Half price books seem to vary quite a bit, this one is much better than the last two I've visited. Big, bright, with a wide variety of books. Also a good selection of CDs and DVDs. Helpful, efficient staff, in a strip mall across from Mandarin House and some other good restaurants nearby. Easy parking in front. read more

First time coming to this location since it's a lot closer to me. It's not as big as the Schaumburg location but the customer service is a lot better. If you're selling items, they get through it very fast. I didn't even have time to look through some of the movies, since they quickly got through the other people's orders. After I took my ticket to the register, all of the cashiers were extremely nice. Parking can be busy because it's a shared lot. They have books, comic books, movies, music, video games, etc that are used or new. You'd be surprised at how much the new items cost. read more

You can really find a lot of great deals at half price books. A very good selection of preowned vinyl, books, video games, movies, and manga. It's definitely worth the visit because you'll have no trouble finding something that you've always wanted being sold at a great price. read more

I have been to several HPB's and I think this is one of the smaller ones, compared some of our other local choices. They definitely do not have as much music as other locations and some of the other book topic areas are smaller. Like any HPB facility, it is hit or miss, but I seem to "miss" on this location. read more

Avoid the Downers Grove location. On December 17, 2022, I brought THREE boxes of books, the majority of which were paperbacks (they love paperbacks because they're easier to sell). The books I brought to them were in EXCELLENT condition. I was offered a paltry amount. One could spend more for two people at Chipotle. Upon hearing their unjust offer, I laughed and refused. I packed my books and returned to them my car. The staff barely said a word to me and in fact the majority of the employees do not look at you, smile at you, or otherwise say a word to anyone. HPB hires anyone who has a pulse, and they skip training on basic customer service. read more

Doug(?) and I had a nice, long chat about the West Coast while he sorted through the boxes of books we'd brought in. It took over 20 minutes for him and later fellow staff member Adrian to get through our 15+ very heavy, very stuffed boxes when lovely Doug went for his lunch break. In the end, the mountain of books yielded an offered sum of $50. While glad to get rid of all the books in one fell swoop with minimal effort, I do find myself wondering if going elsewhere or bringing in a box or two at a time as opposed to an entire library's worth of them would offer better returns. I normally visit the other locations in Countryside & Orland Park but wanted to see if this one was any better. To me, it's quite the opposite. Their prices are more than the other locations. As usual upon entering, the staff rarely speaks or just don't all together, the latter for here. I noticed albums that I purchased at other locations were way more. The 45 vinyl singles ranged from $.25 to $10, other locations the singles are all $.50. Maybe their rent is more here. Selection definitely isn't any better. I feel corporate teaches the workers to be bias and rude until u check out, that's when they know they are getting your $$$. Not sure why I continue to patronize a nationwide rude company but their prices are better than Barnes & Nobles. Just not their service. read more

Your usual HPB but this one has really communicative staff. I remembered seeing a DVD I really wanted but took a pass on it. A while later, they were having a sale and I called over to see if the DVD was still there. Thankfully, it was, and they held it for me without any trouble. Much appreciated! read more

I will never spend another cent at this bookstore. When attempting to make a purchase, the person at the register denied renewal of my educator discount card. I offered my Drivers License and a school business card. I offered to show my work email. I offered to open the School website to confirm I was an employee. Denied. I was humiliated as the implication was that I was some sort of criminal posing as a teacher to take advantage of a discount. I left without buying anything. I called and spoke to an assistant manager who perpetuated the same ridiculous stance, calling it store policy. To add insult to injury, in a bubbly voice, the store manager explained how anyone could go to a school and obtain a teacher business card with their name on it. These people suck. read more

