Today, I finally decided to give it a try. As I saw someone leaving with a takeout bag, I asked if it was his first time eating there. He smiled and said, "No, I eat here all the time." Naturally, I asked what he recommended. Without hesitation, he said, "The oxtails are amazing, and on Wednesdays, you have to get the red pea soup." Say no more. I walked in fully committed to ordering the oxtails because, as a chef, I take Jamaican oxtails seriously. Unfortunately, a fresh batch was still about 30 minutes away. I was ready to wait, but the lady behind the counter suggested I try the curry goat instead. I'm glad I listened. The curry goat was outstanding--rich, flavorful, and unbelievably tender. Every bite was seasoned perfectly, with that slow-cooked depth you only get when it's made with patience and care. The rice and peas were fluffy, well-seasoned, and complemented the curry beautifully. The steamed cabbage with saltfish added another layer of authentic Caribbean flavor, and the sweet plantains were perfectly caramelized, providing just the right balance of sweetness to the meal. What impressed me just as much as the food was the customer service. Everyone was welcoming, friendly, and genuinely wanted to make sure I enjoyed my first visit. That kind of hospitality is becoming harder to find. As a chef, I appreciate restaurants that focus on doing simple things exceptionally well instead of trying to be flashy. There is a club called Lallos right next to them and while we were standing in line waiting, my friends needed to pee and as girls we were going to pop a squat behind the building but my other group of friends said they had used the restroom here and recommended us over there. Now keep in mind it was foam and paint night so the attire is completely different than this restaurant. Im a black woman im wearing a white t shirt and shorts, I had two other friends with me, one thats hispanic wearing black overalls with a white t shirt, and the other only has a bikini top with black shorts. Again I understand the owners point of view of why she didn't want us there but let's continue the interaction.... So when we walked in we went straight to the back of the restaurant and into the bathroom but when we walked in we felt the eyes and the whole energy shift in the restaurant. It's only a single use bathroom so all three of us as girls went inside together and as my friend was peeing, the owner unlocked the door and I thought it was someone trying to come in but when she forcefully shoved it more I peeked my head out to see what's going on. Immediately she's just screaming in my face "YALL NEED TO GET OUT MY BATHROOM LIKE RIGHT NOW, I DONT WANT YALL IN MY BATHROOM GET OUT". Moral of the story I felt like it was racially motivated cause my friends before weren't in the best attire either and were able to use the restroom with no issues, but as a black woman walking in with two white friends... we just felt violated completely and it left me shocked. I've stopped in plenty of times before, but these past two weeks I was deep in my Trini breakfast cravings, so I went twice and tried two different classics. And yes -- I always ask for their in-house hot pepper sauce. They make it fresh daily and it has a serious spicy kick (the kind Trinis appreciate). Even though I went for breakfast, everything in the hot food station looked so good that I couldn't leave without grabbing boneless curry chicken with paratha roti to take home for later. They also have a bone-in chicken option, because some of us Trinis need the bone for full flavor, okay lol but I got boneless. I desired Haitian food because in California it is almost non-existent. Plus, my dad's side of the family are haitians. So it's in my DNA, and let's go. We came shortly before they opened, and we placed our orders. I ordered the fried fish dinner, and it came with plantains, pikliz, rice, and a salad. My cousin ordered the pork dinner, and he chose the same sides that I did. The vibe inside was very chill and the speakers were jamming some amazing Haitian music. It took almost an hour, but it was made to order, and fresh. I did notice people picking up so next time I will place my order prior before I come.
