When we first arrived at Half Moon Bay Dog Park, we were a bit apprehensive. The pictures online made it look like a newer park, but in reality, it looked much older and more worn than we expected. Also, there was a sign on the fence that advised this was Smith Field Coastside Dog Park so we thought we might have been at the wrong location. Nevertheless, we could see some pups inside having fun so we decided to head in. As we were approaching the gate, a woman was leaving with a gorgeous labradoodle but as they got closer it appeared the dog was soaking wet. The pup came up for some friendly pets and muddy paw prints on my husbands pants confirmed it. When we looked inside, every dog seemed to be wet, which was strange as there had been no rain and all I could see was dry bark. However, this and the fact that it was all larger dogs at play and we have a smaller pup, added to our initial hesitation. We decided to take a chance, as we were already there, and our concerns quickly faded as we were greeted by the warm and friendly community of dog owners inside. Everyone was welcoming and we felt very comfortable and included. When I asked why most of the pups were wet, they advised there was a hose there and they enjoyed being sprayed with it. The park may not be much to look at, but the genuine friendliness and community spirit more than makes up for it. The large fenced area is filled with bark and there are picnic tables to sit at and for the dogs to use as springboards lol. There is also a little shack in case the wind gets to be too much. All the larger dogs were respectful of our older, smaller dog and once she entered, we found that there was a smaller dog inside after all who was prompted to come play upon seeing someone her own size. This park turned out to be one of our best traveling dog park experiences. If you're looking for a place where both you and your dog can make new friends, this is the spot for you. read more

Took my 10 month old American staffordshire bull terrier/American bulldog mix to this park- she looks like a pit-bull so you can only imagine the looks she and I get going to any dog park. However this dog park and people here did not once look at her funny or judge her! The environment and culture here is so welcoming and kind, I felt so comfortable here. They all gave pets and love to my dear Daisey, what more can a pet parent ask for! read more

Here during the eclipse - overcast and cold, as I expected. A nice little park with a comfy hut to hide from the cold. Nice people and dogs. There's a nice view of the town and the hills but you can't see the ocean from here. No separate small dog area. This is a very handy place to know if you're traveling up or down Highway 1 with your dog. It's only a minute off the freeway and a convenient place for your friend to stretch the legs out and do what they need to. read more

Messed up older, dog walker woman with a visor who drives an orange Honda Element who talks in a whiny, unauthoritive voice has been there the last two times I've gone. Two of her "charges" has threatened to attack me (snarling, backing me into a corner, chasing me down without warning). One was a black lab named Skippy (?) and today a whitish, blue healer with a cropped tail and a human name like Louie, or something. The dog walker kept telling the healer to "be nice" which usually means the dog has not been "nice" in the past. Because it is apparently her job? there is no safe time to go without her there. Therefore ignore all the good parts in my initial review (below). In my 51 dog parks I have never left instantly due to my safety being at risk. What is scariest is that people appear to hire her to SOLIDIFY bad behavior in their dog. This is a major wow moment for me. ~10,000+ hours in dog parks has NEVER yielded this. The woman does nothing but talk AT the dogs (of course they don't listen) and only restrained the black lab after 3 attempted attacks on me and 3 times demanding her to restrain the dog. She restrained the dog for 2 minutes then released it again to do it all over again. If you must go: Don't ever go in if that orange Honda Element is there and prepare to exit out side gate if she comes after you. You will have to repeat directives several times in order for her to restrain a given dog but it will likely only be for a couple minutes. Leave instantly if anything out of the ordinary happens like when I threw a ball for my dog and her whitish healer lunged at me. Or go onto the side yard by yourself which is fenced in. Narrow, no water there, no tennis balls but you won't get bit. Worst dog park day ever. And coming from me? THAT is saying something. ....... Smith Field Coastside Dog Park aka Half Moon Bay Dog Park. Excellent experience at this hidden gem of a dog park. It has one "all dog" enclosure (it is not separated into separate sections). We went one time on a Friday evening at 5pm in the month of August. We were driving through, found it, loved it, will go back. To get there: turn on Wavecrest Rd. at the "British Pub and B&B" (with the double decker bus) and go down the lane to the clear signs, then turn right. This dog park appears to be created and taken care of by a group of people and not a city or county. This makes it a better experience, IMO -- not a "I will call and complain and someone else will do it". I love the fact that the wood chips take almost no upkeep and makes the place smell nice. Wood chips tend to wash out better than fake turf and not stink. Grass takes upkeep which does not happen on a volunteer basis so to make it work wood chips is usually the way to go. Our first dog park was an all volunteer dog park (including rent cost) so I am familiar with this kind. Very friendly people, friendly dogs of all sizes (and lots of them), picnic tables, lots of tennis balls, a killer 6 foot fence (dogs are not getting out), double gate system, high end, stainless steel water buckets with fresh water in them. It has what, I guess, is a "time out" crate that a dog can go to to chill but no one needed it. It has a dog run on the side for dogs who do not necessarily belong in with other dogs but still love to run the fence. My dog did not partake in the fence running with one dog in it but had no problem with it. Wishes? Having been to some 40 dog parks I do have a few of those: That the great picnic tables were spread out a bit more maybe with one on the far side to break it up a bit, that the cute little house is in the corner so my dog can't go behind it where I can't see and have to follow to watch him (which I do, but others may not). Less of the wood chips (it is around 2 ft high) due to it being able to compost, and also not being able to take advantage of a rare 6 ft fence. That people would throw away the broken tennis balls so dogs don't chew on them. If you want a manicured, grassy experience maybe this is not the place for you. If you want a clean, community experience where dogs have a blast together? This is the place for you. This is our 38th dog park in two years. I have no hesitation giving it 5 stars and will definitely go back. read more

