Fitness FX - 4x Mr Olympia visiting Fitness Fx... No big deal

If only for the fact that I am an average, skinny, 5'10 male. And a lot of the guys who go to this gym are professional body builder's! Its great to walk up to them lifting eighty pounds or more with one arm and I'm there with my nice and light fifteen or twenty pounds. I try to stare them down but they simply laugh at me. This gym boasts "a full stock of dumbbells ranging from 3 all the way up to 160 lbs." This is very true. I never find myself waiting for a dumbbell set because someone is using it. They have enough for everyone. And they are improving! they have added what they call a "cardio theatre." In other words, they have more cardio equipment. There is an open space concept which has its advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantage is that everyone can see you while you are working out. But in my opinion, just get some confidence and remind yourself that no matter what body type you are, you rock! Then rock it out! The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. If you start talking to them you find out right away that you feel part of a team or a family. They are there to support you. It feels more like a team or family first and a business second. Which is very important to me. They also have a juice bar and a lot of televisions so you can watch Oprah while on the cardio machines. Their prices are the same as most other gym's. Not very expensive but not quite cheap. In my opinion, you definitely are getting a good price. With the addition of new, on site tanning beds they are showing that they are keeping up with the competition at a steady pace. Fitness Fx has been one of my favorite gyms for all of the above reasons. But perhaps the reason why I give it a fourth star is because they are improving with new equipment, more programs and store renovations without increasing the price of their membership. One of the most admirable things I have seen a gym do in a long time! And I definitely took notice. So stop sitting around, reading my reviews and head for the gym! Afterwards get a protein shake and go back to reading my reviews. :)

Whatever machine I'm interested in is usually available immediately or within 20 minutes. It's a very friendly place, and things are generally tidy and ready to use. I do find that depending on the time of day there are some folks who forget the "please don't drop your weights and scare the jittery among us" rule, and clang their weights pretty hard on the ground. That said, the management have responded well to this kind of problem and promised to remind repeat-offenders to control their dumbells lest they bounce on someone's toes and cause a more serious injury than a simple pulled hamstring. The rates are really reasonable, and they've been good lately at updating their class schedule too. ETA: Within hours of writing my review I went to get some exercise and found new cardio machines all set up! Well done, guys :)

It's what happens when you lose a lot of weight and actually come to realize you like doing crazy things like run marathons, complete triathlons and lift heavy stuff. As a newer member to CGC I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the set up. The cost is reasonable too at about $50/month for a year membership. I haven't taken any classes so I can't vouch for that portion of the gym but I do hang out upstairs in the cardio room quite a bit and so far so good. They tell me it's not too busy during the morning/day. As of yet I've never had to wait for a treadmill. When it is feeling a little "packed" I'll go run laps on the indoor track. It's a great way to get in some nice cross training in between some push ups or perfecting the pull-up. My favorite part about CGC is the pool(s). Olympic standard size and as of yet never too busy to not get a lane. Instead of chloride as standard chemical cleaner they use bromide (much gentler on the skin). Locker rooms (both wet and dry options) are spacious. Lockers themselves are big for that over stuffed gym bag. Showers are kind of funky but once you get the hang of them they're not too bad. And while I don't frequent Subway, it's very convenient to be able to grab a little nosh on the way out.

I went to a class at this studio for the first time about two years ago, and this summer bought an unlimited pass and practiced daily. I am currently enrolled in their Yoga Teacher Training program, and have nothing but good things to say about all of the wonderful people who work and train here. If you're thinking about doing your teacher training in Halifax, I recommend their weekends-program. It spans about 9/10 months and gives you a lot of time to practice teaching while going through the course. Mike, Maxine and Leslie focus a great deal of time on proper alignment and anatomy education, which is essential if you're going to be a safe teacher. The studio's focus is Hatha flow yoga; as well many of the teachers also implement principles from the Baptiste tradition. There is a weekly mediation class, as well as a couple of classes dedicated to the Ashtanga tradition. You will also find family yoga, yoga-dance and prenatal classes. The studio has been around for quite some time and you will find regulars and newbies alike attending classes. I recommend giving this studio a whirl. It is a very comfortable and inviting place to further your practice.

They don't try and tell you that it's any sort of miracle activity that'll get you looking like you could slay vampires or make you strong enough to punch out Nouveau Rocky. What they do offer is support, encouragement, and a healthy dose of reality. It's gonna hurt, it's going to knock the breath out of you, but you're going to be healthier and stronger, and it'll totally be worth it. Note, I said healthier, not skinnier. Yes, if you punch the hell out of the bags, you will lose weight, you will lose inches, you will build muscle. But you'll also boost your immune system, learn techniques that could actually help you protect yourself in a nasty situation and give you the confidence that comes from hitting hard. The Hit is a franchise rather than a chain, and Phil and Steffi run the show by themselves. They know everyone's name, and keep track of their progress so they can show you how to up the difficulty at a station if they notice it's getting too easy for you (doh!) You're never left on your own. If you ever have questions or want to push yourself, they're right there as you go through the circuit. The prices are insanely high for what you get (zero discount if you're a student!!) and it's the same workout over and over again, which means it's repetitive and boring. I would never recommend this gym to anyone. I'm disgusted with how my personal health situation was handled.

I was missing my time at the Sackville Sports Stadium, and even still I miss the swimming. I digress. Strides is very clean and welcoming. The entrance is warm and friendly and the staff are always willing to give you a hand or answer your questions. As far as prices go, it's rare to find a gym that will offer one, three and year-long memberships...but they do some at a price. I chose the three-month option since I intend to start house shopping in HRM in the near future. It was $50 for the "administrative fee" (which, let's face it...it's a money grab no matter which way you put it) and the $55/month for three months. The change rooms are clean and tidy, and even though I forgot my lock at home I felt relatively safe leaving my purse in there. There is also a steam room which is GREAT after a work out. I intend to use that like crazy. Anyway, I made my way up to the cardio room which was busy but I was able to snag a treadmill. The equipment is relatively new, the space is cool and clean and the TVs had a good variety (though I am on of those people that jog and read a Kobo..so shoot me!) I made my down to the weight area. It's a little bit cramped to be honest. The machines don't have a whole lot of space between them and the beefy muscly group there was dominating around half of the space with no letting up. I hung around the free-weights and did my workout and left. Overall it's a gym. But tit's independent and locally run and it's the best gym we have out here!
