I had a great experience at Hair Spa Bar. Adam did my partial highlights. He took his time and did an excellent job. I definitely got more highlights than I expected for a partial. I did buy a Groupon, but the prices are reasonable, I would go back. The venue itself isn't impressive, but for me it's more important the service I receive. This was actually my second time there. I was there about two years ago. My only complaint is that both times the salon was extremely hot for my taste. So sitting under the dryer was rough. Originally I thought it was hot because it was summer, but this time it was a cool day in April. I recommend Adam, he didn't try to engage in meaningless conversation, which I appreciated because I had just finished a long day at work. I really love this place. It's like a hidden gem because it's on the second floor of the building. When you first walk in, the staff is extremely friendly and welcoming. I was expecting a long wait, but they made sure I was seated in their salon chair within minutes. They offered me water in a nice glass and made sure that I was comfortable. I showed them a picture of the highlighting expectations that I had and they assured me that they could do it exactly how I wanted. They were quick, efficient, and very friendly during the whole process. I opted to get highlights with an ombre style. They let me know that it would be very natural and it turned out great! I have highlights in my hair that are intensified more at the ends for a more natural, less-streaky look. I asked for caramel/blonde highlights and that's exactly what I got. I love how the ombre highlights aren't overpowering and are emphasized when I curl my hair. This hair color is going to be low maintenance, and I can definitely grow it out. The gloss and product that they used smelled great and lasted even when I washed my hair out a few times. During the washing process, they provided a great head massage and I was really appreciative. At the end, they blew dry my hair and flipped it out just like the picture I showed them. I plan on going to California for Spring Break, so this hair color is well-suited for the beach. I plan on coming here for the rest of my hair appointments in the future especially since the staff is very accommodating and very interpersonal. Their prices are very reasonable. I'd gotten my hair cut here twice before and got compliments from friends on the result. I finally decided to bite the bullet and get my hair colored here too--Malika had discussed color options with me the last time I cut my hair and I had decided on a blended pinkish purple color. She was available for a same-day appointment and completed a 2-part process (lighten and color) in 3.5 hours. I have a lot of hair (it's also thick), so for someone else it could be quicker (but I already had a golden balayage as a base). I loved the results!! Malika is also up front about the results--she's already mentioned how quickly the color will come out and we've planned my next visit (FYI, "weirder" colors come out more quickly; the first time you lighten and then color your hair the color fades in 2-4 weeks, but subsequent colorings result in more vivid and longer-lasting colors). Malika is the head stylist and just dictates her workers to do the work like the washing, coloring, and styling. She does the majority of the cuts though and monitors the coloring. She takes the time to listen to what you want and also advises you to her best judgement. She directs her workers and they all work hard on everyone which allows her to keep roaming and supervising. It's a simple salon so don't expect frills and it's very small and can get cramped fast. I been coming here for a while and happy each time. She did a great job on my highlights and layered cut! Second time here and I think this is going to become my go-to hair place. They are very accommodating (called the day before for my Friday evening appointment, got there early, and they started on me while there were other clients). Malika and Sarah I believe her name is basically run the show here and they got the process down pat. They alternate on you based on their individual talents-Sarah washes and blow drys and Malika cuts and styles. They both deserve 5 stars for their kindness and bringing laughter to my visit! Malika threw in a free styling for me because she knew I was going out that night-how nice! Just needed a trim and that is exactly what I got.. didn't leave upset that I told them just a trim and they chopped 5 inches off. My hair looked very voluminous. Unfortunately Philly summers mean your blowouts become poofy curls (ugh humidity...), but nonetheless, my hair looked and felt healthy and shiny! $20 for wash, deep conditioning, cut, style..and a glass of wine! read more

