Toasted Buns... Not one of the glorious spot to grab a parking spot to veg out in the sun is this spot on Kalama Beach Park but with some patience it's absolutely worth the wait. Kailua beaches are just so beautiful and this one doesn't quite show it's glory until you walk the short path...tadaaaaahhhh! Yes there is a path which most are paved until you get to the bathroom/shower area then it's all sand and which I think is a great spot to just walk and take in the view. Wide open beach with views as long as your eyes can see it's all beautiful and something that you just need to experience for yourself, I wasn't dressed properly as this was just a random visit though since I was in the area I just though to give it a try and am so glad I did, very quite and peaceful place to relax and enjoy what we here in Hawai'i are so blessed to have. Hey Yelpers! Summer is almost here! A review of Kalama Beach Park located in Kailua. This is my first trip here and I was pleasantly pleased! A great beach for all ages and for families! Parking can be quite limited and I noticed a few cars waiting for parking. I would recommend going early as I got lucky with parking. The beach is very sandy, no rocks or anything. The ocean was pretty calm, not sure if it ever gets rough here. Perfect for kids as well. The views are amazing! There's a bathroom and outdoor shower on the path to and from the beach, which is pretty clean. Overall, I definitely would go again and I recommend you guys to check it out as well! 3-3-2021 Kailua has pretty beaches and this is one of them. We found it completely by accident and it made our day. Why? You know how people say things happen for a reason? We tried to go to 3 places: P, a Chinese restaurant in Kaneohe, C a popular eatery in Kailua but they were take out only. How times have changed! Hubs refuses to eat in the car during the pandemic. Eons ago he loved to pick up dinner plates and go to outdoor drive ins and eat in the car. Those days are long gone. What to do? We were at the stop light at the intersection by Fat Boys and Formaggio, and Just by chance I spotted the words India Cafe and the illuminated red OPEN sign. Left turn into that parking lot with determination and a smile. Alas, take out only again! You know the scenario, hungry tired kids start getting agitated? Yep, hubs gave in and said just get it and take it home to eat. He took off to the left in search of a restroom so I ordered. Yum! Chicken tikka, how I adore you and mango lassi. Can't forget the garlic naan too. You do everything at the blocked door entrance, not a step inside - order and pay. Just love the rare opportunity to eat this kind of food. Perfect timing, once hubs was back the food was soon ready to go. Every morsel of the chicken tikka was delightful. I ordered level one out of ten for heat just in case. I suggested eating at a park or beach. Hubs said you're the driver. Somehow the Yelp directions brought us almost back to this restaurant. Whaaat? Out of nowhere we saw two signs on the lamp post. Left to park and right to beach. Okay to the beach it is...we saw a young person with a towel walking towards us and then a guy with a surfboard walking toward the beach. Not trusting directions and winging it...Follow that surfboard... There is a small parking lot in the front of Kalama Beach. Luckily we found a stall as close as you can get. Must be fate Don't think we've ever been here before. Adventure! Even better, there is a men's and women's restroom before you head down the path to the sand and water. There are showers outside those facilities. Lo and behold the ironwood trees, naopaka bushes, glimpse of the most welcoming bright blue water was a stunning sight!!! Excited, had to stop and take several photos. Saw a large driftwood log wide and sturdy enough to hold our weight and lunches. Although it was in the sun I motioned my companion, come hither...The view was breathtaking. What a million dollar spot, better than any indoor dining for sure. I'm not letting his dark mood saying I don't have my sun glasses get to me... Glad we at least were wearing shorts or would stand out freakishly amid the string bikinis, tanned muscular bods of some scantily clad figures of youth walking & jogging along the water's edge. There were a few families, dogs being walked on leash and a few need to get with it folks dressed like us. The entire time the weather was beautiful. Not scorching hot as there was a strong breeze and the waves kept unfurling white foam. Just looking out I thought to myself you'd never know at that moment that Covid was still lurking around- those at the beach weren't wearing any masks, only before or after hitting the sand. It was picture perfect. For just a little while it seemed like all was well. Thank goodness the number of cases has started to plummet. Why not 5 stars? There was a sign Strong Current but I didn't see a lifeguard in sight although Very few people entered the water. What a glorious place to be in Hawaii. Discovering a beach as precious as this is everything! Sometimes Plan B is better than Plan A. Adds spice to life in more ways than one. read more

