So impressed how beautiful all of our north shore community libraries are worth all the tax dollars we spend honestly. When coming in there is a circle area with a few parking spots. This visit saw Fall scarecrows in front and some garden flowers neatly trimmed with signage noting deGrootDesignsInc. Walking to the other side one sees impressively how big and long the building(s) are. Coming in at the Main (see pix) there are librarians at the book desk who pleasantly directed us to follow the others and the signs to the Centerport Garden Clubs 2023 Flower show within. (see review). Through and around we found it near the circle entrance we had parked at. Entering was a cute cubical display of Witch paraphernalia along with a book of course titled Son of a Witch, a welcoming teddy bear by the Friends little book shop and a sign of special thanks, listing the local merchants who support them. Displays at and on the stage entrance had smooth clean floors and well taped down wires near the steps. In one of the back rooms was a hospitality room with tables chairs and snacks for those to share or purchase. I met Kate a lovely and helpful member of the flower club who shared how much combined work and effort was involved in the set ups and displays. This is a true example of "Many hands make light work" and also maybe not so light work, to see the polished efforts of how everything in the library was so nice. P.S. this included the bathroom for Women (see pix) which was clean and pleasantly decorated. It is worth the visit.

The Children's Library…read moreis a standout --it's warm, inviting, and filled with resources to spark curiosity and learning. One of the highlights for us is their collection of Tonie boxes and individual Tonies available for borrowing. These are such a creative and engaging way for kids to enjoy stories and songs, and it's wonderful to have the opportunity to explore them before committing to buy on our own. The library also offers a great lineup of kids' programs that are perfect for little ones aged 2-5. From interactive read-along sessions to holiday-themed events, the programs are thoughtfully designed to keep young minds engaged while making learning fun. My 3 year old loves coming to this library and I look forward to taking her :)

They were able to secure me a room and even offered me a hot spot to use in my home that I could take out on my library card. I have always loved the library since I was a child!! The helpfulness and wonderful resources are exactly why my love for the library has grown with me. I encourage others to go and enjoy this wonderful resource. You won't be disappointed. They are incredible people who work there!

I grew up with the children's section and now as an adult love taking advantage of all the HPL has to offer. Tons of events are happening every month, check out the bulletin boards near the entrance for interesting and fun things, be sure to visit the basement as well. Might catch a book or art fair, maybe even a lecture depending on the day. Always clean, well organized and spacious, despite the open layout there's usually a quiet corner (within a large two floor setup) to retreat to if needed.

It all depends on the time of day and day of the week you are going. The staff is fantastic from my interactions with them. Always friendly and helpful. I have gone with my daughter for the mommy and me class. It is incredible. The kids all have a great time and it flies by. We don't stay afterwards, but there is a great area for young kids to hang out and read...or more likely be read to. It's a nice place and they are working on some construction there too, so I presume it will be even better. It also has a great classic look. I like it and they have tons of cool things going on.

This is a small library that has a good amount of resources and programs, such as free health…read morescreenings and referrals by Catholic Health Services, defensive driving courses, boater safety certification courses, computer skills classes and more. Check out their website, deerparklibrary.org and their Instagram page, #deerparklibrary, to see all what they have to offer. Today I took a defensive driving course here. It was taught by National Traffic Safety instructor, Thomas K, who was thorough and direct, and he encouraged class participation. Some students shared fascinating tales about their driving experiences. Today's class took place in the Dina A. Reilly Community Room, and it lasted six hours with a few 15 minute breaks and one half an hour lunch break. Thomas engaged the class with audio-visuals. For example, he put on a short film, featuring a family grieving about the death of their relative. He was a highway construction worker who was killed on the job by a driver who failed to obey a "slow down" sign. Course completion certificates will be mailed with an expected arrival date of six weeks. Point reductions and insurance discounts will be retroactive to today's date. Some students brewed beverages from the coffee and tea Keurig pods that were placed on the coffee table. Some of us helped ourselves to some Entenmann's milk chocolate chip cookies as well. Deer Park residency is not a pre-requisite for the class. Stop by the Registration Desk to register. The class costs $25, and one is held several times a year. The four star review is due to feedback from my classmates. Many found the class overcrowded and preferred that it be held in a larger room. Others found Thomas boring and think that he could have showed us more short films.

I know we had COVID , but .... really , it is time that this is over . It cannot be THAT much trouble for the staff to take care of this . Also , why no Friends of the Library ? Again , Deer Park sets themselves apart by refusing to have this very valuable resource . I believe that the head of the library does not want patrons to be involved in any decisions . This is a shame because there is so much more that can be done in this library .

Even though I'm not in that field anymore due to the physical nature of it, I felt that it was a very pleasant, inclusive class. Where my opinion of Suffolk sours dramatically is when I took an Electrical Assembly with an instructor David E. I am really new to soldering and I expected more professionalism. Instead, he complained that we students are giving him a headache. One time, I was taking a pen out and he came over and asked what I'm taking out of my bag. It was a pen. It was just very inappropriate. He would just make passive aggressive comments and it was very hard to work with him. I've never soldered before so of course I'm going to make mistakes. I need constructive feedback not sarcasm. Terrible instructor.

The children's section is lackluster. I'm originally from Town of Huntington, which had a robust…read morechildren's section. Smithtown Commack branch children's section is often cramped and noisy. They have a less robust selection of books to choose from compared to the Town of Huntington Commack Library. Many of the available toys are outdated/missing pieces. The summer reading program could be improved as well. The children aren't able to earn as frequently as they did in the past. Rather than having an opportunity to earn a large prize through raffle tickets at the end of an 8 week program, young children would benefit more from immediate reinforcement, such as a sticker to choose from after reading a certain number of books. Hoping improvements are made in the future. Will continue to use the Town of Huntington location to at least take out books until improvements are made.