Went here for a haircut using a Groupon that I got for $20 - actual price $38 if you pay by cash or $48 if you pay by card. I called on a Thursday and they said the only next available appointment was on Wednesday 5.30pm. I took it. Sharp 5.30pm they washed my hair, and then did the deep conditioning. Another girl with a Groupon also came for a 5.30pm appointment. Plus there was a third girl there for coloring her hair. So the lady at the salon was juggling 3 of us at the same time and I didn't like this because it felt very rushed e.g. She washed my hair and left the conditioner in and while I waited she washed other girls hair. Then back to me - trim. Then back to the second girl while I waited under the "drier". Then back to me for blow dry and "style" while the other girl sat under the drier. Anyway, I got a trim and then they blow dried my hair straight (other options not available with Groupon). For the $20, it was totally worth it!! If I was paying the $38/$48, I'd definitely want more attention and feel less rushed! Oh and also - while shampooing my hair, she practically yanked a few strands out "oops sorry my ring got stuck in your hair". Dislike. She gave me an $8 off coupon for use the next time. read more

My wife got her hair cut here today. They did an awful job. Awful. She didn't even change her style, she just went to get a fresh haircut of the hairstyle she already had, and they absolutely wrecked her hair. There is a three inch square patch that they cut (shaved?) to a length of three-quarters of an inch. She didn't even know it until I came to pick her up, because it was on the back of her head. I asked why on earth they did that, and the two genius stylists who had worked together to manage this awful haircut said that her hair stuck up too high in that place so they had to cut it short. Absurd. That's an absurd answer. I think the truth is that they simply are not good stylists and didn't know what they were doing. My wife and I will be spending tomorrow looking for another salon to try to salvage her hair as best as can be done. No one deserves to feel the way my wife was made to feel about herself leaving this salon. What an awful job they did, what an awful way they defended their terrible work, what an awful place all around. They have no business cutting hair. If your experience is anything like my wife's, you will not feel taken care of here; you will not walk out the door feeling good about the way you look. read more

*DO NOT BUY THIS GROUPON* I used this Groupon yesterday afternoon to get my hair highlighted for the first time. I made an appointment for 4:30pm. The stylist did not take me to the seat until 5:20pm. When I sat down, I explained to the main stylist that I would like to have "minimal" highlights. I wanted it to look as natural as possible, and I specially said that I did not want it to be 'bottle blonde' or all over dye. Fifteen minutes later, a different woman who colors the hair (and who did not speak English) came to my seat. I tried to show her the picture and explain what I wanted, but the first stylist interrupted and said that she had already spoken with the colorist. I did not end up showing the picture to the colorist. I should have seen that as the first red flag. The salon started to fill up with customers, and it was obvious that they were trying to rush us along. I was getting full highlights which takes a while to do, so I was hoping that they would take their time. After she was done putting in the dye and foils, I specifically asked that it be checked and taken out after 5 minutes so that the highlights aren't too dramatic. The stylist said OK, but after she got busy, she did not come back to me until 20 minutes later. When the wash and cut was complete, I took a look in the mirror. I was shocked and horrified. I have photographs to support this. She had left 1 inch roots in my hair! If you get highlights, you expect little to no roots to show; otherwise, it looks very trashy! It was 'bottle blonde' (a mix between sunny yellow, orange, and white), and it looked like I had dyed my hair all over, rather than highlights. I went home hoping that it was the lighting in the salon that made it so dramatic. As soon as my hair was fully dried, I realized how horrible it looked. I had to go into work (at a hospital!) like this the following day, and there was nothing to hide it. I had MULTIPLE co-workers and friends walk up to me about the hair color. The main response was "you left a few roots showing" or "wow, that's so blonde. Didn't you say you just wanted a few highlights?" Always the sympathetic look- so embarrassing! I called back the salon to complain. At first they were going to charge me to have it toned down, but after talking for a while, she agreed to tone it for free. However, after giving it more thought, I did NOT trust this same colorist or stylist with my hair. I asked the salon for my money back due to the poor service, and after a firm no, the conversation ended with a dial tone. They hung up on me. I couldn't believe how rude they were, and I plan to NEVER return to their salon. I do not recommend this salon. There are plenty of salons in Philadelphia who are also reasonably priced but actually know how to color hair. I bought the Groupon and made an appointment for 3pm. There was no one there but the young woman who took care of me made me feel so welcome! She was so friendly and her REALLY cute daughter was there. I should have asked for her name, but I'll definitely be back. My other stylist one day about a year and a half ago shut down for no apparent reason and never called or anything. It took me a while to get over it. All this time I've been either avoiding cutting my hair or going to The Chop Shop. Which is fine but I