I'm new to town and I'm not into trying new stylists lol my old stylist from Vegas has texted me every 2 weeks to see how I've been and to see if I found a new place. Someone mentioned Mena's Hair to me at a party over a month ago and recommended it because his wife went and he said our hair was similar. He spoke highly of the business but I was still hesitant. I love the fact that they are 24 hours! That's fantastic because I'm a super early bird! I had found the one closest to home and read the reviews on Yelp DAILY lol trying to make a decision. Today was the day! Instead of heading to the gym, I decided to go get my hair done. I arrived and the door was locked which was good because it was early but Emed saw me :) he smiled and advised the gentleman to open the door. I was greeted by a crew of nice men who said "good morning, how are you?" Which was nice because I'm the annoying morning person and I love to greet and be greeted lol I felt comfortable and the young man at the desk asked what services I needed. Basic, wash, deep conditioning and blow out. I went to get a cape, and got right to the shampoo bowl. Emed was incredible! Solid wash! I know the reviews said rough but I like rough because my scalp needs cleaning! The conditioner treatment was nice, sitting under the steamer. I was then sent to Aydin. He was very kind and did a fantastic job on my hair! I felt like a new woman! I appreciate what Mena's offers and I was out the door in 75 minutes! I will definitely be back! read more

I came to Mena's Hair Design out of curiosity. I've always been a Dominican blowout girl, but I kept seeing people talk about the Egyptian silk press--and I had to know what the hype was about. When I arrived, I asked for a wash, deep condition, and style. I made sure to specifically request no keratin in my deep conditioner. The guy who washed my hair scrubbed every last ounce of oil out of my scalp. He was heavy-handed--which I kind of expected from the TikTok reviews--but if you're new to this place, just know: the wash is aggressive, so brace yourself. The steam deep conditioning treatment was nice and relaxing. After that, a different guy blow-dried my hair. The blow-dry technique was very similar to what the Dominicans do--super straight using just the blow dryer. Then Mena himself stepped in to do the silk press. And this is where I saw the difference. He used marcel irons to press my roots first--that's what separates the Dominican blowout from the Egyptian silk press. After that, he used flat irons to curl and finish the style. I showed him a photo of the look I wanted, and he immediately set the expectation by saying, "We'll see what we can do, but it won't look exactly the same." I appreciated the honesty. He also asked if I wanted a trim. I said yes... but what I got felt more like a cut. I've since heard others say the same--that they're heavy-handed with trims. So maybe "trim" here means taking off all the ends that need to go, whether you're ready or not. Overall, the style looked good. I'm sure I have some heat damage now, but I'm personally not too worried about it. If heat damage is a concern for you, I'd recommend asking them to go lighter on the heat--or maybe skipping it altogether. The vibe inside was cool. It was kind of funny seeing a group of men doing silk presses, but everyone was really friendly. I paid $90, with a $5 discount for using cash. That said, a few things need improvement. The restroom was nasty--definitely could use a deep clean--and I had to ask for a new towel because the first one they gave me was already wet. The smocks could also use an upgrade. Would I go back? Yes, especially if I'm in the city again. I'd probably book with the dark-skinned guy in the back next time--he seemed really into his work and did a great job on the woman I saw him styling. read more

