I have been looking for a stylist who understands how to give a sophisticated haircut. Brandy did an exceptional job. She spent a good amount of time looking at my hair, looking at my face, and asked me what I was hoping for. Then she went to work and gave me an excellent cut. I went here on Friday afternoon to get a haircut with Brandy. She did a great job at listening to what I was looking for and creating a hairstyle that would work with my natural curls and with straightened hair. You can really tell she takes her craft seriously. The business takes a lot of precautions for COViD, which I appreciated. They wipe down everything prior to your entry. Update--I've continued to see Brandy since she helped me make my big hair transformation from long hair to a pixie over 2.5yrs ago. The pandemic happened between then and now, during which I decided to grow my hair out again (what better time then the months when no one would see me, save for over Zoom calls?). She helped me transition my hair through all the awkward grow out stages to make them less awkward and continues to do an awesome job cutting my now shoulder-length hair. Also: I didn't mention in my initial review that Brandy, beyond being extremely skilled at her craft, is also just lovely to talk with any time I go in. Very calm, up to chatting if you're feeling it, but also down to just listen to whatever music is on at her studio. I went in to get a pixie cut, which is the shortest style I've ever gotten. Brandy was honest about what my hair could do (I have fine, thin hair), and was able to come up with a style and cut that looked great. She even encouraged me to let the cut settle for a few days and come back in if there were any issues. I ended up coming back in to shorten the back and she did it free of charge. I just want to echo the reviews that try to describe just what a phenomenal stylist Brandy is. I've gotten my hair cut by her twice so far, and it's indescribable how precise and perfect they've been. She is one of the most talented stylists I've ever seen, and I've lived in many cities across the country. After moving here last year I tried Pageboy but was disappointed with the cuts I got there. I was about to try some stylists at Mint, which is around the corner from me, but realized that most of the positive reviews for Mint were mainly for Brandy. I have thick, wiry hair that I like to have short - it's unfortunately not an easy feat to make it look good. Brandy has managed to make it look stylish and sharp, natural yet polished. I went to Brandy back when she was at Mint on Ellsworth. She was my favorite stylist to date in Pittsburgh, and unfortunately she left and started cutting hair on the Southside - a bit too far for me to make the trek regularly. After a long, long time of wandering between salons, trying to find a stylist and salon that could meet expectations - I never did. I finally searched Yelp for "brandy hair" and Hairsmith popped up. Apparently, she's been here, operating her own place for a year! I wish I'd known! The place is awesome, historic, and feels like a good cross between a barber shop and a salon. It is totally Brandy. Online booking is so convenient and awesome. I don't know why not everywhere offers this service. I do wish that it sent a calendar event so it would appear in my Google Calendar. Perhaps in the future. Regarding the haircut - I explained what I was kind of going for, and she listened, paid close attention to the shape of my head, the directions my hair grows, assessed potential issues with the cut ahead of time, was vocal about her plan and precisely what she was going to do, and what she was doing while she was cutting. She's detailed, but efficient about it. Her training was clearly excellent (I've had consistently good cuts from stylists who studied at Toni & Guy) and she seems to take pride in her work. I've been hair salon shopping for some time now, as it's been awhile since I've had an experience that made me want to commit to one (in terms of overall experience, quality, price, and location). I'm happy to say that I think I found a keeper with Hairsmith. I had a great all around experience getting my hair cut by Brandy. First of all, she gave me exactly the cut I wanted. She asked follow-up questions to be sure she understood exactly what I was looking for, and I was super happy with the results. She has a laid back vibe; conversing with her was comfortable and interesting but never felt forced, which is something that I've found is surprisingly rare among stylists. The salon is small but feels spacious, and it has plenty of charm. There are a few other things that set this salon apart to me. One is that you can book your appointment online, and it's super easy. The system sends you a confirmation email and/or text and a reminder shortly before the appoint (only if you indicate you want it to). For people like me who prefer to book reservations and appointments online, this is a really nice feature! Another thing is that in addition to being a good hairsmith, Brandy is obviously a really nice and genuinely caring person. For example, she gives senior citizens a big discount on haircuts because she saw that it was a need in the neighborhood, and you can tell they love her for it. One of them stopped by to say hello during my haircut, and there's another lady who always offers to get her coffee from Constellation when she passes by. She also gave me some insightful advice on alleviating a frizzy phase that my hair always goes through when it air dries, and offered to try to get a product that is hard to find in stores so that she'd have it for me the next time I came in. Finally, I got the sense that she cares a lot about giving her customers a good experience. She asked me for feedback about the online booking system and some other things about the salon space. These little details really made me feel comfortable and welcome, and I ended up with a great cut! I will definitely be coming back here for future haircuts and color. read more