realized I was finally ready for another regular stylist. I'm glad the Groupon was for a place like this. I like chatting, I like sitting there hanging out. I like places like that. She mentioned they get pretty busy later in the day, which is good to know. They also have incentives for coming back like a bonus card and a little gift certificate, and their prices are amazing. Also the hair cut turned out great. I showed her a picture and we talked a little bit about it. I wanted more layers but she was honest with me and said that it would look too thin. She also said she thought I should take off about three inches. I took a deep breath in and said, "Yeah. Let's do it". And it looks really really good! Sexy, edgier than before, alternating layers. The nail spa bar is a hidden gem in the hustle and bustle of center city. The entrance isn't as in-your-face as most of the salons in the area, so it may be a little harder to find your way there. However, IT IS WORTH IT. I came in thinking i would get a trim and some brown highlights. I was then convinced to go blonde (which i had not done since freshman/sophomore college years). I thought my years of experimenting with colors were over. But then again, what the hell, WHY NOT. Let me tell you, my hair came out to this beautiful, warm blonde colors. My hair looked brighter and more vibrant than when i first walked in. My friend, who was against my blonde hair in college, told me that my hair looked beautiful and sophisticated. I'm not really well versed in salons or professional hair treatments, but my experience here was perfectly acceptable in my book. The location is a little strange, as the salon is tucked away on the second floor of a 3 story building that also contains a nail salon. We arrived at 1pm for our appointments, and the door to the salon was still locked. A girl came down from the nail salon to let us in/turn on the heat/offer us a complimentary glass of wine. The two women that were there during my appointment were both very sweet. My hair color was applied gently and rinsed off with a nice head massage. My friend's highlights and hair cut came out great, and I'm happy with my final product as well. Overall, don't be put off by the slightly shady outward appearance of this place. I came here after seeing a groupon listed for this place and called up to see the availability prior to making an appointment and to find out which to purchase for ombre. The owner had the time and date I wanted and informed me that if I did not purchase the groupon she would honor the pricing (which was perfect for me because I was considering dying my hair for the first time and wasn't sure if I wanted to go through with it or just get a haircut!) This is a no frills salon, but don't let the interior scare you away! The two ladies who were working Malika & Sam were wonderful. I really enjoyed their company. Malika looked at what I was planning to do and advised me otherwise. Instead of the "typical" ombre I got highlights that will only show up if I style my hair in certain ways which is the subtle look I was going for. I was really against bleaching my dark brown hair which Malika understood and picked out a dye that would show up against my hair. After my dye was washed out, I got a wonderful shampoo/conditioner by Sam. She gave my scalp a great massage and massaged my shoulders a bit in the chair. Manager Malika was succinct and helpful over the phone, and I was accommodated even when I showed up 40 minutes early! The salon is clean, simple, no frills. Malika and her coworker were very friendly and sweet. For this price, the experience was solid! Malika looked at my pictures and gave a a great haircut. She talked a lot about the Yelp reviews and how important they are for a new business, so it's a good thing I was happy with my cut or that would have been uncomfortable to promise a good review if I didn't love the experience! At no point in the visit was there a mention of drinks, which I had seen on other reviews, so that was a little disappointing. The salon is on the 2nd floor; it was small, clean, and simple - I was greeted by Malika and her co-workers. I provided Malika pictures to get an idea how I would like my hair and made suggestions as to how to highlight my dark hair without the bleaching process because I did not feel comfortable with it. I received a hair cut, shampoo & deep conditioning, and a blowout. She was very informative throughout the process and took her time with me which I appreciated. This was a really weird experience for me... I'll start off by saying that my hair turned out great and I was super happy with the results (had a cut and partial highlights with a groupon). My biggest issue with this place is just the lack of manners... and I'm not easily offended. But, when my hairdresser tells me to 'sit for 5-8 minutes' while she goes and does a brazillian wax for another customer (which ends up being 20 minutes of me just sitting there with wet hair) and then comes out and (no lie here) tells me every. single. detail. of what she just did. Including really unsavory sentences about 'butt-holes' ... it's hard to not be a little put-off. Eesh. I mean, the whole thing was so over the top rude, it was almost comical. The same lady who told me about