A day where I was stuck in Kailua is truly a wonderful day to embark digging a gem on the sand! Roaming around Kailua by myself is one of my "juanderlist" (goal). And I feel so proud and I feel so fulfilling within myself. I'm a bit tired so idling at WholeFoods is the best idea I can think of. While waiting for my husband to fetch me, I was checking google map, minding my own business then noticed the Kalama Beach Park that is 8mins. away from where I am. And sure enough we ended up in here! Almost an impeccable paradise for me. Unlike Kailua Beach which is usually crowded, this one is the opposite. Powdery white sand that is so clean & a wonderful stretch to just idle the day. Who would have thought that in this area lies a pristine beach? The moment you park your car in the parking lot you'll notice an old abandon house and it's clean grassy ground with a paved path that will help you lead to the beach area. Guess what? They also got restrooms and outdoor-shower in here! Perfect gateway! I guess only people who's willing to escape and look for a new places to dock are the only few who knows this area. Luckily, I'm one of them! Hihihi. Thank goodness for the time of boredom and idling, and I was able to find a gem that fine afternoon. Kalama beach is similar to Kailua beach only in that it is less crowded. The waters in this area are a brilliant turquoise color unlike anywhere else on the island. The beaches in Kailua are a must see for any visitor or new transplant to Hawaii. This area really does offer some of the best beaches in the country. Kalama is also a great starting point if you plan on a walk through Kalama, Kailua, and Lanikai beaches. We started out the day at the western end of Kalama and rested for a bit in a shady area before making the half an hour trek along the beautiful white sand to Kailua beach before our final stop in Lanikai. All three beaches are close to downtown Kailua by car or bus, where there are plenty of restaurant and shopping options. What I like about Kailua is that it still retains a small town feel with all the amenities of a city like Honolulu. read more

Very fine sand beach. Keep close watch the waves not the biggest and best but turbulent enough to keep your attention. For the most part waters have nice sandy bottom and make for a great place to learn body surfing/boarding. Surfing is possible as well but hydro-foil wind surfers take full advantage of the winds here. Be vary wary of the park closing hours especially the parking lot(s)...the one we recently were parked in chained up the exits at 6pm Sunday. read more

Hard to know where the boundaries are, it's one long stretch of beautiful white sandy beach. I think round trip end to end is 5 miles. I grew up in Kailua so coming here brings back many memories. When I was 13, I got stung by 3 tangled Portuguese man-o-war jellyfish at once, covering my entire lower body. Warning- this beach tends to get them badly in north winds. My cousin offered to pee on me but I refused. Meat tenderizer or vinegar works best FYI. The pain and heat of 3 combined man-o-war was so intense, I practically fainted. It took over 6 hours to feel better. Then 2 weeks later, I broke out in severe rash where the stingers had sunk into my skin like an evil alien. Ahhhh memories! Supposedly box jellyfish on the South and West side is worse or deadly. Today we parked on a side street (mauka) and walked down a public access right of way. So it wasn't the official park. I don't know if the park has a restroom but since Coronavirus shutdown it would be closed today anyhow. There are many people walking their dogs, mostly leashed. We didn't swim because there were no showers and didn't wanna mess up my new car. However I know there is nothing to see as far as snorkeling here because there is no reef. Lanikai has good snorkeling anywhere east of the boat ramp. read more

Kalama Beach! What happened? Ten years ago, when I wrote my first review, parking was a breeze, the restroom was clean and safe, and the beach was not crowded! What a difference a decade makes! Is it because it has become overrun with tourists, criminals are not being put in prison anymore, or because of the degradation of our island home in general? I don't have the answer to this, but I'm sure you can find a famous podcast or two that will explain it all. First off, forget about getting parked unless you show up at the crack of dawn or bribe someone $100 to park in a spot and then move when you arrive. Second, the restroom is disgusting. It has water all over the floor, or, actually I'm not sure it's water! It smells really bad in there, and of course, there's no soap to use when washing your hands, so you best better bring your own hand sanitizer! My daughter tells me the women's room is equally disgusting in terms of water on the floor, offensive smell and no soap. Also, a couple months ago we heard a girl was assaulted in the women's room, so I have to stand outside there with a baton whenever my daughter needs to go. Once you get to the beach, it is CROWDED! Last time we were there, there were some young military guys playing ball on the beach and their stupid football kept hitting people who were lying on their towels...so inconsiderate! I think they had the caveman mentality that goes like, "If I hit that pretty girl with a football, she'll think I'm so cool!" If you own one of the houses on this stretch of beach, you don't have to worry about the parking or the restroom; just some of the obnoxious people who frequent the beach. But the problem with buying a house here is that in the next decade all these homes will be underwater because of rising sea levels, and you need to fork over at least $5 million for one of these places! read more

