I don't understand how the woman who helped me has a job there. Won't say names since she is prob close to retirement anyway, hopefully. Made an appt online with one person , got seen by another with no explanation. We sat down and she just stared at me so I was like, uhh should I talk about the problem I'm having? I had to lead the whole thing, she slowly, over explained things I didn't need to know with no resolutions, like how she can't pull up my info. So I'm like, "ok, so what do we do?" Full disclosure, I do work in this office, but I have worked at several H&R Blocks in San Diego and this one is by far the best. This office has a high number of advanced preparers, and they are really good at matching you with a preparer that has the knowledge to meet your tax needs. The office really works as a team to make sure each client is satisfied with their experience, no matter what tax pro you are working with. The whole office is focused on quality over quantity, making sure that clients return to this office year after year. Wow! So for the past two years I have come here to do my taxes, before that I used an online tax service but I never was certain I was doing it right. So last year I went to H&R Block and had my past taxes reviewed for accuracy for NO EXTRA COST, I'm not sure if they have this special offer still but they will still review it for you. This year with all of my deductions (donations, volunteer mileage, medical expenses, medical mileage, school expenses, student loan interest, etc.) I have trusted H&R Block to file my taxes for me. They even provide audit protection!!! It was really simple to file. I made an appointment with Marcella and she helped me file everything. I wasn't sure if I should file as 'married filing jointly' or 'married filing separately' so she ran the numbers BOTH ways to make sure we maximized on our returns. I didn't have to pay extra to have the numbers ran both ways and only had to pay for whichever option I chose! She was very knowledgeable, professional and friendly. I appreciate getting good customer service when I'm a paying customer. I highly recommend going to Marcella when visiting. I'm sure other people at this location are just as knowledgeable as her but she is the only one I've been too and can confirm she will work hard to get you the best return possible. read more

I just wanted to comment on this location's amazing staff member Mary Aeck. My husband and I had been going to this location for the past few years, always seen by Mary. Each time has been a pleasure. She was always nice and always shared a laugh with us to make the pain of taxes go by easier and never left without booking an appointment with her for the next year. We ended up moving out of state towards the end of 2013 (CA to AK), so this year we had to go to a different H&R Block location/agent. NIGHTMARE!!! We had to schedule 2 different appointments, both totaling over 2.5 hours (due to the inexperience of the office), before I was so frustrated and contacted Mary. Mary said she would come in on her day off to call the office and help them figure out what was going on. I was so moved (as well as overwhelmed with previous frustration with the other office) that I teared up a bit. Mary called me back later the next day as soon as she had got off the phone with the AK office and assured me that everything was now set and good to go. I still can't express my thanks enough to Mary. It's going to be hard to find someone as nice and caring as Mary. Every tax year that passes, my husband and I will always walk out and say "I miss Mary", I guarantee it! In closing, I suggest if you're in the Santee or San Diego area, take advantage of it, set up an appointment, and get your taxes done by Mary. Tell her those Crazy Alaskan kids sent you... Horrible service Marjorie freaked out after I told her I would go and comepair prices with other tax preparation service companies preceded to tell me about her income consist of solely commission ripped up my w2's cleaned her desk and told me she has other clients she can help out!!! Complete meltdown on her part.contacted corporate and they offered me a huge discount next year $50 gift card for next years taxes at any h&r....contacted local news about it they are working on a couple same cases of discrimination and high pressure sales tactics. Hopefully will air soon I'll keep you updated good thing a got the whole thing recorded. And did my taxes down the street cheaper with higher return. read more

Horrible and scheduling ! Came on February 25 and waited 35 min past our appt time to be seen. Then we scheduled a follow up the next weekend for 1230. Was told at 1 she is running late and they would call after we left the paperwork. Was told to come back. Arrived at 420 and we are still waiting. We have wasted our whole damn day because they can't get their scheduling and shit together. read more

Do they even train these people? I was there on time and they were 20 minutes late for my appointment with not one person in there! Finally I get into my appointment and and she looks where I work and comments negative on my job. Not starting off to a positive start. With all said and done she said I ended up owning money. She could not tell me why or even explain how that had happened. I got up and left and went to my old tax man. We have no idea what she did but I got a very healthy tax return. I could not be happier with the service I have received here!!! I have had my taxes done here for the past several years and have always made my appointments with Marcella. With hours available M-F from 9-9 or weekends from 9-5 making it easy to get in and taken care of fast. It has always been a pleasant Experience. I don't have much with my taxes and use to just go to the library and pick up the forms myself but after having a daughter I wanted to make sure I was correctly filling the forms out and thank god I did because Marcella has helped me through the years with adding my daughters school daycare cost and serveral other tax deductions that have helped me to get a correct and greater amount back! Thank you h&r block, is my w2 in yet can't wait to do my taxes!!! Quick tip I have only seen Marcella , I would recommend booking an appointment with her, nights and weekends. read more

