 -Not listing capital losses for 2016 -Providing advice that NOL funds can be used to offset self-employment tax (this is fundamentally untrue) The return also misspelled my home address, as well as Tom's last name. Not a good sign. I asked Tom 3 times to fix my returns before April 18th (tax day this year) and he missed every deadline, forcing me to file the extension myself at the last minute. After I filed the extension, I gave Tom one more chance to meet with me in May and rectify the returns. Instead of showing up to the appointment, Tom cancelled it and refused to return my calls to reschedule. He had physical copies of all my records, and did not comply with my request that the documents be returned to me until I contacted the IRS and got them involved. I would not wish this experience on anyone who is looking for timely and professional tax preparation help. Please do your homework and seek advice elsewhere.
