The "stylists" were friendly and seemed knowledgable. My wife and I spent about an hour looking through fabric and having my measurements taken, which overall was fun. My sone small criticism at this stage was I felt they prodded me a bit too much into upgrading from "custom" to "bespoke", despite the fact that I had already agreed to spend what I consider a lot of money. After we finalized all details, they told me it would take 6-8 weeks to make and arrive. Eeeee. That's longer than I wanted to wait...but fine, good things are often worth the wait. Four weeks later, I received a call and was told they haven't even started making the suit as they don't actually have the fabric I selected. They then (albeit gently) again suggested I upgrade to "bespoke" so I could get a similar fabric. I was frustrated at how long it took them to identify the issue, so I ultimately asked for a refund and they didn't fuss too much and reasonably promptly refunded my credit card today. To give them the benefit of the doubt, they very well may have been a "one off" kind of mess up, but I lost patience and am now in the market for a competitor.

If you want to dress to impress, yes, a suit costs $1000, sorry. Bespoke or custom made is not so much about the fabric, although that is very important, but its about the fit and the tailoring. I now have my own salesperson, Jack, who is fast, smart and well versed in mens clothing. I started at Rego by purchasing a bespoke shirt. Wow. Very nice. Made in India. Lots of vendors can do the same, but I did enjoy choosing the fabric with the owner and his son. Next, I brought some suits in that required tailoring. Their in-house tailor knows his stuff. I cannot tell you how many horror stories of local or recommended tailors who have botched work on my suits. If you require alterations, take them to Rego. Its a good way to get a feeling about the place. Finally, I bought a bespoke suit. It is marvelous. Perfect fit all around. Yes, $1000 but for me its and investment. Jack suggested I buy an extra pair of suit pants as these wear out first. I declined but a good idea. I wanted to get some dress pants as well. Bespoke start at $300 and go to $400. I selected off the rack for $225 and I am quite happy. Both came in and some tailoring required -- no cost. You can also get a shoe shine while you wait.

I went in to try the suit on last week and it was so great. The jacket fit so well, I was very impressed. The pants were fine but I expected them to be slimmer, maybe a personal choice but I was told they would make the changes no problem and I'm just waiting for the alterations now. Other than the slimness of the pant leg, everything else actually fit really well. I got my jacket unlined and it looks really good. I was worried it might look weird but they did such a professional job that I think it looks better than if it were lined and now it's also a little cooler to wear. These are fabulous, well crafted pieces that are actually made in Toronto! The quality of the materials, the design and craftsmanship are stellar. They are not "cheap" per se, but when you factor in the high quality and the fact that these coats will continue to look amazing for years, it's actually a bargain. Plus in this world climate, I think it's important that we try to keep manufacturing in Canada! The owner John was very friendly and patient, spending about 45 minutes helping me try on coats until I found the perfect one. The thoughtful touches on the coat to make it warm, yet stylish is insane. Fur lined pockets! Extra hidden layer to keep you warm. Clever design that ensures the fit is fabulous but with an extra piece in the front to ensure no sneaky blast of cold wind gets in. I'm quite confident that this is as warm if not warmer than my ugly puffer coat! Did I mention how exquisite the fabric is? Omg. It is beautiful to look at and also feels so soft and sleek. They have a workshop in the back and do alterations for their coats as well as any others that you bring in. Lisa, John's sister was very helpful and she was responding to my emails at 10:30pm on a Sunday night (!) and again at 7am the next morning! By the end of my time at the shop, John felt like a friend. What a lovely, kind man!! John said that they will have their spring coats out after Easter, and I will definitely be going back! A large tear on the sleeve of my custom-made sheepskin leather jacket prompted me to GOOGLE "leather jacket repairs". I called a number of businesses to inquire the nature of their work and the approximate cost. I landed on Mary Ellen for none other than the ease and confidence by which I was advised. It was great to see the repair was done tastefully. The workmanship was superb. The sleeve was repaired with a matching patch sewed on the other sleeve. I was pleasantly surprised that the repair actually enhanced the overall style and look of the jacket. And the price was very competitive! Though this was my first and only experience I sensed that Mary Ellen is "old school", meaning, every customer, large or small, gets the same honest and friendly treatment. There are no fancy machines to speed up the job, and no unnecessary sales pitch to convince you that they are good. I will not hesitate to give my future business again to Mary Ellen.