the brazillian wax, also went into detail about her miscarriage a few months ago (asking me if I ever had one... what?!?) It seems like everyone else here has had really great experiences so maybe I just caught this lady in a mood? The lady who did my highlights and washed my hair however, was super cute and really nice. Her English was not great so she kept apologizing (which was totally unnecessary) but I really enjoyed her company :) OH ... and with the groupon for highlights, they WILL pressure you into getting this 'toner' thing for an additional 30 bucks, which I kind of don't think was necessary... and they kept saying that you NEED toner when you do highlights... but then why wasn't it included in my groupon... for highlights. Very pleased! I called based on a Groupon and the woman (Malika) was very nice and offered me a next day appointment which in my hectic schedule is golden. They match the Groupon price which was terrific with absolutely no renegotiating. My experience in other salons is when you go in with a set price Groupon somehow they end up marking it up when you get there and you pay more. Not at all the case here they were very honest about what they're going to do and what the price was. I needed my roots done, which is not an easy task. I have gone to the same salon in New Jersey for the last two years but since moving here needed a new place. I had no idea what color my old salon typically used and I have a mix of highlights low lights and (unfortunately) lots of gray which makes it complicated. Malika took a long time to match my color and talk to me about what I wanted. The end result is honestly better than my old salon for half the price. They did a nice shampoo and glaze and blowout as well. I will definitely be back especially since their blowouts are just $25 which is a good 15 bucks less than advertised in another salons. We mainly decided to buy the groupon because we heard good things plus a glass of wine while we get our hair done sounded great... I been a loyal customer the last 4 years since they opened. Malika always does an outstanding job considering that I am fine and hard to dye Asian hair. I have a tendency to get grey easily so she always makes sure when doing highlights or coloring to hide the greys. She does a great job with blending the highlights that the look is always glamorous but naturally sexy looking. The colors last a good 3 months which is incredible! Best part is that she uses a lot of organic products so no harsh chemicals involved. Her prices are incredible compared to other salons since it is cash only. Last night was my first time at Hair Spa Bar, I bought the Groupon and had Malika cut my hair. What a great experience! Malika was wonderful and 100% understood what I wanted with my cut. She made a few suggestions while cutting and explained everything she was doing along the way. The blow out at the end made my hair look like I should be going out to a fancy dinner, not just home to my apartment! She even convinced me to try low lighting my hair, which we scheduled for late April before a trip. The place is tiny and nothing too fancy, but I left looking and feeling like a million bucks. I went to Hair Spa Bar last night and I am SO happy with the results that I had to pop my yelp cherry and write a review. I bought a Groupon for a haircut. I called and found out that they will honor the Groupon price without purchasing one (Groupon takes a large % of the amount). Last month, I went to another Philadelphia salon to get a long bob with blue highlights. I didn't have the greatest experience and my hair wasn't blue! Hair Spa Bar isn't all fancy but I choose awesome customer service and results over a prissy, "high fashion" salon. Malika and her assistant (didn't catch her name) are awesome! I talked to Malika and I decided to try the blue again. She honored the Groupon discount even though I only bought the voucher for a haircut. It took some time to get my dark hair light enough to color but overall, it still took half the time that it took at the other fancy Philly salon I went to and my hair is an awesome myriad of blue! Ever since I started going to school in Philly I've struggled to find a nice place to get my hair cut-but boy was I glad I found these guys on Groupon. The ladies there are really nice, and super friendly. There were 3 Asian ladies, 1 who does most of the hair cutting (her English isn't the best, but literally every woman who got a hair cut that afternoon looked gorgeous), and two others who specialized in coloring. It's a nice, warm environment, in a little hole in the wall type of place. For my appointment I scheduled the day before, and actually ended up moving my appointment to an earlier time the day of, I was so happy they accommodated it. I was changing my hair style up and went from side bangs and dark brown hair, to blunt bangs with highlights (definitely a different look from before) so I was worried, but they did such a good job on it. I kept saying I wanted long layers and the hairdresser didn't seem to understand. The experience was awkward no music no other employees, no attempts at conversation. This place is excellent, the staffs are very friendly, I like what they done on my hair, I will definitely come back again !!!