A secluded, peaceful beach in Kailua, Oahu! After dinner, Roz and I were too full for dessert, but didn't want to go home yet, so I suggested a stroll on the beach since it was almost sunset and Kailua is known for its pristine beaches. We did a search on the Yelp app and found Kalama Beach which was a little over a mile from where we were. We both had never been there before, so we thought we'd be adventurous and go exploring! The first obstacle was a gate at the opening of the parking lot. Yes...there were cars locked in the lot. The caretaker was walking across the lawn with the key to rescue them. Roz and I backed out and found parking in the residential area. Next, we had to ask the caretaker for directions to the beach. The entrance to the paved path is not clearly visible and you wouldn't know that there was a beach past the grassy area, the outdoor shower, and enclosed restrooms. Once you pass these landmarks, you will come across what Hawaii is known for... a place where the sky meets the ocean and the ocean plays on the beach... the wind is cool and the water is almost warm... the sand is soft and clean...the water is clear with various hues of blue and teal ... wow... breathtaking... Roz and I enjoyed the golden rays of the setting sun, reflecting off the ocean's surface, and watched the moon's glow in the distance... we promised to return with some friends and a picnic dinner... would you like to join us? read more

One of my favorite spots in Kailua to take in a sunrise after a morning run. If you come early enough, you'll score one of the coveted parking spots in the parking lot. But if not, just park across Kalaheo Avenue on one of the sidestreets (please be mindful of the residents). There are bathrooms and showers - a definitely plus! Walk across the nicely-manicured grass towards water and you'll arrive at one of Oahu's most beautiful beaches. There's not much shade so bring an umbrella. read more

A wonderful beach. I will say that parking is extremely tough since the parking lot is so small. We lucked out though and got a spot when we got there and another spot after leaving to go get lunch. It wasn't too packed when we got there but as the day progressed, more and more people trickled in. Nothing compared to what you would see in Waikiki though. The beach is dog friendly too. Everyone is courteous of one another. Definitely a great place to have a beach day. read more

If you want to watch the sunrise in a semi secluded beach, then Kalama is one of the spots you should head to. There is a good amount of parking and with a short walk to the beach, you'll have a breath taking view of the ocean in front of you, Turtle island to the left and the mesmerizing sunrise to the right. There is endless beach to walk on and with minimum people interaction. Of if you're like me, pick a spot and sit in the soft clean sand. Take in the sounds of the waves crashing, the views of the water rolling into the shore and the salty smells of the ocean. The water is not very cold and perfect for dipping your toes in even at 7am in the morning. read more

More of a local spot, it was pretty crowded on a dreary days probably cause the waves were a bit nicer. But significantly less crowded than Kailua and Lanikai. Limited parking, Sad thing is I saw a lot more plastic debris on the shore of the beach. Maybe its from the recent bout of severe weather. Bathroom is out of order. There is still a shower. Fair amount of dogs we had ours. The surf was a bit rougher that day so the first wave to break on shore pushed her back a bit. Surf report oddly said 25-30 ft waves. Maybe it was far out. Kalama Beach is beautiful, no matter what time of year you decide to visit. Soft powdery sand, beautiful views no matter which way you turn. Great beach for boogie boarding and body surfing. The park offers parking, there's not a lot of spaces, but if you get there early you should be good. Walking through the park to the beach is a very short distance, approx 3 mins, you'll be entertainers by the chickens and roosters that call Kalama Beach Park their home. There is outside showers to rinse off the sand prior to returning to your vehicle, restrooms that are close to the beach and trash cans that are conveniently located through out the park. read more

A local spot and hidden gem. This beach is tucked away a bit with limited parking. However, the powder soft sands are great for building sand castles and the waves are perfect for kids learning to boogie board. Take a stroll on the beach and check for man of wars (jellyfish) before heading into the turquoise waters. My 6 year old and I got stung, but we treated the stings with vinegar and took a little break. And then we got back in the water. read more