This year I finally decided to give them a try due to the struggles I got last year. She was extremely friendly and explained everything to me step by step. My husband and I used your services for the first time yesterday and were thoroughly disappointed in our experience. We have been long term Turbo Tax users, and when we found out that we were to owe money this year, we decided to go see a specialist to see if we could have anything deducted to help with our costs, and for a better understanding of why we owed so much money. We visited your branch in Santee, CA at Mission Gorge and worked with Patricia Tax Specialist 2. Prior to the visit, I had done as suggested and uploaded all of our documents into the MyBlock application online in order to be the most prepared for our visit. Patricia sat us down and started to look over our files, and seemed a bit confused about why we had come in. She poo-pooed Turbo Tax like crazy in front of us as I am sure she had been instructed to do, then continued to plunk in our W2s to her computer at a snail's pace. I informed her that I had uploaded all of our information already into the system and she looked at me and said she wasn't sure how to access that information "because..." gesturing to her computer and how she was not savvy at using it. I was frustrated, we were already 20 minutes into this meeting and our information had not been entered. After she finally entered all of the information, she told us the exact same response TurboTax had told us in 15 minutes! We proceeded to show her other documents that we could potentially deduct, and she told us no for various reasons. Finally I asked her about my student loans, and she pushed back a bit saying that it would not help much at all. She then asked if I had the document, to which I said, no because I had uploaded it online previously as I had been prompted to. She said, I don't know how to retrieve it then. Thankfully I had the information on my phone. She then took my phone and said that she couldn't see anything on it and didn't know how to work the phone. Once we got that situation cleared up, it turned out that my student loans lowered our amount owed by over $500. And she almost didn't want to add that into the system! Finally we get to the payment portion, where she instructed us we could pay with a card. Right before we paid the taxes with our card, we luckily noticed that there was a percentage that would have been charged to our card for doing so. A percentage that would have cost us another $104! Good thing we were paying attention to what was on the screen. She also did not make it clear to us that we could pay our taxes at a later date and take a voucher with us, and pay for the services with a credit card without a fee attached, so we decided to come back later with a check so that she could get our bank account information. We returned later, and were informed by a confused, but more helpful Kathy who got us all in order. One more note about your team member, she made comments about the amount of money we make for our age, and laughed when we were talking about how this tax season will use up our entire savings and greatly impact our way of life. When I said we would not be able to eat very much over the next couple of months, I was not making a joke. I am shocked that someone would make personal comments like those to their customers. I am in awe, and perplexed, that the trip to your business cost us $193 and two trips of gas, plus over an hour and a half of time to be told the exact same thing that a free service I can use online does. I am severely disappointed in your services as I left even more broke than I am now after taxes and frustrated beyond belief. I have begun sharing my story with friends, coworkers, and social media and I will continue to do so. Please let me know at your earliest convenience how you will fix this situation. read more

Went here today because they won't even give you a "ballpark quote" over the phone. So I went there in person and the first person "had never seen" the tax form sent to me. The 2nd employee said 2 returns would need to be filed. The 3rd person who was supposedly a manager said I would need to file new returns for all three years and that it would probably cost around $300. I thought that was a ridiculous price when I had only two 1099's, with one being a settlement spread over the past 3 years, and also I don't even itemize. So after having been told three different things by them I went home and had a 10 minute talk with a real IRS agent by telephone. He ran a worksheet in about 2 minutes and told me that I don't even need to file at all! So thank you H&R for being complete inept and/or trying to rip me off. We have used H&R Block for years. The service in the Santee office was exemplary! Our tax preparer was professional, courteous and knew her stuff!!! The interview was thorough and very pleasant. Just got back from this place after getting my taxes done by Carolyn. She charged me twice as much for filing than she was supposed to, which I didn't realize until I got home. Went down there and straightened it out, and they'll be sending me a check for what they owe me. I feel like she was pretending that she didn't know she over-charged. I feel like I could have gotten more back, and this woman definitely took advantage of the fact that I know nothing about taxes (and who does?). Not sure how much these people know about taxes, honestly. I was never asked about my business receipts, mileage, or small business...I'm not coming back to (any) H&R Block, it's not personalized. read more

Ive used H&R Block in the past for simple taxes, this year my taxes were a little more complicated as i was an independent contractor for the last 3-4 months of the year. I came in and asked how much it would be, i was told just over $200. So i made an appointment. When i came with my paper work, I feel like the rep was doubting me on my write off's. I told her i was not worried because I had a huge envelope with ALL my receipts and i had even brought them. Sill, it was not a good feeling. On top of owing close to $4,000 to IRS, my bill with H&R was $300, not the $200 i was quoted. Disappointed. I feel that if i pay $300 i better get advice and help on on maybe some additional things i could have written off. Not just punching in the # i had written down in the computer, I could have done that myself. I thought I would have gotten more help from H&R, again very disappointed. I will use and independent or "mom & pop" tax prep next year for my "complicated" taxes, no more of these places that want to get you in&out as fast as they can so they can get their commission on the next person. read more

Terrible ... they over charged my mom about 450 dollars! And then she did her taxes wrong and had to have them redone !!!

This is my third year going to H&R Block and I am never dissapointed. Marcella prepares my taxes and always does her best to get me the most back. This year I didn't come very prepared and she was so patient with me and helpful too. She also took the time to help me get an idea of what to expect next year and what I can do to potentially maximize that return when the time comes. Not only does she do an excellent job with my taxes, she always remembers who I am and what was going on with me from the previous year. The office staff is always happy and friendly too. read more

Came in on feb 10th. Sat down with Colleen McCoy. Right off the bat told us she couldn't do it we had to see someone else. She went and got another lady who came over to help her and was rude and seemed very bothered by helping. LONG story short... we got screwed royaly. Colleen put in all the wrong info for banking, after I told her it was wrong g.. was reassured it was right. We are getting both text say direct deposit went through and checks on the way..? We signed up for direct deposit. Thought we did anyway. The numbers for state return aren't even banking numbers at all, and federal she sent to someone else's account. We payed almost $400 for this crap service!!! I will never return and will spread the word like wild fire. We have yet to correct this as we can't get anyone that knows anything in the phone. All we get is "I don't know". I want my money back and I want this corrected. Never again hnr block. You guys SUCK!!! Zero stars. read more
