This is the quintessential guitar store, with wonderful employees and a huge selection of guitars at decent prices. I swung by here on a whim being from Arizona, and having a few minutes to burn before picking up a buddy from the nearby hospital. Fortunately he called and said he was ready to go just seconds before breaking out my wallet, so he saved my credit score. Just a word to the wise, be cautious and particular when you pick out an instrument. I know, that sounds like "duh, you should always do that," but it's easy to get excited about a new instrument and overlook some minor things like fit and finish when you find something that you otherwise find promising. Once you walk out the door with it, you will likely be stuck with any paint, finish and fit problems. So, inspect the instrument carefully before making any quick decisions, it can save you some disappointment. Dressing sharp frets or fret sprout are common issues that are easily fixed, but other blemishes or problems may be hard to get fixed or be expensive to have repaired. Most guitars now days will need setup and many may have minor cosmetic issues. Be sure to watch for them and weed them out. Don't get stuck with something you're not really happy with if you can prevent it in the first place. read more

This is admittedly the first time I have written a review about a business that I've never purchased anything from! I'm writing this review for two simple reasons, firstly because the young man I dealt with did everything right that a salesperson should do when dealing with a potential customer. I asked him several questions about the guitar I wanted to buy and he knew the product very well and there was "No, I'll have to get back to you" or he didn't try to bs his way through a canned answer. He was completely honest and just a regular down to earth kind of man, that's a rare commodity in today's business world, especially a "brick and mortar" musical instrument store. Secondly his price was more competitive than the large big box stores and he made no attempt to try and nickel and dime me as respects the shipping costs which were free or tell me I needed extra things which I really didn't need. Unfortunately for me circumstances didn't allow me to make the purchase in the end but it doesn't change the fact that this store's salesman and its policies are exactly what you would hope for when buying anything on-line and I don't work there or have any connection to the store or in South Dakota. If you've read any of my reviews you'll know I NEVER exaggerate about any store or my experiences with that vendor, period! So, if you're in the market for a musical instrument you'd do well to check this store's salesman out, you won't regret it! Pretty small, but serviceable bathroom. 5/10 bathroom. Literally one of the nicest guitar places ever. I'm currently an intern in Hot Springs so I was looking to get my guitar fix somewhere nearby and I ended up getting a new guitar, a new pedal, and an assortment of other small stuff. The collection they have is STAGGERING for the size of the building. Pretty much ALL of the Gibsons are Custom Shop models, which is no small feat. They have an entire acoustic room entirely dedicated to Taylor guitars, a separate room for plugging into amps. The first time I went, I was originally looking for a fuzz pedal that emulated a 60s fuzz and the guy helping me was so nice about helping me what I was looking for before I ended up going with a reverb pedal instead. The second time I went with my dad, the same guy was very helpful in helping us look for my new acoustic guitar, which ended up being a Martin (which is ironically my last name). And on top of that, they gave us a Martin hat, a capo, strings, and humidifiers on the house! If you or someone you know is a musician, I HIGHLY recommend this place! read more

I've been a long time customer of Haggerty's dating back to their Baken Park days. I told Scott Pack I'd write review of the sterling work he performed on two of my guitars recently. Fret sprout on both instruments was unacceptable and the nut on my lefty Composite Acoustic Bluegrass model apparently left the factory without a hint of radius work. It looked like a rectangular block peeking over the fret board. He corrected all issues well beyond my expectations and made both my electric and my acoustic guitars significantly easier to play. I called him the next day to compliment him on the superb job he'd done, and he related that it was nice to get some feedback as most guitars leave the shop and he never gets any follow up from their owners. Exceptional experience. I've been looking for a specific guitar for quite sometime and randomly came across Haggerty's website where the guitar was for sale. I gave Brian a call and we had a nice discussion. After a few minutes we traded some info and that guitar is on its way to me. I just received my new Gibson Les Paul Junior in tv yellow. I was told this guitar was a demo. The guitar is in perfect condition and does not looked played at all. Nice shop with nice guitars. But a sales guy followed me around the store bringing me different guitars to play, interrupting me while I was playing to show me something else. I just want to be left alone when guitar shopping...I'll come to you if I have questions or want a recommendation. I don't like interaction being forced upon me. I ended up leaving before I had seen what I was there to see because I just wanted to get away because I didn't want to come off as rude. Not an ideal shopping experience. To be fair to the store, I'd been asked by one other employee if I had questions and said no, and he politely left me to my devices. Still...if you're a sales guy you'd think you'd be able to read your customers better. read more

