On a recent trip to Maui, we decided to visit Haleakala National Park for a hike on the Halemau'u Trail. This was a special day trip as one of my nieces was about to get a marriage proposal during this hike.
This trail was selected since it was listed as a moderately challenging hike that is just a little over 2 miles round trip with phenomenal views.
We arrived at the park early in the morning and paid the $30 entrance fee for each car. We briefly stopped at the visitor center for a quick potty break. The restrooms were clean and and well-maintained.
We then drove to the trail and there was ample parking in the lot.
Upon descending on the trail, we realized some of us may not have worn the right shoes. The trail was mostly flat and downhill with lots of rocks, big and small. Hiking or trail shoes are definitely recommended for this trail. We hiked a little over a mile to the crater so coming back was uphill on the same rocks. Some parts of the trail were narrow and one needs to step aside to let others pass. Great photo opps are sprinkled along the way.
The proposal happened and it was so special and romantic to be part of it.
I definitely look forward to coming back to do this hike again in the future. Dress in layers as Haleakala does tend to get chilly.
I don't recommend this trail for smaller children as the parents may be stuck carrying them back to the car! The youngest in our party was 12 and she was a champ through the whole hike. Her dad complained more! read more