Absolutely Terrible Experience If I could leave 0 stars, I would. My experience at Mena's Hair Salon was beyond disappointing--disrespectful, disorganized, and downright discriminatory. I've visited this salon a few times a year as a last resort when I don't feel like doing my own hair, but this visit will definitely be my last. I walked in just before 12:30 PM with a busy day ahead and the intention of leaving no later than 2:15 PM. Upon entering, no one greeted me. Instead, I was met with blank stares as if I were invisible. After an uncomfortable wait, someone finally acknowledged me, and I explained I wanted a wash, blow-dry, trim, and flat iron--no deep condition because I was on a time crunch. Here's where the nightmare began: as soon as I sat down for a wash, a young man (Tomas) approached me, insisting I needed a $15 deep condition because "my scalp was dry," which was absurd since I still had my hat on at the time. When I pointed this out, he asked me to remove my hat, and after glancing at my scalp for a second, he doubled down. I firmly declined, and he muttered something to his colleagues in their language before walking away. After the wash, I was moved to another side of the shop for a blow-dry. Three different people came up to check my slip--no communication, just inefficiency. I sat there for nearly two hours with my hair practically dry before Tomas came and moved me yet again to a different area, where I waited another 30 minutes. By this time, I was extremely frustrated. Finally, Sammie, the only decent employee there, came to blow-dry my hair. He was polite and considerate, especially when I asked him to ease up on the heat. After he finished, I had to wait another 2-5 minutes for Tomas, who lazily strolled back to the booth like he had no job to do. When he finally started parting my hair, he left mid-service to laugh and chat with another employee across the room--completely dismissing me in the middle of explaining what I wanted. That was the last straw. I told Tomas he wouldn't be doing my hair and left. By this point, it was 3:30 PM--three hours later--and I had nothing to show for my time except a wash and blow-dry. To add insult to injury, when I went to pay, I was charged $50 for the wash and blow-dry! They tried to justify it by saying they were "busy," but that was a blatant excuse for their poor time management and unprofessionalism. This salon is a disaster. The staff are rude, unorganized, and have zero respect for their customers' time or requests. If you value your time, money, and dignity, do not go here. It's not worth the frustration, no matter how close it is to you. I'll never be back. read more

From the massage while washing, and scratching my scalp, deep conditioning, blow dry, and style. I feel so relaxed and my hair always comes out silky soft and pretty. The wash was great and so was the blow dry and then I went to Mena chair for my haircut. He asked me what I wanted done. I told him I knew I had some dead ends. Could he show me how much he thought needed to be cut? It was way more than I was ready for so I told him could he do less and I would come back in a couple weeks and trim some more. He then told me it is going to grow back and just chopped my damn hair off and I'm not talking a little bit I'm talking a lot. To make it worse it's not even. He didn't care to blend it in. I was out of his chair in less than three minutes. I'm not even joking. I didn't even realize how bad my hair was till I got home and absolutely just want to cry. You can see it by the picture that he cut a lot when I was only wanting maybe 4 inches and you can see the other picture he just chopped right across the front of my hair and did not even blend it. This particular location I will not recommend at all I had my hair blow dried for 40 mins after telling him my scalp was burning I literally had to get up. I currently have a red scalp and it's sore to the touch in certain areas. I have been going to Menas for years I know now to stick to my normal location. I'm highly disappointed!!!!!! read more

Hair usually looks good when it is complete but the process is the problem. The blow dryer and roughness of the men pulling on your head makes it an unpleasant experience (especially for children). Also, depending on who does your hair, the process for karat in treatment is always different. The workers are always tentative. Some put the chemical on then wash it out while others don't wash it at all. I'm always a little afraid but it seems to work out. My daughter refuses to ever go to an Egyptian stylist again after her experiences. Smart girl! read more

I arrived at 330 was immediately sent to have my hair washed after about 40 minutes I was confused why I was still getting my hair "washed" (I've been going to Menas on 95th since 2014) the man starts to LITERALLY PULL OUT huge chucks of my hair with his fingers I asked him to stop he laughed in my face . Then used a comb to snatch out more of my hair the garage was full of my hair I started to cry. I asked if he could have someone take over or help him he said "you the problem not me" and kept going now is 510 another man came and detangled half of my head with a brush (no pain minimum hair loss) I asked if he could do the same method he said "almost done I'm the professional" while I'm still crying he is laughing the whole process as if it's funny he's pulling my hair out. The owner comes and tells me "don't cry sweetheart" I asked if he could have someone else finish he walked away. I've had only great experiences at Menas; however, I'm not surprised by some of the bad reviews. It is a Hair Salon, so if you don't know the stylists asks your friends who you should see when you go. Menas always has at least 10 stylist available, but only one or two are cosmetologist (able to apply chemicals). I take my daughter there every 3-6months for deep condition, cut and style. She has natural hair, and she doesn't complain of roughness but she is usual placed with the same stylist. They worked some real magic! They mostly curl, wave, cut, straighten weave or natural hair. They cut and style wigs too! Last time I was there a older woman (70ish) was there to get her wig cut and restyled by Mena himself! She waited a really long time, but I could see that she was happy and satisfied. Some stylist are worth the wait. read more

