    the menu for the restaurant

One thing about my people we know how to cook! This is one of my favorite Haitian restaurants. It's clean and the food is always good. My go to meals: 1. Oktail with Black rice with a side of black bean soup 2. Griot 3. Legume with white rice and black bean soup Let's be honest everything on the menu is good. Caribbean food is always packed with flavor and always on point. I usually get my food to go but you can have a seat and eat your food at the restaurant.

    Griot with rice and beans

06/25/2020 . This place isn't too bad . I am just glad there is a Haitian Restaurant near me . We always get the Griot when we order to go and it is hit or miss . Today unfortunately it was a miss as the meat was dried up and there was more fat than meat, but the rice was very good . The service is always great and they are so polite .

Full portion of griot w/ rice n beans and salad

I ordered the large griot w/rice n beans. It is served with green plantains and a salad. This food was delicious I couldn't make it home to eat the plantains so they're missing from the photos. I asked for some fatty griot and it was so flavorful and the meaty portions were crisp on the outside but tender and moist inside. I wish I knew how to make the rice cause geesus it was good. The cashier Ashley was super nice and the restaurant is very clean and spacious. I will definitely be going back soon. 9/12 called in my order for a small griot that's on here/menu for $7.50 and a macaroni au gratin (mac n cheese). When I picked it up the young lady at the counter told me $16.04. I asked her why and showed her the price on the internet and she says oh no that's old and it's $11 for griot. Since I was on my break I couldn't really stay and have her correct the LARGE griot for $11 and she wasn't going to make her wrong into a right because she ran to the back as I was talking I guess to get the patrons food that were sitting at the tables. I tried calling a few times so I could let the manager/owner know what has just happened but the phone continued to have the busy signal. The griot was good as the first time but the rice was gummy and the beans were dried out. I'd go back but I will order from the counter and won't be in a rush next time so I can make sure ALL my food is fresh and I'm charged the correct amount.

    Large Tassot Turkey Platter

I was visually impressed via Instagram but my taste buds were not. My parents are Haitian so I'm pretty used to Haitian food so I had rather high expectations. As expected, there was no customer service. I said good evening in creole and I got a rather dry response so I'm diverted back to English. I got the Tassot Turkey Simp and Lemon Pepper Wings. The Tassot Turkey was nothing special to be honest and it I didn't really taste the seasoning. One thing Haitian food is know for is heavy seasonings so I was pretty shocked at the lack of flavor. There this thing called "epiz" and I think they need to use more of it. The plantation were good though, it's kind of hard to mess that up. The Lemon Pepper Wings were simply too salty. The wings were tossed in some dry rub but sitting in a pool of salted butter. All in all, it wasn't that bad. But try for yourselves.

Mid meal- not the prettiest. Goat & spinach!

Every time I head to sunrise I stop here. It's very clean inside. There is a great dining space. The music is mellow as well. As far as food. No disappointment so far. The food is a little heavy on the salt but I eat low sodium as always. I've ordered stew, and fried items and always yummy. Will definitely return and recommend as wel.

Griot lunch special: rice and peas

I stumbled upon this place while visiting the dmv in the same plaza; the food is excellent! Some of the best Haitian food I've ever tasted and I've been to many Haitian restaurants and many Haitian grand mother houses lol. The place is clean, the service is quick and the prices are great. I got 2 orders of the Griot lunch special. It comes with white rice or rice and peas, a fried plantain and a side of gravy and pikliz! So yummy!

    Nothing to look at

The first thing that greets you as you enter H & R Grill is a sign that says "Attention All Customers Take Out Meals Are Not To Be Eaten In The Dining Room". The signs are posted in several locations in the restaurant. The service, while polite, isn't anything to write home about. The diner-style breakfast is decent, but nothing special. They have--on a separate menu that they bring out when asked--a Haitian menu as well. They were out of fried chicken when we ordered it, but we were offered griot. I'm giving them an extra star for the Haitian menu, which deserves attention!