She listens intently to what you want and makes it happen (even better than you planned). She is a pro. I've been going here to get my hair cut for awhile and I have yet to be disappointed. The price is just right for Bloomfield/Lawrenceville, considering the cut is high quality and the owner/stylist is so thoughtful about what they're doing with your hair. They are very friendly but still somehow stay focused on your hair -- so you end up feeling like you're in good hands when you visit. The salon is just the right size and has everything you need for a solid haircut -- especially if you're a guy. But I imagine that the more stylish gals probably get killer cuts coming here, too. I was lucky to pick Hairsmith as the first place to get my hair cut after moving to Pittsburgh. It's so great! Easy online booking and Brandy is super chill and gave me one of the best haircuts I've had in years. I came back a second time and had the same great results. I also got my hair colored from Anthony who just started there and he's equally as great. He was meticulous and focused on getting my hair light enough (it's very dark). And the result was great. Brandy is a hair whisperer, I swear! She scolded me for not brushing my hair (I'm sorry! I hate brushing my hair!) in the sweetest way. When I was unsure as to what I wanted to do, she offered suggestions. I sent her pictures of what I liked but didn't feel confident they were exactly my style. She was honest, funny, kind, and helpful. In the end i ended up with the perfect hair style and cut. The highlights she did were superb and subtle enough for work but bold enough in the sunlight. She knows her stuff! She cares about the client and the outcome. She also as an adorable son who has some pretty rad hair. When she opened this shop I was ecstatic. I can't wait to get my hair done again. Which is saying a lot because I'm the type of girl that washes, conditions, and lets air dry. No brushing, no products, no heat, nothing. Not impressed at all. I have a pixie cut. Showed Brandi how I like to wear my hair, with the bangs down, meaning the bangs need to be straight. Wish I'd taken a picture. My bangs were hilariously crooked, uneven, and shorter on both sides by the temples. Looked weird! She didn't trim my sideburns, didn't clean up behind my ears, and didn't touch my neck or the back hairline. She literally just trimmed random chunks of my hair and called it a day. Asked her about trimming the sideburns when she was 'done' and she said they look better long. Ummm...figured I could do that at home. Wish I'd been able to see the back. Brandi thinks that she knows what looks good and won't listen to what you want. Spent two days desperately trying to make this butchered cut look halfway decent. Gave up and pulled out the trimmers. This is where the overall unevenness was revealed. My boyfriend went to work on my neck. While he can't do a great job, it now looks 1000x better than when I walked out of this shop. I have to laugh because if I don't, I'll start crying about wasting $70 on this terrible haircut. Back to the barber for me... read more

By "great," I mean someone who will listen to what I like and what I know about my hair, and won't try to sell me a "system" with twenty different products. Someone who will give me a haircut that I -- a hairstyling klutz with the curling iron scars to prove it -- can actually maintain. Brandy at Hairsmith is the stylist I've been looking for. She not only did a fantastic job cutting my very straight and fine hair, but she also explained what she was doing and why. I left understanding how my hair was cut and the techniques she used to build in volume as she dried and styled it. Brandy also told me the types of products that she used so I could style it at home. She was friendly, great to talk with, and clearly brings lots of skill and experience to her work. The salon is a small, quiet space in an older building on Penn Ave, between Children's Hospital and 40th Street. I found side-street parking pretty easily, but you might want to leave a little time to find a space. Online booking was really easy, and I got an e-mail confirmation and reminders as well. Hair smith has also restructured their pricing, so it's by cut not gender, which is a giant win if you have short hair. I like short bangs, so if I dont think they are at a length I like, I can tell her and it's not an issue for her to take a few extra minutes to cut them to my preferred length an aditional bang trims basically come with the hair cut (), and touch ups are really affordable. Just had my hair cut/ rescue with Anthony Albin. I had a haircut years ago that I loved from him while he was at a different salon. Since then, I have had mediocre cuts but didn't know how to locate Anthony. Much to my surprise, I found him on line after having just had an abysmal hair cut that left me with a 70's shag and rather desperate. I had low expectations as he was not starting with my former full head of long hair. And yet somehow he salvaged , what my husband referred to as "age appropriate hair" ugh!!! He listened carefully to my issues i.e. I have curly hair but usually flat iron but on occasion would like to be able to go curly and not have my hair look like a giant frizzy bowling ball which is what I came in with. He listened carefully and cut with precision and was able to deliver a modern, clean look that's sassy and yet controlled. The irony here is that I had given the previous hair stylist a photo of the cut I wanted but which was sadly not executed. I forgot the photo and had to describe the look to Anthony and he was able to deliver without any illustration just based on our conversation.
