While we were targeting u-pick apples, many of the places were closed. Hale's is really an apple stand. They had apples, apple juice, and pumpkins. The people were very friendly, they had a good variety of apples, and the apples were delicious. It's also conveniently located with easy road access. It's harvest-time! What could be better than tasting specialty varieties of freshly picked apples in the countryside? While Dear Hubby and I were in Sonoma County for a quick trip, we had free time on Sunday to get out into the backroads and check out a few apple farms. Hale's is close to Santa Rosa, which made it convenient. They were decked out for Halloween, with various areas sporting giant spider figures, scarecrows, skeletons, and much more. Autumn décor, including pumpkins and apples were definitely part of the scene. Adjacent to their barn they had a station set up with very helpful staff offering samples of various varieties of apples. I loved that they had a number of the favorites I've experienced in SoCal's apple haven of Oak Glen (near Yucaipa). Yes, to Mutsu! Cameo! They also had others that I hadn't heard of, and already can't recall their names. Oh good, I found a chart online - Northern Spy is one I tried and bought. Sundance, maybe? Yikes! Hale's claims to grow 30 different varieties, and good for them. Good for you! An apple a day keeps the doctor away, as the old saying goes. No doctors for me for now - I'm enjoying usually one apple for breakfast and one for lunch. Hale's has kept me going for two weeks now. We especially enjoyed taking in their ambiance with my brother and sister-in-law, who live nearby, but hadn't been before. A great place to visit with family! We love their apples, which Mr. Hale drives down to our local Hayward Farmer's Market every Saturday from sometime in August until about Thanksgiving. Each week there's a selection of 4 - 6 varieties of apples that are ready that week. I don't know how he does it, but his apples are the tastiest, and because they're so fresh, they last a long time in the fridge. I heard some people eat their last Hale apples around March... ours just get eaten way sooner. Also every year for the last few years, I've been baking one giant apple pie using several of his apple varieties--it's become a bit of a tradition. Mr. Hale has a collection of photos of beautiful baked goods his customers have made with his apples. If any of my pies ever come out looking good, maybe I can send him a picture. Mr. Hale himself is well-named... pink-cheeked, hale and hearty, and who knows how old he is? (Okay, he's not exactly ancient, but I have a feeling he may be a little older than he looks.) We've visited his place in Sebastopol once while passing through, and there were a couple of very friendly young ladies manning the stand. We went a little late for all the festivities, but it's a beautiful area. I love this place. They have such a great variety of apples. Right now they have Gravenstein's and pink pearls. The pink pearls are an amazing apple that are pink on the inside and green on the outside. They have a nice tart crisp flavor. They make the best pies and people are always surprised because the pie filling is pink! They are only open for a few months out of the year. I was so afraid they weren't going to open up this year but finally found out they just opened. Yay. read more

Once upon a time, Sebastopol was filled with apple farms. Now there are but a few, but thankfully Hale's continues the tradition serving up more varieties of apples than I have found anywhere (but not all at once---check with them for seasonal offerings!) If you are interested in fresh, locally grown apples, there is no better way them to go straight to an orchard during harvest season. Support a family seem by buying and trying different cultivars of apples and seek which one you like the best for that season (every year is different, every apple is different). Have your own family fruit tasting! The staff is very friendly and they have apple cider and value added goodies. I love the "Seconds" bins where you can buy cosmetically imperfect fruit for a fraction of the price which is actually more healthy because insect pressure and stress increases the nutrition of what you're eating. A plants's stress responses initiates an increase in antioxidant compounds prior to harvest, the study shows. The "ugly fruit" are the perfect looking ones that are less healthy for those hungry microbes in your gut. Minus a star simply because I'd live to see a higher diversity of cultivars. read more

Absolutely love this farm! First, I have to give a huge shout-out to Yuli. She is incredibly kind, informative, and made our visit very pleasant! The stand itself is very charming and picturesque for those fall photos and autumn fun. Their family-run farm stand offers a veriety of delicious apples and beautiful pumpkins! I had initially thought that it was a u-pick apple farm, but it unfortunately isn't. That isn't to discourage anyone, but it was a funny experience - I promised family that it was and we tried to retrieve their buckets in the front for this - don't do this, haha. I ended up finding the most gorgeous red corn, a few small gourds, and little white pumpkins for decor. read more

Picked up Winesaps, Baldwins, Golden Delicious and Fujis today. All are exceptionally good. A tree- ripened Golden Delicious is a rarity and wonderful in pie! I was happy to find them here. (Supermarket Golden Delicious are usually awful.) The young women working the stand were knowledgeable about all the varieties which I appreciated. The were also knowledgeable about other varieties I inquired about and were able to educate me on availability. read more