SHARK SIGHTINGS One of my favorite beaches in Oahu. Came here to swim, tan, sit around and play in the water. The water here is really blue. When we came here, it was kinda dirty because tourists are really inconsiderate with nature. Other than that, sand is soft, and this beach is perfect for locals to hang out with their families and friends. When we were swimming, people were screaming and we were told to get off the beach. There were reef sharks close-by and someone had told us to stay out. After 30 minutes of just standing there, we left. My go to beach. Grew up coming here to check out guys! Hahaha Seriously, I would go here because friends lived in the area or my dad had an open house showing down the street. It gets crowded, but not as bad as Lanikai or Kailua Beaches. It's the same soft sand as Kailua and Lanikai, but a little bit rougher on the surf. If you aren't on the sand, there is ample room on the grassy areas. Also, there are shower and bathroom facilities. There is limited parking and they do close the parking lot for the night. You can park on the side streets, but be aware that you aren't parking too much on the road or blocking the walkway or driveway. There always seem to be lifeguard vehicles in the parking lot, but there isn't a lifeguard stand. I don't know where those guys hangout, but there are offices in the house. (I'm not checking out the lifeguards, I know too many! hahaha) So here's the nerdy part of my review, or architectural part. The house on the property was designed by Vladimir Ossipoff in 1937 for the Boettcher's. The house is a typical Ossipoff beach house design that maximizes views of the beach, encourages trade winds, but yet shelters the occupants. It's a great home and it was fortunate that Mrs. Boettcher willed her estate to the City to be used as a beach park. There was a time when they would rent out the house for parties and events. I'm not sure if they still do that, because it isn't listed on the City's website for use. So if you're out Kailua side, feeling like seeing where I hang out, check out this beach! read more

This is a great beach...for families too. PARKING: there is a small parking lot off Kalaheo Avenue in Kailua. If you're patient, you can usually get a space that opens up from someone leaving. Otherwise, you can park on side streets off Kalaheo Avenue. BONUS: there is a shower and Men/Women bathroom leading toward the beach entrance. The beach is wide and long, so there is a lot of space to set up. It is great for people learning about waves and the ocean. Some days/times, the waves are larger than others. The main thing - if you have small children - is to keep an eye on them at all times. It's great for body boarding, but I do see some people surfing or body surfing. There isn't a lot of tree coverage, so bring a tent if you want! Or lots of sunscreen. From Kalama Beach, you can look down toward Kailua Beach/Lanikai area in one direction, or toward the Marine base in the other direction. It is the PERFECT beach for 'taking longs walks on the beach' with a friend, by yourself or with your dog. It's absolutely gorgeous. WARNING: there are Portuguese Man-O-War from time to time, depending on weather/currents/etc. (little light blue/clear bubbles with long blue threads attached to the end). They sting badly so definitely don't step on them on the sand. If possible, pick up a bottle of JELLY FISH SQUISH (small orange spray bottle) from Walgreens or Longs CVS or Walmart to have on hand. WEATHER: like everywhere in Hawai'i, it comes and goes. It may rain, but it usually passes unless it is an unusually stormy day. When it's clear, it's great. I used to come here EVERY MORNING. Then I got a job... Hahahaha! I try and come here as often as possible because this beach is really beautiful. There is a small parking lot. There usually is parking up until about 9 am, then you have to look for parking across the street in the neighborhood. If you come later in the day, around 5 pm and plan on staying past 6 pm, then definitely park in the neighborhood. They close the parking lot at 6pm and good luck trying to get your car out. There is a nice lady who goes around asking people if they have parked in the lot that you need to move. I don't know of any other beach that has that kind of warning system! As you walk thru a small park to get to the beach, you can check out the little tribe of chickens. They hang out by the cars sometimes. They are pretty cool to watch. There is clean (at least on the women's side) restroom facilities and showers near the entrance to the path to the beach. The city & county take really good care of the park and the facilities. Thank you for that! The beach itself is a wonderful sight. If you go early, there are hardly any people. It's nice to have a morning walk. A nice breeze, turquoise water (it was today), and just the fact that you are on a beach in Hawaii - people on the mainland would trade with you in a second! If you go a little later, you will get the runners, dog walkers, and tourists, but still a great place to hang out. Another bonus? Go right into Kailua town straight to the Local for shave ice!!! Parking for this beach is street parking. Got to circle around a bit and lug your items from car to location and back again. Since it was the weekend, there were a lot of people there. Found a spot near the plants. From the grassy area to the shoreline there isn't much room. A lot of debris (like rock, wood, etc.) were scattered all over the place. The water looked wonderful and the waves weren't too bad either. A lot of dogs (on and off leashes) at this beach. So be careful if you step into something. No public bathrooms... lol or trashcans so please have garbage bags to dispose of your trash. read more

