To be fair, the Half Shell doesn't have much competition in Troy, and it's naturally harder to find better seafood so far inland, but the Half Shell still leaves much to be desired. One of the best little places to eat in Troy. It's great for groups, and has a nice long bar if you just want to sit. Seating can sometimes be hard to find at lunchtime, but there's usually always somewhere to sit -- they used to have an entire other side of the restaurant that was just devoted to the smoking area, but since Troy has since banned smoking inside restaurants, it's now just regular seating. Half Shell is the local seafood restaurant and the only Oyster Bar in Troy. I lived in Troy for few years. I and my ex went to there for so many times I even couldn't remember. The cutest thing about Half Shell was over thousands one dollar bills. People liked to write their names and some special words on the dollar bills. I believe some of mine are still there. I did like the raw oysters, and my ex liked fried oysters. He said it tasted like some Taiwanese snack, only it had no basil. And I did like their Steamed Scallop Platter. But sometimes, the scallop were smaller than I expected. So if there is a chance I will go to Troy for some reason, I will stop by Half Shell. And it will remind me some old good times. read more

First off, we were told a 20 min wait and it ended up being more like 35 mins. Half of the table had to wait for silverware to be washed. We had a party of ten and we got our food at different times. I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not a seafood guy, and the "land lovers" menu was slim but everything I ate was good. My gravy burger was awesome and the onion rings were great. NO OYSTERS OR STEAMED VEGETABLES!!!!!!!!! Worst "seafood" experience in years. Went to have oysters with my wife, son and my brother and his wife. They were out of OYSTERS!!! Asked for an alternative dish with steamed vegetables, they were out of Steamed Vegetables as well. It was early evening, a Saturday night. Should have walked out then, but tried their "steamed" crab. It arrived over cooked, drowned in butter, with so much paprika shoveled on top it was inedible. The cole slaw was nothing more than common mayo and onion stirred into cabbage. Tasted like a$$. Should have told the waiter to disregard our menus, worthless documents anyway, just bring us whatever you think we should waste our money on. The disappointment would still be there along with our upset stomach, but we could have been out of there a lot s Don't waste your money like we did. Food was average except for the "special" onion rings. They were burnt. I notified a passing server (ours was missing in action). Next thing I knew, I was told a new batch was on the way. I had the seafood sampler, which was cooked and tasted good, however if it had been a hamburger I would have asked, " where's the beef?!?" Not really a lot of food for the price! As a New England seafood snob, I can say that this place is a great little seafood find. We met up with friends we haven't seen in a long time and it was a lovely time. The waiter was attentive and quick and really thorough with our order. The fried pickles -- which I'd never had -- were amazing! And the steamed blue crab claws were a mouth watering treat. My fiance had the grilled lemon pepper shrimp and I had the grilled white fish. Both were succulent and fresh and very delicious. My fish was so big that I couldn't eat it all. The baked potato was fluffy and seemed just baked...not like it had been sitting around forever getting gummy and gooey. Well when we first walked in we were not greeted at all. It was very apparent that they were understaffed but we were being gracious. But, when other customers started coming in after and getting their food before us, that's when we started to become agitated. We went to Troy, Al., to visit our daughter for Easter weekend, 2018. She attends Troy University, and works here, as a waitress. We are from Gulf Shores, Al., and we know Fresh Gulf Seafood. Half Shell Oyster House, did not disappoint. We had a big lunch, so we weren't to hungry. We decided on the Onion rings as an appetizer; and two plates to share: The Peel and Eat Shrimp and The Grilled Mahi Mahi Sandwich. All 3 items, were a hit! The Mahi Sandwich was one, if not the very best I've had. The Sourdough bread wasn't average, it was fantastic, a good size portion of the grilled fish, the remoulade sauce (made in house) is the very best, I've ever had. N.J! Our daughter was our server, and she took great care of us, she had a table of 9, and 3 four tops,+ us.