It's a Half Price Books. If you've been to any other one, you've pretty much been here. Yes, the prices they offer when you're selling books are insulting - the key to being happy at a Half Price Books is never to sell them any books. (If you itemize, you'll do better donating them to a thrift store and getting a receipt. You might do better holding a garage sale, though you'd still have to donate the remains someplace.) Books are well organized; the cookbooks section has a vegetarian section; etc. Like most HPB's, the most interesting part of the store is the sale section in the back, which will have some crazy deals, some of which might be on a book you're interested in. Or not. If you walk in thinking "I need a book on beading" or "I'm leaving for London tomorrow and need a guidebook," they'll have what you need at a reasonable-ish price. If you want rock bottom prices and infinite selection, you shouldn't be walking into a bookstore. read more

Let me start off by saying that I've never had an issue with any of the staff members at this location. Everyone is always friendly and willing to help. That being said, Half Price Books really nickels and dimes you on trade-ins. We came into the store with an entire laundry basket full of music, movies, and books. Immediately, we were notified that the wait would be thirty minutes and you could NOT leave the store during this time. Ok...it's a little odd seeing that stores with similar concepts like Disc Replay or 2nd and Charles will process orders in the same amount of time and you can leave. Oh well, whatever it's just an outdated policy I presume. After waiting for half an hour, we got offered $15 for the entire basket. The difference here with Half Price Books, is that they take EVERYTHING. Stores like Disc Replay and 2nd and Charles will return any overstock to you that they can not sell. Half Price Books? Oh good ole Half Price...what would we do without you? Half Price is the best thing to happen to me since Boarders went out of business. I didn't realize how terribly overpriced that place was until I met this lovely apple. Half Price has a great selection of already read books at an amazing price. They have a large amount of clearance books that are all under 3 dollars. They also have movies and CDs. Basically everything here is just awesome. The only thing about this location is that they put the CDs right in front of the door and since its been a busy week with them opening, it gets really awkward to navigate around the people looking at the CDs. Also, the DVDs and Blu Rays are right next to the line to check out. Also weird placement since its been busy. Otherwise, a solid Half Price. Love this place. It's magical. read more

So I come in here all the time since I work nearby and they always have something interesting and unique. And they always have something for anybody. They sell new and used and they sell anything from comics and anime to dvds and viynals and coloring books and anything you can think of. They even sell collectable figures. Now the only reason I gave it one less star was because-at least in my experience-when I sell my books and such here I don't get a lot of money. Now don't get me wrong I understand places won't give you a ton of money cause of certain factors but its just too low here in my opinion. All five of us get really excited when we have books to drop off because it probably means we'll get 5 more. We live this place. Stores like this make me miss my good old college days when I would spend most of my time studying at Borders (I miss Borders). This place is kinda neat. I prefer a good book over the digital Nook or tablet. I have one but there's nothing like the smell and a paper cut like a good book in your hand. Plus if you lose a book, you won't kick yourself for it. If you lose your Nook or tablet, well...that just sucks. If you think about it, this is a resale shop for books. And I don't mind it at all. The prices for these used books are decent. At least they're not full priced. They also sell CDs, video games, some collectable toys. They had the book I was looking for and for a rather good price. They were selling it for 7 bucks in comparison to Barnes and Noble where they were selling it for 12.99. Yeah, I don't mind the gently used book. Also, you can sell your books and other things to this store. I wouldn't know how much you would get for it but if you're looking to purge your bookshelves, bring it here. Nice little bookstore. I think I'm being kind here, as this place is a mix of olden days nostalgia and sadness packed into a locale that's bound for a closed for business sign in a matter of months. First, I love, love, love books, and read traditionally - in other words, sans technology. 8+ years of higher education mingling with a sea of required book buying and reading, I have to give them kudos for keeping what some think a lost art, alive. At Half Price Books, they barely touch the surface of tempting titles with too many tomes that belong at the dollar store or are obsolete as far as the info they contain. There's a lot of junk and silliness to confuse a buyer looking for serious reads, that I wouldn't suggest this place for a copy of Proust, psychology or pumpkin carving. However, I give them a high 5 for keeping reading books alive and kicking on a stores shelves. read more