I moved to this area from a city where there were multiple, multiple choices of music stores. From mom & pop shops to National chains and everything in between. To be honest, finding myself living 50 miles from the only music store in the area, I had my doubts they could meet all my expectations. I visited a few times and was favorably impressed. Their stock seems to rotate well, so every couple months another visit presented new gear. I am purely a 12 string acoustic player who is picky and opinionated when it comes to my instruments. Over 50 years of playing 12's can do that to you. The staff here is helpful and understanding. A couple months ago I brought my first 12, purchased in a pawnshop 52+ years ago, into Scotty their luthier, (when I get it back there will be a separate review.) I mentioned to an associate that I was always on the lookout for an exemplary 12 string and it wouldn't be a Taylor. (I expected, since they are a Taylor dealer, to get some pushback. It's not that Taylor is a bad guitar, but they just don't suit me.) Instead, he said they occasionally get a Gibson J-45/12 in and he'd be happy to call me when they do. I've been on lists before and know how that usually goes, but the offer was made so I said "sure," Nothing to lose, though I wasn't banking on a callback. Surprise! A J-45/12 arrived and I received a call before they even took it out of the box! I was, unfortunately, on my way to Denver and wouldn't be able to get there for another couple days. Being used to how fast things move in the big city, I figured it would be gone before I got back. I didn't ask them to hold it, suppose I could have, but I wasn't going to buy it before having a chance to play it. It was still there when I finally arrived. Johnny, my sales guy was great. Not a single bit of hesitation when I asked for it to be tuned down. (Not the easiest change on a 12.) I also asked for it to be restrung, with my strings, that I brought with me. No problem at all. I was sold as soon as I heard it the way I expect it to sound. Though I must admit, its playability pretty much already had me. I now own an exemplary 12 string. Great service in sales! read more

Picked up an amp here a few months ago which went out about after purchasing it, barley lasted a couple weeks . I tried getting my money back or a replacement, and was told that there's a no return policy after a short amount of time after purchasing it . A .. yeah lol no hard feelings on it but I'll stick with guitar center. Way better service and always taken care of the customer , here definitely a different story. read more

I knew generally what guitar I was interested in, but couldn't make a final decision. I found that many vendors had the model I was interested in, but Haggerty's had a big selection so I called them for help and got Patrick on the phone. He was knowledgeable about the Taylor product line and had great answers to help me make a decision. He then sent me details on the specific guitars they had in stock. Shopping online from Florida, it seemed crazy to be ordering from South Dakota but any guitar I bought would be shipped from somewhere. My guitar arrived in a few days, and there was a minor issue so I called the shop. Ethan stepped in and took my info and came up with a Fast solution and called me back to discuss. Patrick also followed up with me after that. I have had issues in the past when there was a problem with a product that I bought online and couldn't get help or even an answer back from a vendor. In this case the vendor called me back immediately with a solution and even followed up. Rare! You can buy a guitar online from many vendors. Anyone can box up a product & send it out, but it's customer service that separates the best from the rest. read more

Give Haggerty's a chance again. While I've had some mediocre experiences with Haggerty's in the 20 years I've been a customer, I'll tell you that you should at least consider them for your guitar purchases. I recently bought a Taylor middle of the line guitar at a price that the internet could not beat! They seem to have dropped their Martin line so you can't compare across more than one premium line which is a bummer. This has not always been the case. I've seen sticker prices that are 30% higher than what I eventually paid elsewhere and high school employees that simply don't know what they're talking about. Bruce Neubert is very knowledgable in the "Taylor Room" and Scott Pack the luthier/guitar tech is just the best for hundreds of miles. Give them a call before you buy from Musician's Friend or Guitar Center - they might surprise you. read more

Previously, I had two crappy experiences at Haggarty's dealing with some real arrogant asses. They really made you feel that if you were not a bonafide rock star or ready to drop three grand on a Fender you were dirt. The place still is a bit uppity for my taste but was redeemed a bit by one salesman who took a lot of time helping me pick an effects box for my electric guitar. Haggertys is now matching online pricing and it's unfortunate that a small business has to compete with online retailers because some cheapskate doesn't want to pay sales tax that benefits their city. When your instrument needs repair or service do you really want to pay shipping costs to and from an online entity that doesn't want to give you the time of day other than to sell you another instrument? Do you want to purchase sight unseen and without trying your instrument first? I was once inside when a "customer" brought in a new electric guitar that needed an intonation. (Haggertys will do this free for one year when you purchase from them) When it was determined that said customer purchased from an online source he was quoted a 45.00$ charge. So in the end he lost $$ by buying online from an uncaring retailer. Bottom line is that they will take care of you right away should you need service. P.S. If you are doing a trade in and you have the time and resources, then you may want to sell your instrument to a private party for more $$. You can always put 20% down and finance your new instrument if you have to have it right away. Just sayin.. read more