I visited Menas in Lansing yesterday to get me and my 7 year old daughter hair shampooed and curled. I went to one stylist and she went to another. The stylist John took it upon himself to call himself clipping my baby ends and chopped all her hair off. She went in with a head full of hair and came out with a choppy layered cut for a grown woman. She can no longer wear her cute little ponytails or bums and other little girl hairstyles. I've gone to Menas before but this time was awful. I hadn't been since the winter so not for about 6 months. During that time my hair had grown quite long and was thick and healthy. I had been going to a different stylist-Max's in Hyde Park. I was at Menas this past Friday to get my hair colored because I couldn't go to my regular stylist due to a scheduling conflict. Tamer did my hair at Menas. I color my hair because I'm not ready to be grey just yet. Not only was my hair still grey in the front but Tamer hacked off almost two inches of my hair saying he was only clipping the split ends. It looks like someone cut it up with a hatchet. It takes months for my hair to grow out and it had gotten so long. Now it's hacked up and uneven. I can't even explain how deeply affected I am by this...I don't even want to go out in public without wearing a hat. read more

Went to Mena's today in Lansing to get my hair bleached to blonde. I went to Mena's in country club hills at first and they did not do my hair the way I wanted it at all. I was told by a friend that I should come to this location so I did and I was very happy with the way my hair came back. My stylist name was Daniel and he did a very good job with my color and with flat ironing it. His customer service was also very good! To start I always seem to have to get my hair washed twice the first person to wash it never washes it correctly, the second person to rewatch my hair literally was pulling and tugging my hair so hard I got a headache I expressed my discomfort he just kept saying " sorry " but continued to not handle my hair with care. Secondly, I originally came in for a press and trim they always try to tell me different prices after i've been serviced so I called before hand to ask how much over the phone. Once again over charged me for a " cut " I didn't ask for or came in for. Went back and fourth regarding the price for like 10 minutes noting that I was not okay with the price leaving not even being style correctly. I obviously don't know what the difference between a "cut" and "trim" is and if I asked for a trim why am I being charged for a cut when the person doing my hair just told me " to trust him " and did what I thought which was trim my hair. I've been coming for some a bit of time now, and Daniel is amazing. No one has ever straighten my hair the way he does. He's extremely educated on hair care as well if I have questions he will answer. But the results of my hair is always perfect! The first time I came to Daniel I had cut my own hair pretty badly and unevenly, I knew if I went to a salon they would give me a such a short cut but Daniel managed to give me such a beautiful layered style that did not require too much cutting. read more

I've always past Mena's and knew that they were in the neighborhood and thought I should try them one day. I've previously inquire about services at Mena's just so I could have another option besides my regular stylist that I go to. The prices kinda of blew me back when I first inquire. I went ask what it would cost for a simple blow out and flat iron and I was inform it would be $60 for the services. I was really astonished by the response. So I just decided that I would only use them as an emergency. This happen almost 6 months ago. I recently walked in there again due to the fact someone referred me to a specific stylist and it was the same scenario, all I needed was a blowout and a flat iron. When I spoke to the guy he simply told me it was going to be $50 cash. I have come to the conclusion that Mena's is not a place for me I can go to my own stylist and pay $35 for a blowout and a flat iron. I think Mina's prices are ridiculous way overpriced and the customer service that you get inside the shop this is really a well they don't make you feel welcome it seems like a a place that's hurting cattle.... definitely will not be back read more