This place has a great selection of everything from books, comics, vinyl, video and board games, CDs, and other nic-nacs. For being a resale shop I did find some good prices on things and also overpriced items I would be crazy to buy at that price. They do accept all of your trade-ins which is great if you are cleaning house, but they give you low offers. ( I understand they need to make their $ also). Overall a clean and well organized store worth checking out if you're looking to save some money. read more

This is a review of the vinyl record selection at this location only. I've been to this one a good number of times since it opened a couple years back, as I work in the area. Compared to other HPBs in the area, this one is okay. Prices tend to be a bit high, especially when compared to the Bloomingdale and Countryside stores, but are more reasonable than the Naperville location tends to be. The clearance section can be a good place to find good quality records for cheap, especially if you like classical or crooner-era music. read more

Terrible customer service when I tried to return an item from both the cashier and manager on duty. They claimed my item was not on the original receipt in which it was. They say the cashier did not ring up the item on the original purchase correctly. Why is it my fault the cashier did not ring it up right? I was going to look around after performing the store credit return but it made me feel sick to my stomach so I just left. read more

Worst Half Price Books experience ever!!! I have been buying and trading things in for the better part of 10 years at multiple Half Price Books locations in the Chicagoland area. Today I asked on the phone if this store has any restrictions on trading things in because although I've bought many many times from this store, I have never traded. I was told no and I drove almost a hour from hour for the sale they were having and when I got there I was told I couldn't trade things in or even get an estimate because I'm under 18. They wouldn't even except with a parent on the phone. Most frustrating and quite possibly my only bad Half Price Books experience. If you're thinking about going here, try Dosc Replay to the right of Best Buy in the same plaza first. A lot more negotiable on prices and much friendlier staff. For other HPB stores, I recommend Countryside and Orland Park. read more

In this review, I will discuss both the buying and selling experience at Half Price Books. If you are searching for a place that will offer cash for your used books, Half Price is the place to go. I brought in four bags of books. They accepted all my books and gave me cash. As expected, I did not get much cash for my trade-ins (outdated textbooks). But I'm happy they accepted everything and I got a few extra bucks. The store was organized and had a diverse selection of books. My favorite section was the Nostalgia/Antique books. It contained about three bookcases of old religious books, vintage novels, and other oddities. All the subject areas were well-stocked and contained very interesting collections and complete works volumes. They had a huge selection of mystery novels and a decent horror section, most notably. Half Price has more than just books. The music area, featuring vinyl and compact discs, was sizable. The genres were all clearly marked, and they had some very nice boxed sets. In the back of the store, they have various magazines. To the far right, they have a huge board game section, video games, and movies. I even found some very cool and unusual t-shirts. The shirts featured the artwork from book covers. In particular, they had a lot of H.P. Lovecraft themed shirts. I will definitely revisit Half Price Books to buy and sell! read more

I was so excited to see a book store that was open until 10:00 pm as I work Monday through Saturday from 8 am until 9 pm. I went on the website to order a few books that I could pick up after work since I wouldn't have long after work to stop and peruse. After selecting $50 worth of books, and proceeding to check out, I see no option for in store pick up! I called the Downers Grove location and was informed that if I wanted to pick up books the only way to place the order is to call in each title and hope that "my" store has it in stock, otherwise I have to pay for shipping and wait times. The world being what it is today, you'd think a book store would try to be as easily accessible as everything else is on the internet! So disappointed. If I can chose a "specific store" with the "find a store" locator, I should be able to AT LEAST peruse that specific store's inventory so I am not finding books I want, that I have no idea what store they are in, and then calling and finding out I can't get the books I already decided I wanted! SO DISSAPOINTED! read more

So unbelievably overpriced for used books. I compared the price of two books I was looking at to the same books on amazon and amazon was cheaper by a lot for brand new hardcovers. Also tried to sell 10 hardcover books in perfect condition and was offered $4.32, stating that was a "fair price." I don't think so and will never go back to purchase or sell. read more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! They had two copies of the same movie in their store, listed at two different prices. The exact same movie. I was told by the manager that this is based on how long they have had it in their inventory? That is absurd. How can you sell the same movie for two different prices?
