Literally what the heck! I went to the shop at 9am on a Wednesday. They were supposed to be open…read morebut didn't open doors until 9:30. That was a minor detail, it didn't bother me too much. I get in and the woman washing my hair asked if I had dreadlocks before? I have 4c hair and it's long. The implications of her question and the way she asked me was disgusting and I contemplated getting up and leaving. I paid $15 additional dollars for a deep condition but honestly it was a waste of money because the lady washing hair does not do a good job. I proceed to get my hair blow dried and the man doing it was polite and courteous but I will note that yes they use excessive heat but I saw past that because I have very resilient hair that can take a lot of heat. After an hour of blow drying and wincing from the heat burning my scalp at times, I'm now heading to get my hair straightened. This is when it gets interesting, the man who greeted me when I walked in and told me that a trim is $15 is straightening my hair. He shows me how much he's going to trim and proceeds to give me a hair cut. He was scissor happy which l don't mind because I prefer healthy ends over length. Now it's time for me to pay. He tells me that is $115. I was not having that. I stayed calmed though. Why wasn't I going to pay that you ask? Because I asked how much it would cost as soon as I entered and he was very vague, I kept pressing him for a price but all he said was that it could cost $55 and up. Now I asked them to break down $115 to me and they said the wash, blow dry and style for my hair alone was $75. Then the deep condition was $15 and the hair cut was $25. I refused to pay for a hair cut that I was told was going to be a trim. It's not my fault that you're scissor happy. I stood firm and got the price down to $105 and since it was my first time it came down to $95. Although the woman who washed my hair insisted that I've been there before. I paid them the $95 and still left a tip. Why such a long review? It's simple, I'm tired of hair salons taking advantage of African American customers and up charging them at the end.

What I really appreciate is that she listens to what you want and what you want for your hair long term and honestly let's you know what is possible now and what is possible with future cuts and color sessions. I have followed her from a salon on the north side of Chicago, a salon on Chicago's south side, and now to her own salon in Calumet City.

No appointment, just walked in. I got there at 8:40am and was immediately seated as the shampoo bowl, left at 10:30am. Nej (? I believe is his name) serviced me! Everyone was so kind! The salon is clean, open and airy with a nice R&B playlist going in the background! You know how with some stylists when they blow dry and use a flat iron/curler to your hair you can feel the extreme heat on your scalp and ear? I didn't feel a thing the entire time. I was absolutely comfortable and didn't need to hold down or cover my ear like I'm used to doing. They'll be seeing me again! Very satisfied!

The next time I went, my stylist was a much larger gentleman (not sure of his name) who used ALOT of heat. That's fine if the hair strands are thick and can handle it, but one look at my hair and you can see that each strand is fine. Although he did use heat protectant, he passed once with Marcels, then again with flat irons, and then again to curl with the flat irons. My hair was basically flat to my head with curls at the bottom. Fluffing didn't help. Fast forward two weeks, a deep condition, hair mask, steam treatment, and wash... the heat damage is irreversible. I'm not mad at anyone. It was the risk I took. Bottom line: The service isn't personalized to your hair or even your hair type. Just whatever makes your hair look aesthetically appealing, regardless of the method or the damage it may cause.

That would've been fine but I didn't get the right color that matched my hair so I ended up going with normal braids. I told Ola and the Braider who braided my hair I wanted mid back but it ended up being longer. These look thin, rushed, etc. when I asked Ola how much, she hesitated, then said "270" when I told her that's the price of her boho and asked why it was the same, she said "we do things differently." And "it's because they're long" but that's not my fault, I asked over the phone and in person for mid back. I'm also confused because these are probably the worst braids I've ever gotten, and the least amount, yet the most expensive ... and I'm from the city. Despite remaining polite, there was rude and passive aggressive communication I received the whole time. She eventually said "250" since she asked me to pick up gel for her and didn't pay me back for it yet. I still don't even think it's worth 200 at most. I am extremely disappointed.