We went there on a Saturday afternoon and it was completely dead. It smelled like manure and the area was kinda sketch. Maybe if there were dogs, it would be nice but honestly it looked like a ghost town and there were huge piles of mulch. Super small too. read more

The Half Moon Bay Dog Park is located off Wavecrest Avenue by Smith Field. It's a wonderful place to take your dog for playing, exercising and socialization (for people and dogs alike!). The park was renovated this past year and great improvements were made including new decking, fencing and running water. Scoops and biodegradable pick-up bags are available so the park is Eco-friendly. It has a ample seating on the deck and around picnic tables. There is also a shed for two-legged visitors during windy or damp weather. The park was established by volunteers over 10 years ago. It has a friendly atmosphere and is a great place to meet other like-minded dog lovers who genuinely appreciate the opportunity to socialize and exercise their dogs in an off-leash area. read more

I can't believe there's no review for the HMB Dog Park! This park is great for more reasons than one. First off, I love the fact that it's so community-based. It makes a park more special when you know it is there 100% due to the love of the people in the community. This park is supported ENTIRELY by private donations and knowing this, it's quite impressive to see how nice it is. It's located right next to the Smith Field Little League Field. Look for Cameron's Restaurant off of 1, then turn onto Wavecrest road and drive down towards the end. Turn right just after the break in the trees and just before you get to the field. The park is all the way in back. I've only been 2-3 times but I've always encountered friendly and responsible dog owners here. That's such a huge relief. The park is really very well maintained. The most charming part is the little house/shed and deck. I came here once on a rainy day and was able to take shelter in the house while my dog ran around. There are ads and bulletins posted inside with information on dog walkers and dog sitters and a bit of information on the park itself. There are nice Adirondack chairs out on the deck for folks to sit and watch their dogs play in addition to a couple picnic benches. The ground is wood chips which I hear come from the golf course. The layer of eucalyptus is so thick it's almost like walking in sand. But it's nicely scented! There are tennis balls and old dog toys strewn all around. Website says to bring your own water, but the last couple times I've gone there have been buckets of water that are filled from a big tank in the back of the park. There are also pooper-scoopers if you forget to bring your own baggies. I'm so happy for this dog park and would highly urge you to donate since it's such a good cause. While basically being a community owned dog park which needs donations for upkeep. This place is great, and has lots of friendly dogs and people. While its not my favorite because of the wood chips and dust the dogs can roll around and get really dirty, which is bad for my car and house.... but they are dogs, and its better than mud! People are always friendly and there is a nice crowd of dogs! It is a little hidden, but I just use Camerons Pub's big Pumpkin to know which street to turn on, and then you simply go all the way to the end and will see the park. I live 5 min from this dog park, and am very thankful we have this place to get the energy out of our dogs (is that possible?? mines never tired!) And I hope to make donations when financially possible to help out! read more