I bought pink pearl apples from Dave at the Marin farmers market a few months ago and have been meaning to make it out here since then. I was told when I met Dave that if I ever buy a mealy apple it is because the farmer doesn't understand how to grow a proper apple. Good to know because between you and me I hate mealy apples. I tend to shy away from trying new ones in order to avoid the dreaded result. Thankfully at Halle's that is not a concern because you can sample all available apples for purchase. Everyone I tried was crisp and delicious! Some were slightly sweeter than others, but I loved each one I tried. I ended up with Primms, black beauty, and two others (bad yelper for not remembering now). This time of year is also a bounty of squash to pluck on site. There are all shapes and sizes of gourds and pumpkins to choose from. It was beautiful to see all the colors and mounds of squash between the hay stacks and fabulous fall leaves. Truly a perfect fall site. If you have munchkins and want to avoid the hubbub of farms like Petaluma this is a great quant little spot just off the highway. However once inside you are tucked away into a little farm world. Prices are decent at $3 pound for apples. For organic and farm fresh it is average and at least you know the farmer as opposed to whole foods. Pumpkins are priced by which bucket they fit into. I grabbed little ones at $2 an $3 each. Overall a fun place to kill some time on a fabulous fall day. read more

Beautiful apple farm. You cannot pick apples, sunflowers and other products yourself, but can purchase everything here at the farm or a farmers market in San Rafael civic center. They have a beautiful variety of pumpkins during fall season which are so lovely and colorful. Apples taste very delicious. The price is $3/pound and you can purchase 20/50/60 pounds as well. The drive to the farm Apple is lovely. The country side is so nice and secluded from the city. It's a definitely a worth the drive and the scenery is amazing. I stopped by here looking for pink lady apples. They had 10 lb, 20 lb and other sizes of boxes nicely displayed in the front with the prices shown as $25 for a 10 lb, etc. I pointed to one of the boxes and asked if it was the 10 lb box and the person working there said yes. So I said I will take it. I asked if they would bring it to my car, as I have injured my arm, and they were kind enough to do that. However, in the process, they took a bunch of apples off the top of the box!! I said how come, they said they weighed it and it was over 13 lb, and as is, I am getting over 12 lb for the price of 10 lb. To me, their actions were underhanded (bait and switch) and left me with a bitter taste. They did not say anything when I pointed to the box and asked if it was a 10 lb box, nor when I said I will take it. If you are going to put a sign up saying 10 lb box $25, and displaying a supposedly 10 lb box, and care enough about the weight, then make it a 10 lb box. But to take apples off after the customer has agreed to purchase the items does not seem right to me. I will not be going back. read more

Dave Hale is a real gentleman. He produces great apples. And he is a wealth of information on pruning, growing, and caring for our apple trees. We got some Scions from him earlier this year and he taught me how to graft them into our tree. It was an 80% success story and now we will have five varieties of apples on our two apple trees. We just stopped by to buy some fresh apples off his trees and had another delightful conversation with him. read more

Conveniently located, no-thrills stand supporting a farm that grows many interesting kinds of apples. The apples are fine - what's most interesting about this place is not the quality, but the number of varieties you'll find. And, they'll let you sample! I give this place 3 stars because: some staff are more helpful than others; I find their gourds and pumpkins sold in October to be cool, but very overpriced; the quality of the apples is nothing special; there are other, more interesting apple farms in town a bit further off the beaten path. If you have time to explore, look up other apple farms with more interesting, better apples. If you just want a sweet little stop along the highway, this place is good for that. read more

The apple selection here was good. They had about 6 varieties for sale today beautiful and also a pallet container seconds, so we got a big box for our apple dehydration project. You can look at the orchard, but it's not set up to visit. This October weekend they have a nice selection of pumpkins, squash, and gourds. Loved it. We got 10 pounds of apples for $2 pound! The gal said it was the 2nd to last weekend for apples. (they sell tomatoes in the summer which I bet are amazing) Lots of tastes to see which ones you like - but of course you mix and match and put them in a bag and I will never be able to tell which is which. They should make sell apple cider doughnuts!!! They sell their apples to the cider place down the street. The owners and staff were really helpful and knowledgeable- and we learned that if we had come in September we would have been able to try even more unusual and sought-after apple varieties- so we are putting it on our calendar now to visit in September AND October 2023!