The biggest portion of chicken with sauce and rice and beans I've ever had. Even came with fried plantains. Only $10 for this large portion

Came back here again to try out the Caribbean side of their menu and WOW was I impressed! I am not a Caribbean food connoisseur by any means. This may have been one of the handful of times I've had it, BUT it was phenomenal. It was the definition of comfort food. I got chicken in sauce with rice and beans. It came with a huge plate of rice and beans (the kind that is mixed together, not the kind where it's rice with beans in sauce on top, but you could have that as an option as well) and my favorite fried plantains. The chicken in sauce is hard to describe, but it had a delicious spice to it. I was warned that it was spicy, but it wasn't at all to me. The chicken comes on the bone and I got 4 pieces. Granted, I did get the large because it was dinner time and they only offer large at that time, but for $10 you really can't beat the huge portions. My boyfriend got a burger again and it was huge and perfectly cooked as well. Can't wait to come here again!!!!

Looks good but needed spice. Gravy had no flavor.

This is the type of place that might be in your neighborhood for 20 years and you never know it's there. And the truth is you're better off not knowing. It's in a rundown empty shopping center and things only get worse when you go inside. The place is dirty and rundown. The food is bland and the two menus are confusing (why 2?). I had the biscuits and gravy which desperately needed spice, it had no flavor. The bacon was good. I might possibly go back for a "to go" but I wouldn't eat in again.

Probably the most disgusting "fried chicken" I think I have ever seen in my life. The meat itself is not bad but at no point does anybody buy fried chicken and want skin with texture like this. This is not fried chicken.

The grill tasted very fresh and flavorful. They also serve a gravy on the side which was surprisingly good -- and that's saying a lot because I'm usually not much of a gravy person. The pikliz was tasty; my only complaint is that I would have liked a little more of it, although that may have just been something I should have checked before leaving. The rice was excellent. It had a really nice flavor with a slightly peppery finish and honestly stood out as some of the better rice I've had at a Haitian restaurant. They also offer a house tea that goes along with the name Choublak (which the owner Marcus mentioned means hibiscus). The tea contains sorrel and is definitely worth trying if you visit. Another thing I appreciated was seeing a hands-on owner. Marcus is both the owner and the chef, and it shows in the attention to the food and the way he interacts with customers. Overall, if you're looking to try Haitian food, this is a great spot to check out. They have a small sit-down area and offer lunch specials Wednesday through Friday, which is a good opportunity to stop by and try the menu.

Going in, the interior was very clean and clearly gave off carribean vibes. The tables inside were jumping with other patrons, but we were seated rather quickly. For dinner, we ordered 1x griot dinner complete (meaning the platter; rice & peas, pikliz, plaintains), 1x lassot complete (fried turkey), and 2x pate codes (think of a loaded hatian empanada; we ordered 1x fish and 1x chicken). Moving on with our review; everything was excellent! The griot had a nice crispy exterior but was tenderly seasoned inside. The lassot was surprisingly moist and crispy too. To include, the contrast of the onions marinated with the green seasoning on top. The rice & peas were cooked perfectly as they were light as air and plantains were crispy & salted nicely too. The pate codes were huge in size and flavor as well! My preference would be the original over the fish, but they both packed a tangy, savory, and spicy punch! Moreover, we had the pleasure of meeting and being served by the owner, who was very friendly and attentive. Overall, we were highly satisfied with our experience and would definitely recommend this spot for anybody who's looking for quality hatian cusuine. Final verdict 5/5!

Going inside, the place was pretty quiet, and I was able to place my order quickly, however the wait was a little long than I anticipated. For dinner, I ordered 1x griot complete to go and a side of the macaroni au gratin. Moving on with my review, I was really appalled as the photos and reviews online seemed to be flowing with positivity, but when it came down to the main event it was not good. First off, THE WHOLE MEAL WAS $34. Now, I know costs have gone up across the board, but I've never paid more than $15 for a plate of griot VERY PRICEY. As for the food, the griot had a lot of bones and was dried out. The Dijon rice was cooked ok, but pretty lack luster in terms of flavor. The tostone and macaroni salad (probably the highlight of the meal) tasted alright, but came in very small quantities. HOWEVER, the worst of the meal tonight though SHOCKINGLY was the MACARONI AU GRATIN. I don't know how you mess this up, but the pasta sauce and cheese on top had a sour sauce that made my stomach queasy afterward.. Moreover, the staff didn't seem very warm, despite my attempts to make small conversation.
