This new trail is a walking historical trail around the island, you will see so much and learn about Ford Islands historical past by walking this trail. The trail is mostly paved and all you have to do is follow the blue dots around which are placed every ten feet and makes navigating the trail easy. Every few hundred yards you will come across information boards that explain the area and discusses a bit about the history but military as well as Hawaiian. The designers really did a great job because the trail is well maintained and information boards are located around the island to assist with the history of the island which includes the crucial role Ford Island played for the military over the years and early sugarcane farming. The trail is great for families, kids, bikes, pets and if you stop and take in the great views and read all the history, you will be glad you did. Start early and bring a hat, sunglasses and of course water because it does get warm. Hope you all enjoy this new addition to Ford Island.

I love that there is no traffic or exhaust to breath in. Just you and the beauty and tranquility of a historical location. I always make it a point to stop at the USS ARIZONA marker to pray for those who gave their lives for our freedom. Even those of the enemies who lost their lives as well. During COVID my husband and I did the Marine Corp. Marathon here since it MCM was allowing virtual times to complete the race on the day of the race. So I got to check that off my bucket list of runs. But hopefully one day I will make it to DC to be a part of the MCM experience. What I would like to see on this trail are more benches to sit and relax at and a playground for children to play on, a volleyball playing area, and even Cornhoe and horseshoe pits near the Navy Lodge. A great place to bring your dogs as well. Three separate areas that are gated for different size dogs near the Navy Lodge. Navy Lodge does have a bathroom you may use. Please be respectful and ask to use it, then keep it clean as you leave. Enjoy!

There are fewer tourists on this side of the island so the beach was nearly empty. There were some people playing in the sand and others setting up for what looked to be a party, but that was it. I believe it is more crowded with locals on the weekend. Parking and bathrooms are available. The bathrooms are very dirty, but it is a public beach so we did not expect much. Picnic tables, playground, baseball field, and basketball courts are also here though we did not use them. People do swim and snorkel here, however, dangerous rocks and caves are located nearby so keep that in mind. The mermaid caves nearby are not a place for children. If you plan to visit the Mermaid caves, watch your footing as it is easy to fall. We enjoyed seeing them from the surface. Overall, we had a good visit to this park.

Toasted Buns... Not…read moreone of the glorious spot to grab a parking spot to veg out in the sun is this spot on Kalama Beach Park but with some patience it's absolutely worth the wait. Kailua beaches are just so beautiful and this one doesn't quite show it's glory until you walk the short path...tadaaaaahhhh! Yes there is a path which most are paved until you get to the bathroom/shower area then it's all sand and which I think is a great spot to just walk and take in the view. Wide open beach with views as long as your eyes can see it's all beautiful and something that you just need to experience for yourself, I wasn't dressed properly as this was just a random visit though since I was in the area I just though to give it a try and am so glad I did, very quite and peaceful place to relax and enjoy what we here in Hawai'i are so blessed to have. He found this park through our GPS and decided to check it out. The first thing that really caught my attention is how much PARKING was available. If you drive in Oahu, you know parking is a never-ending struggle and this park had plenty of spots. The park is really large with enough space for camping, picnics, etc. The park does offer two beaches. One of them is more open to the ocean which is perfect for anyone looking to surf, and the other side is more protected, creating a nice little bay for small kids to play. Since we had our little one with us, we stayed on the more tamed side and had a blast. Also you get an amazing view of the famous Chinaman's Hat from this park. Highly recommend exploring this regional park on your next trip to Oahu!

I came around 5:30 pm and sunset is about 6:40-6:55 PM), and the view was unreal, mountains in the background, waves crashing right in front of you, and the sun setting straight ahead. I brought a plate lunch and just sat there listening to the water... super peaceful and exactly what I needed on my day off. Definitely a spot I'd recommend if you're looking for something low-key, relaxing, and easy to access without a long walk.

