When we first arrived at Half Moon Bay Dog Park, we were a bit apprehensive. The pictures online…read moremade it look like a newer park, but in reality, it looked much older and more worn than we expected. Also, there was a sign on the fence that advised this was Smith Field Coastside Dog Park so we thought we might have been at the wrong location. Nevertheless, we could see some pups inside having fun so we decided to head in. As we were approaching the gate, a woman was leaving with a gorgeous labradoodle but as they got closer it appeared the dog was soaking wet. The pup came up for some friendly pets and muddy paw prints on my husbands pants confirmed it. When we looked inside, every dog seemed to be wet, which was strange as there had been no rain and all I could see was dry bark. However, this and the fact that it was all larger dogs at play and we have a smaller pup, added to our initial hesitation. We decided to take a chance, as we were already there, and our concerns quickly faded as we were greeted by the warm and friendly community of dog owners inside. Everyone was welcoming and we felt very comfortable and included. When I asked why most of the pups were wet, they advised there was a hose there and they enjoyed being sprayed with it. The park may not be much to look at, but the genuine friendliness and community spirit more than makes up for it. The large fenced area is filled with bark and there are picnic tables to sit at and for the dogs to use as springboards lol. There is also a little shack in case the wind gets to be too much. All the larger dogs were respectful of our older, smaller dog and once she entered, we found that there was a smaller dog inside after all who was prompted to come play upon seeing someone her own size. This park turned out to be one of our best traveling dog park experiences. If you're looking for a place where both you and your dog can make new friends, this is the spot for you.

Ambience: This park is workable but without grass it's a little less than ideal. But It's got a cool geometric shape like a rhombus. but what does this nonstandard shape do in the dog park's vortex ? You don't have to be a shaman to know that this shape introduces areas of stagnant chi. much like wolves and dingoes, Shiba Inu dogs can be frazzled by oddities a Dog Park's "FANG shui" (see what i did there?)

You can also leash up your pooch and go for a walk along with bay trail that is right next to the park. Cool wind sculptures on the top of the hill. There's also some overgrown Weeds onto one side of the field, so I'm sure there is bunnies or groundhog that live in there cause my dogs are always always sniffing around! Lol There is a small dog park and a little dog park along with a dog fountain and hose out in front. There's also a bathroom for women nearby. There's also a really nice trail and some cool art sculptures and interactive art pieces at the top of the hill if you walk all the way up. This particular day my dogs were tired and didn't want to walk all the way up so we just walked around the park for 30 minutes and got to play with dogs And then we left.

Also, there is so much space for your dog to run around! The only con is that it's quite hilly and can get muddy after rain. I was also concerned because there is no division for small and large dogs and my dogs are small. I came on a Sunday around 1pm and it was not crowded at all and I easily found parking on the street. I have to say, the park is beautiful. There are a few picnic tables but be warned, if it is a hot day there is no shade at the tables. That being said, there is plenty of shade in other areas just no where to sit if you need to. There is a water fountain for the dogs and trash cans at the entrance. Thank goodness! No having to put used poo bags in the car for the ride home. It is great to walk around the park but keep in mind it is on a hill. I can also imagine this place gets very muddy in the winter. We found all the people there to be friendly as well as the dogs. Most of the dogs there that day were big dogs but my dogs did manage to find some that would play with them.

The trees form a large covered pathway reminiscent of the arches of a large cathedral. We were there in late summer, on a day when the fog was hugging the shore and creating an eerie atmosphere... it made for a beautiful atmosphere so typical of this shore. Parking wasn't an issue as we were there on a Saturday morning. I imagine this gets busier later in the day.... looks like it might be a very popular spot for picnics. The pathways are well maintained, and you get great access to this unique ecosystem. Make sure you hike to the top of the cliff and walk into the "cypress tree tunnels" to see what I'm talking about... it's a beautiful place.

As with most Bay Area parks, it has a separate area for children 2-5, which I have seen mostly people with babies use because that area is really contained. Also, since the park isn't very big, the area for children over 5 isn't intimidating to smaller children. This is because unlike larger parks, big kids aren't unknowingly running over the little kids while they are playing. This is a good thing if you are trying to keep track of a small child. The structures are so cute. There is a lighthouse and boat, a dolphin decorated slide, a shark, and toward the back of the structure are two walls for climbing - one with a monster on it and the other - well, it is a bit hard to identify (!?!?). It looks like Pinnochio maybe, but that is a little random. It could be just a dancing boy wearing shorts with suspenders and a feather in his cap - which, is still random, hahaha. Anyway, the walls are fun and my daughter climbs right up them and then swings to a rope and pulls herself up onto the structure that way. Man, I wish I could do what she does! There is a small basketball court as well, so I bring my daughter's bike and she takes turns riding her bike all around the black top and then going on the structures and then back to biking. It's great. We are so lucky to have Moss Beach Park nearby!

I wanted to share some photos of the surface right after it rained, see attached. Despite the wet grounds, no mud, and we've been on this surface before when it's completely dry and the amount of dust created is extremely minimal to none -- both scenarios, a deep contrast to our dog park. This is the only surface (other than grass, astroturf or wood chips) that should ever be used for a dog park. I realize this is water under the bridge now, but boy do I wish our Parks Dept did a bit more research into ground cover for our park before putting in the current way-too-dusty, way-too-muddy-post-rain surface. Dog owners, occupants of the Art Center, and neighbors alike would have had, at the very least, one less thing to complain about -- and a lot more to be happy about. Alas.
