We went there during the rainy Memorial weekend, but I bet the cool mine feels even better during a hot summer day.

714/24 (Visit): Sterling Hill Mining Museum had been a working zinc mine up until '86…read more On the outside of the museum, there's several impressive statues of miners and of the brothers Richard and Robert Hauck who opened the museum. The tour is approx. 2 hours. Gerrard was our guide. He was extremely knowledgeable about the entire science behind the minerals. In the mine, you'll see a shaft and how it operates. -Just keep in mind, the mine gets slightly misty and the floor is wet. One large area was filled with different minerals. Gerrard spoke about how the minerals reflect different colors under fluorescent light. Zobel Exhibit Hall displayed beautiful colored minerals from all over the world and incredible fossils from NJ. The museum is probably best for children at least age 5 and up. I noticed some people with strollers having some minor difficulties maneuvering in the mine. Many thanks to the brothers Richard and Robert Hauck. They purchased the property at auction. The brothers opened the museum in 1990. In 1991, it was designated a National Historic Site and continues to house the most extensive collection of fluorescent minerals globally. Rutherfurd Hall is an amazing cultural center with an amazing historical story…read more This tutor-style house was designed by Whitney Warren, who later won the bid to design Grand Central Terminal. The landscape of the grounds were also designed by the Olmsted Brothers who became famous for designing/landscaping many of today's national parks. The Rutherfurd family lived here as early as the mid-eighteenth century, and over their families time here hosted many famous titans of industry and even future American presidents. There's a really fun/interesting story about FDR and Alice Morton. Later, Rutherfurd Hall was donated to the church and used as a type of retirement home for the nuns. Rutherfurd Hall is now owned by the Allamuchy School District who does a great job utilizing it to maintain this beautiful structure. If you go on a Wednesday, you'll be able to receive a tour through the beautiful home. Their tour guides are absolutely fantastic and know so much of the history so thoroughly it is really impressive. Rutherfurd Hall does weddings on it's own, but a local venue David's Country Inn also holds wedding ceremonies on the grounds. I'll be having my ceremony at Rutherfurd Hall and could not be more excited!

We're interested in the local history but are far from really being knowledgeable in the topic, but the tour hosts made the stories descriptive and accessible nonetheless. They sat us down in the first room and told us about the history of the house and we felt a connection even if we weren't experts. The rest of the house has artifacts of the era even if they might not be directly from the original house, also super interesting to see. They also tied the house in with the nearby Washington's Headquarters (which is also highly recommended to visit).

Despite the late…read morehour, Pat was nice enough to not only show us the house, but tell us about its owners, Dr. Jabez Campfield and Dr. John Cocrane, as well as its place in the history of Revolutionary America. She discussed Washington's battles and strategy, explaining how Morristown played a strategic role both in its location and natural resources. In addition to the wealth of information she offered, Pat was also funny and enlivened her discussion through her humor. My friend and I stopped by because we saw this listed on a map at the Morristown National Historical Park, and it made for a fun detour. A great place to visit on an afternoon!

This specific facility was mentioned during the cruise. So we drove over to this historical society. Asked park security booth if museum was open. The red headed female said yes, charged us $6 to park. We walked over to the museum. The woman inside the Museum said the place was closed. We told her the security person told us the museum was open and then proceeded to charge us six dollars to enter. As we are walking back to our car, we saw the same redheaded female walk over to another building. We told her the museum was closed. She said, "I didn't know". The historical society should give operating hours to the person at the security booth. Very poor customer service and Rip Off!!!

The building dates back to the 1800's and was once the home of the Morris Canal lock keeper. Each room in this two story building has a theme relating to Lake Hopatcong's rich history. Lenni Lenape artifacts dating as far back as 4,000 BC are on display including: arrowheads, stone tools and pottery. Lake Hopatcong was a vital part of the Morris Canal system (1825-1910) and a full room is devoted to it. During this time period ice was harvested from the lake and represented a major industry. From (1880's-1930), the lake became a summer resort for the rich and powerful of New York City. They built castles, summer homes and hotels on the shores of the lake and many celebrates came to visit. Babe Ruth, Betty Cooper (Miss America 1937), Teddy Roosevelt, Hudson Maxim and Thomas Edison were just some names that visited the lake. Entertainers like Abbott & Costello, Lotta Crabtree and Joe Cook (major vaudeville & NYC theater star of the 1920's) came to perform in the many hotels and entertainment centers that existed on the lake. Another important attraction on the lake was the Bertrand's Island Amusement Park (1920's-1983). It was the most recognized amusement park for it's time and featured a famous roller coaster. But with the right location and guidance, astronomy lovers have a great time stargazing in NJ. Located at the Buzz Aldrin Astronomical Center (named after the famous Montclair native and second person to ever set foot on the moon) in Voorhees State Park, NJAA Observatory is open every Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon from June 1 through October 31, where my partner and I went last night as first-timers. The facility features a 26-inch Cassegrain telescope, which is the largest in New Jersey, as well as two smaller ones and a binocular setup around the grounds. Upon entering, we were greeted by a number of knowledgeable volunteers @D.Ann S who explained the different buildings and their respective scopes and capabilities and all the benefits of joining NJAA, whose membership is roughly $40 for the year. They answered questions from the young children or the young at heart. We started out at their auditorium and split the group of 30 between viewing the moon with smaller telescopes outside or viewing the stars with the larger one upstairs. The images of the craters and seas of the moon were amazing. One of the staff pointed out the site of the first moon landing. Due to the clouds, it was not possible to view the larger one clearly. This is an amazing little environment for all ages that was well worth the stop, which we can recommend.

They have great patience and don't rush you when you're trying to star gaze. They explain everything you see and some of what you don't. I loved the gentleman who gave us their back story and all the tea on how they came to be THE place that houses THE largest telescope in the ENTIRE state of New Jersey. Star gazing is cool, dare I say, romantic, and so fun! I recommend it at least once. You'll be hooked!

The Museum is housed in the original school along with authentic desks, books, and photos of the children that attended class there. You can set in a desk from the early 1900's to watch the short film about the history of the Delaware Water Gap. The film depicts the town as it looked 100 years ago. It also had a photo of Fred Astaire, which was a local resident. It is hard to believe, looking at the way the town is now, but this area was the second largest resort town in the country in the 19th century. Of all the grand hotels that were once here, only two are standing. Among the artifacts at the museum are dishes, arrow heads, old photos, and many other old interesting things. There are also photos of the town when it was under water. The last time it was under water was in 2006. The Water Gap has been under water a few times during this century and each time the town does rebuild. When I was at the museum, a lady came in and introduced herself to the guide as a teacher that taught in this building years ago. She did not say how many years....but it was a long time ago. Wow...what a treat to actually meet a person who taught in this school house. The first floor is an art gallery. The art on display was from local artist and was priced very reasonable. This Museum is a must see if you are in the area of Delaware Water Gap.
