They sell plants and flowers, but I didn't pay attention to that aspect of their operations. Cold Spring sells some of their own produce, products from other CT Farms and/or Orchards, Cold Spring branded products such as salsa, and other area products such as bread from a local bakery. I bought green cabbage, peaches, celery and salsa. Everything seemed appropriate quality for seasonal CT produce. The produce I didn't buy also looked good and represented what's in season pretty well. I will definitely go back for in season produce since I live in the area. This is an observation as opposed to a criticism. The reason I'm giving Cold Brook 4 Stars rather than 5 Stars relates to the extent of their offerings compared to another Farm Stand I frequently visit that's a bit farther away. That Farm Stand has a wide range of partnerships with high end CT businesses and they have things like high quality bagels, cheeses, pies, cupcakes, ice cream sandwiches, etc. That Farm Stand also has a wider range of canned goods, meats, and dairy products etc. I would travel farther to a Farm Stand like that because there are more products that interest me. Cold Spring will be the place I go for convenience when I want in season produce for a few days.

As they price individually and in sets, you may end up bringing home more plants than planned, but this is a good spot to get it all started. We now have a glorious set of tomatoes in progress, and now a couple extra tomato planters. The double decker wagons all over also help you take home more. The little farm store, extra colorful with its murals, has honey, maple syrup, salsa, and maybe more on down the season. It's neat to see start and end of season at the checkout, and the staff was kind. Thankfully there is extra parking is on both sides of the farm store, in case you're driving East, just look out for wagon traffic on your way through each greenhouse.

The other staff member came over so that the three of us where all about 5 feet apart. The original staff member explained that I was looking for a plant and the new staff member did not acknowledge me and told the other staff member that the plants were sold out and "she should've planted those plants in the ground already; they won't even take now" in a scolding tone (yes, she was aware it was me looking to buy). She was offensive, she wouldn't look at me or speak to me - the paying customer, and I stood there mouth agape. She didn't care or notice because she never looked at me, of course, and just walked off. After a moment of processing the intense dismissive snobbery, I walked away from the rest of my cart and left. (Please note: I work two jobs and managed to buy the plant elsewhere and had a wonderful harvest despite the timing not being ideal. - Also, I heard later that the rude staff member was related to the owners, but cannot verify). Another time before the one above, I had gone to grab some plants and asked the staff member at checkout about a specific type of bush. She had no idea and wanted to radio in to someone else working that section. It was taking him a bit to respond, so while waiting, I said, "no worries, I'll come back another time, I don't have the time now." She ignored me and kept radio-ing, I said, "really, now is not good. No need to call him." And she continued to ignore me and call on the radio - while not ringing me up. In the end I said, "you know what, I don't need any of these items" and she finally faced me saying "Oh, are you sure? Ok. Have a great day." Just - what?!?! Most staff do not know about the plants or care, they just work there, so a heads up if you're looking for that highly knowledgable service. Driving in/out and parking is a nightmare unless it is empty. Scratching your car to fit two cars on the road is almost inevitable. The energy here is all weird. They are always frantic on the radios as if they are all always annoyed at each other or annoyed to have to do their job, the majority of staff members I have met don't respect their customers (they seem to avoid them), and it is a very cramped shopping experience. While yes, this place is overpriced, I'm happy to pay a little extra for a local business and not a big box store. That said, this isn't a little extra and they don't treat their customers well at all. We all arrive at garden centers smiling and excited for the warmer weather, it is odd to have such poor treatment when the buy in is there from the start. That points to leadership, but who knows. No longer a place I frequent or recommend, but still might go in a pinch with very low expectations.

It was my first visit, and I was amazed at the thousands of varieties of stunningly colorful annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, and more. Rows and Rows of beautiful flowers everywhere. We ended up buying four flats of pretty pink and purple perennials @ $2.95/flat. The Raspberry Parfait Dianthus will really beautify our mailbox. They also have a store with all sorts of home decor and furnishings. Note that Coward Farms is open during the year in three distinct time periods - Spring from May 1st - July 3rd, Fall from Sept. 1st - Oct. 31st and Christmas -starting the Friday after Thanksgiving.