I had a fantastic haircut at Hair Spa Bar. All the stylists were very professional and insightful, and each person that left the salon looked absolutely beautiful. It was also just a very pleasant experience, with an amazing scalp massage and complimentary beverages! They were very accommodating and seem to generally honor specials like Groupon or Daily Deals without you having to purchase through the third party. I am not sure what happened but I came to Hair Spa Bar for reverse ombre highlights. I have been here before for nails and single process hair color so I was not worried. During the appt the stylist was applying the high and colored the roots as well. I did not like it since it was not what I originally wanted so I asked her to fix it. After much discussion with her and the owner they said they will deposit color at the roots but will charge me for it& were openly not pleased to do it. I was so tired& had already been there for over an hour and even though it was not my mistake, I said ok. They deposited my original hair color at the roots. As the stylist was prepping my hair for wash she quickly said something to the owner who quickly came over. The owner said to me, did you have something in your hair? ...I said, "No.", since I knew not to wash my hair for 2 days prior to hair color treatment. Then i touched my hair and it was smooshy. I knew my hair was badly damaged. I am not stupid. But instead of them acknowledging it after they styled my hair they acted as if my hair was "great". I took a deep breath. The high lights looked not like the color I wanted and they even went on to say how other "Indians" love the color. I decided not to react to that slightly racial comment. I never said I wanted to look like a particular race or feel that I should do what others in that group do. And personally I am not a fan of henna, if that was even what they were referring to, but I am not sure so I didn't assume and still stayed quiet about it. All that was on my mind was that the structure & integrity of most of my hair was ruined. And I went through this years ago after a body perm& deep down inside I knew all I could do is cut my hair off, But at another salon of course, and just wait for it to grow back. They then offered to do "deep conditioning" for free of charge. And still not acknowledging that something happened and my hair was destroyed. I never wanted to run out of a place so bad before. I thought to myself that they had done something wrong, they were not acknowledging their error and acted as if I had done it. I knew that getting upset at them would not fix my hair or un-do what ever the stylist had done. I had to go to trader joes to get some groceries and hid my destroyed hair under a hat. I was pretty upset inside since summer was around the corner and I like having long hair especially in the summer but as I was walked around grabbing my groceries I was thinking about how I needed to cut it all off but I couldn't dwell on it too much since I was starving after spending 2-3 hours at this salon and being at Trader Joes was making my hunger pains go crazy. I spent the next 2 weeks busy in finals and doing at home deep conditioners, only washing my hair with honey & put oils in my hair trying to convince myself that a little tlc would repair my damaged hair. After consultations at 2 other salons I cut even more off. Now new hair is growing slowly about a 1/2 an inch so far but the rest is pretty destroyed. I am limited to only straight hair styles since in its natural state is pretty fried but the catch 22 is that you are not supposed to put heat on damaged hair. I get over things really quickly but I will admit that this experience did make me sad and I wish I had not gone here for my reverse ombre; highlights appt. I was just sick of the dark brown hair and wanted a change for the summer and had hoped that lightening it up a bit would camouflage the few pesky grey hairs I get that are so obvious against dark hair. At this point I don't know what to do With my hair natural wavy curl pattern all gone I can no longer just wash& go and I hate being a slave to a blow dryer& flat iron...or wearing hats all the time...in warm weather read more