Great dog park. it was huge! It's a great place to really test your dog's recall in a controlled area. I would suggest that you bring a bowl of water since the only water available is right in front of the gated area (not inside of it). I went on a weekend and although there were a lot of people, it never felt overwhelming or crowded. There is grassy areas flanking the side of the park but it's mostly gravely. Since this place is huge, people aren't as diligent about picking up poop so be careful when you get into the longer grass areas! read more

I thought this dog park was so cute! It is a pretty decent grassed area in Smith Field where there is a separate small run area for small dogs. There are also people playing horseshoes nearby which was cool. There is a cute little shed with information posted and a lawn chair. This shed has a little patio with a bunch of lawn chairs with a few regulars sitting in them which were extremely friendly. There are Paul's of water along the fence for dogs and a bucket amount of tennis balls. There are plenty of poop scoopers and poop baggies for everyone. Hidden gem of a dog park that not many people are aware of in HMB. Thanks to Yelp, I was exposed to HMB dog park, probably 1 of the better dog parks in the bay area. Huge selection of toys right in the heart of the park. Cute little cabin for owners and doggies to chill in for those who don't enjoy sun or rain. Last thing I really adore about this park is the plethora of dog caretakers that come here and bring their whole crew. Most are very nice and knowledgable. ONLY downfall of this park is it's size but it's most definitely tolerable. read more

I had such a good first experiences here today. I brought my year old pit bull to play here and he had such a good time. I talked to all the other dog owners and met their dogs. All the dogs were so well behaved and the people were very friendly. It is so nice to have something like this here in HMB. We will be going back for sure. read more

Nice folks, usually well-behaved canines. It's a very small rectangular area, the smallest dog park I've ever been to. You get really really dirty as its all wood shavings, mostly from eucalyptus so it is very dusty. Still, it gets the job done and we are lucky to have it. Lots of donated toys and even a little cabin to huddle in when it's too windy or damp. Scoops, rakes and trash cans provided so it means that no plastic goes into the landfill which is great. read more

Really enjoyed this dog park... While here I learned that it was created through a fundraiser held by locals and maintained by locals as well. It is the nicest dog park I've ever seen. In the short time I was there all the dogs and owners that came through were really friendly. There are plenty of toys for dogs to play with if you've forgotten yours at home. The only vice is that the park is made of tan bark and when the dogs play the dirt gets into the air, but that is a very small price to pay. read more

Yes. This dog park was created and is actively supported and maintained by locals. Recently revamped with all new fencing, decking around the little shed, a nice, new entry and walkway, a newly installed water source and a completely renovated ground surface!! Way to go volunteers! Also, "thank-you" to the City of HMB for their amazing work in the renovation and their ongoing help. The surface is tree shavings and yes, it is a bit dusty at times but a good brushing when we get home and my dog is good-to-go inside the house. At times it can get a bit crowded but there are plenty of times that we visit and are the only ones there, or maybe one other dog. I live on the coast and feel lucky to have this great, safe place to take my dog for exercise and socialization plus, it's always nice to met up with friends I've made at the park over the years. When we arrive at the park I always see a lot of tail wagging from my dog :-) read more

I am new here. I brought my dog to the dog park. I recently adopted her and needs socializing. When I got to the dog park it was around 9-9:30 am during the week. When I found it I was surprised at the amount of dogs already there. I counted 24!! And only 2 women looking after them. When I got to the gate I was rushed by many dogs both large & small. Some dogs seemed curious and others seemed aggressive. It was so bad I could not enter. The 2 vehicles parked were from Marley & Me and Half Moon Bay dogs. I decided to go back another day only to find out it was the same situation. The sign on the fence said there is a 4 dog limit. Clearly not enforced. These women have completely taken over the park for their business. I don't think it's fair. Owners should know their beloved pup is shoved in over crowded suv's only to be brought to a dog park!! I thought dog walking meant actually walking & hiking. Not cool at all. I ran into a few other dog owners that had the same experience. I know I'm new around here but that doesn't mean I'm not allowed to bring my dog at the park. Who enforces rules around here? Why are these women in such control? read more