Kalama Beach is one of the "unsung" gems of Kailua--peaceful and pristine. The soft golden sand and turquoise water are picture perfect, and it's typically less crowded than nearby Kailua and Lanikai Beaches. Since it's located in protected Kailua Bay, the water is usually calm and great for swimming for the whole family. Occasionally there is enough wave action for beginner surfers and bodyboarders. Watch out for Portuguese-man-o-war in the water and on the sand when the trade winds are especially strong. There is a small parking lot (if it's full, you'll have to find nearby street parking) as well as restroom and shower facilities. A green area near the parking lot is suitable for picnics and has limited shade. No lifeguard. If you need a little peace and quiet with a big dash of gorgeous scenery thrown in for good measure, try Kalama Beach. read more

I had the opportunity to visit Kalama Beach a couple times during my two week stay in Kailua, Hawaii. Parking was a challenge on the weekend days but not so much during the week if you arrived by noon or at early afternoon. It was an easy walk from the parking area down to the beach with clear. As with the Kailau Beach Park, the beach was so CLEAN, from from debris such as shells or seaweed and reminded it reminded me of the Caribbean The sand was soft, like powdered sugar and as you walked into the water it, too was conducive to bare feet. There were trees which offered some shade. The ocean was incredibly blue, turquoise, green and serene with waves and white caps. Near the parking area there were what appeared to be homeless camps which is said. Although one hopes their vacations, including beaches, to be free of such "sightings", we as a nation have a huge homeless problem. Camps like I saw existed at nearly every beach I went to around the entire island. They did not deter my enjoyment of the beach and scenery nor did it create ant problems that I am aware of. It's sad. I cannot wait to return to Kailua to visit family and to see this beach again. read more

I love the views! This is a BEAUTIFUL location. Although trying to get there by bus ended up a disaster. Yes, I was too cheap to rent a car and enjoyed riding the bus around vs driving. So many sights and stops to take in sans following traffic, gas $ and it gave me a chance to chit chat with the locals. Had to call my fellow out of town guest to come and get me. GPS you are evil, evil EVIL! The small opening to the stunning turquoise water was breathtaking. This beach is always a nice one to go to in Kailua. The water is nice and the sand is soft. The only downside to this beach is that the parking is limited. Main reason why I hardly go there. Went here today and brought the pup. It wasn't crowded at all, Saturday, and we all had fun. Our dog is an old man and doesn't venture more than 2 feet away from us so we didn't have any issues with him being off leash. There is a shower off area by the parking lot as well as restrooms. Waves were nice, sand was powder-y, and not a bunch of rocks so it was easy to walk along the shore. read more

Perfect beach park for dogs! Private parking lot with just a short walk to the beach. There is a nice grassy area with plenty of trash cans. Decent shower area to get water or rinse off the dogs. There are lots of other dogs and families in this area of the beach and it's not too crowded. The waves are relatively small which makes it fun and safe for both dogs and children. Definitely a popular and crowded beach, but it's more hidden away from the main streets and parking lot. There is a grassy area leading up to the beach, which is nice. I've been to Oahu four times now (in the past 9 years) and it's never intentional to go there so much but it somehow happens. Most people stick to Waikiki since it is so tourist-y (ABC shops, restaurants, etc). I came to visit my brother-in-law and he took us to Kalama Beach which had more wind and waves. You could definitely tell that this was not catering to tourists as parking only had 20 spots and the beach itself was small. We were able to lay out and play in the waves with the locals as well as enjoy a good meal down the street at a local deli. Overall, not the cleanest beach since it's not touristy but it definitely had all the basic things you'd want to have and most importantly - no crowds! read more