My son and I enjoyed just watching the sunset and listening to the waves. The leeward side of the island has the best beaches to us. All this said, remember this is an historic beach. As you look around you can't help but wonder about the people that once walked there and the village that once occupied that area. Be respectful of the remains of the village...which are simply stones to some, but they are a piece of history. Here is a copy and paste from the Hawaiian Historic website: Ancient Hawaiian settlements used to be located along all Hawaiian shorelines, but what makes this one special is that it has been preserved. Not many such ancient ruins remain on Oahu's shoreline. A plaque at this site says: Historic Site 50-80-07-5763 Ulehawa, Lualualei, Waianae Moku Beneath your feet are the remains of traditional Hawaiian settlement dating to A.D. 1500 to 1800. This site has been preserved by the City and County of Honolulu for future research and educational purposes. Few such coastal sites survive along this part of the Waianae shoreline, so please kokua and do not disturb this cultural resource.

Well, to end this dumpster fire of year that is (was) 2020, I figured I'd write an update of a…read moreplace that always brings me happy thoughts. And it's not just reminiscing of good ol' days but very recent memories and what I'm sure will be good visits to this place in the future. I've been coming here since I was a kid, fishing, diving, surfing and in the last 15 years or so, photographing its beauty. The area is just so diverse for activity. Just across the way is Makai Pier (currently closed) and the waters between Kaupo park and the pier has some nice areas to fish and dive and you can also get some waves too, I'm actually not exactly sure if this spot has an official name but I've always known it as either baby Makapu'u or cockroach bay. The other surf spot that's to the right of the point is called Suicides. Named that because the waves break in front of the sharp, rocky coastline. As for the photography here, not much more to say than it's a beautiful coastline and pretty much epitomizes the beauty of Hawaii, the coastline with both sandy and rocky shores, the clear pacific waters with waves crashing onto shore, and the sheer uprising mountain face of the Ko'olau mountain range...amazing. This has long been and is still my favorite place to shoot sunrise shots on the island. Cheers everyone to a better 2021!

We need Honolulu C&C to get their act together and fix the bathrooms. This beautiful place needs to have working restrooms for beach goers and campers. I don't mind the homeless people camped out there. It's the facilities that needs to be improved. I don't know how long they plan to keep it closed but it will make the next experience so much better if they were open and working.

ʻAiea Loop Trail is a birder's dream and my current favorite trail on Oʻahu. I don't know how much…read morethe Yelp community intersects with the birding community, but I was drawn to ʻAiea Loop Trail because of the eBird app. I heard both the ʻApapane and the Oʻahu ʻAmakihi on my first trek here, but I did not get to photograph them properly for ID purposes (let alone for aesthetic photography). It was on my second trek on the trail that I was able to get up high enough to video record both the ʻApapane and the Oʻahu ʻAmakihi. It was a magical moment, cut short because I started my hike too late. It was also on this second trek that I also heard what I believe to be the Oʻahu ʻElepaio. I have yet to see it or photograph them, but I believe in the rare bird rule of second attempts: I hear these birds before I see them, and I see them before I can photograph them (naturally). I have to return as soon as I can. If you aren't a birder (yet), there is still a lot to be gained from hiking this trail. The views of valleys full of greenery are simply gorgeous. Perhaps a given because Hawaii, but rainbows appear everywhere here. The trail is better maintained comparatively, and the loop isn't too long, although I accidentally started the loop too late and did not know how long it actually was until I completed it. I was so scared I was going to get stuck on the trail after nightfall, but thankfully I got out before dusk. Mosquitos are still a nuisance here, so be prepared.

I've hiked this trail a few times and have seen downed trees before however nothing like our recent…read morehike. After two heavy rain storms that caused flooding in the Islands some areas of the hike had whole hill sides that had numerous trees down. The trail is only passable because of the hard work of the parks crew. In normally shaded areas there is more because of this. It's really a sight to see the terrifying yet amazing strength of nature. The hike is about 5.5 miles long, not very hard with beautiful views.