I recently went to Mena's this past weekend after browsing the yelp reviews. Overall this is a salon that I will never visit again. I'm transitioning to natural & I wanted to try the dominican blowout. Now when i walked in i saw sisters with all different hair textures and backgrounds. This factor alone put me at ease. I've had several bad experiences with salons, but I thought I had found a great home. To my surprise I was absolutely wrong! At Mena's they talk to you as if they are paying you.... sit here, go there, do this, do that. My hair was washed, conditioned and then dried. Once I got into the chair to get my hair done, I noticed that my hair was still dry!! Now several people on this site have said that Mena's specializes in natural hair care. Absolutely NOT!!!! Sam, who is a horribly stylist, told me that my hair was dry and damaged but couldn't offer any solutions. He just continued to yank my head back and forth & talk on his cell phone. I was unsatisfied!! To top it all off, I was charged a $5 fee for using my debit card!?!?!? I hate this salon & I encourage those who are transitioning to never ever go here!!! Trust me!!! If your natural please read and BEWARE of this salon Came here after taking down my sew in and I'm natural so my hair was in a big curly fro. It was very early around 8:15am. The minute I came in the guy looked at me as if he was not about to do anything to my hair. He was currently washing someone's hair and there was nobody else in there but her and I. He told me to wait for someone else. I immediately knew it was because I was natural and he didn't want to be bothered. Finally after 20 minutes someone came to wash my hair who was not a stylist he only washes and conditions. Upon finishing he took me to the front to see who would do my hair and all hell broke lose. They all started talking in there language not one of them wanting to touch me. Finally i got someone to do it However he insisted I needed a deep condition in order for him to do my hair..It was extra so I was hesitant plus I didnt know what was in the conditioner but I knew I needed my hair washed so I just went ahead and did it. So I go back to the bowl and he begins to condition my hair and he attempted to comb it out. He nearly broke my neck off trying to comb thru my hair. I told him to stop and so he gave the comb to me for me to do it myself. He then leaves me to go find another customer. He rubbed through her hair and saw that she was a permed customer so he took her instead. The shampoo guy came back to rinse my hair after I combed it out and once again he brought me to the front and all hell broke lose again as to who was going to style. I went from chair to chair because they all passed me off. Moral of story.. if your natural this place does not want your business because they are lazy and afraid of our hair. read more

Mena's Hair design is a nice place to go to get your hair done if you can't get an appointment at your normal salon, and you want to be in and out in an hour without an appointment. I also like they they are open on Sundays, & Mondays when all others if not most salons are closed. I believe in healthy hair care so I would never make Mena's my regular salon for my hair, because of all the blow drying they do. Although your hair will be bouncy, pretty, and silky, all that blow drying isn't good for your hair, which is why I only go every once in a while. The staff is very attentive, and pleasant, the prices are great, and they do a great job at styling african american thick/course hair with or without a relaxer. read more

For a shop to specialize in natural hair, they are quick to recommend a relaxer. If you have thick natural hair you would expect the hair salon to give you several options on how to straighten your hair without chemicals. I did agree to receive a relaxer only after the hair stylist kept asking me why dont I want a perm. I will live with my decision on letting them talk me into a perm but my issue is STOP promoting you specialize in natural African American hair when you keep recommending a perm to clients. Real shops that specialize in natural hair do not recommend you put chemicals in but discuss all options so you can make a sound decision and work toward maintaining your natural hair. I was not provided options until after they asked numerous times about me getting a perm. This shop appears lazy & dont want to put the effort & time with natural hair because it would take them too much time when they can just throw chemicals in and blow dry you with extreme heat from blow dryer causing heat damage. I am fully responsible for letting them talk me into a relaxer, but I wouldn't recommend this shop for numerous of reasons and the main one is very pricey, poor English and the lack of consultation with 1st time customers who expected more from a shop that prides themselves on maintaining clients with natural hair. My cousin warned me not to go to Menas because the extreme heat they use during a blow dry alone will damage your hair. I do not appreciate an owner who does not care how their clients feel after services are rendered. You are supposed to be Professional hair experts but yet you didnt provide consultation for new clients, you didnt explain pricing. You just state get a Cape, you write on a ticket & ask if you want anyone in particular. Piece of advice, take the time to discuss what your clients want and make recommendations other than relaxers. Ensure your new customers know what steps take place and encourage them to speak up if they are not comfortable. Start by asking clients is this your 1st visit oppose to assuming everyone has been to shop & take the time to explain how things work at Menas. At least that us how other businesses conduct themselves. read more
