My husband has been in Halifax three times and was treated very well all three times. He has had bad roommates in cardiac care, but I seriously can't blame the hospital for that. They got him moved as soon as another bed was available. We were both in Halifax after a very serious car accident, leaving him with broken ribs and me with neck fracture and lumbar spine fracture. We went into Brooks rehab after our hospital stay, and that was very good also. Our one main concern was that my husband was without pain meds and food/water for an extended amount of time because they kept saying he was going for a specific MRI (for gallbladder and pancreatitis), but they never showed up until the next day. He was in serious pain, even sweating due to pain, so I was very upset by this. Alex and Brittney, on 7th floor were WONDERFUL nurses! They came quickly when he needed them and never made him feel like a burden to them. read more

These crises are considered medical emergencies and are commonly treated with timely opioid pain management when clinically indicated. In the video, the physician was seen talking down to her, due to her need for appropriate pain relief medication while citing vague statements like "studies show it's dangerous," despite the patient being in an emergency setting and clearly in distress. To many viewers like myself, this interaction reflected a lack of empathy, outdated or misapplied reasoning, and troubling bias, particularly toward a young Black woman advocating for herself. Regardless of intent, the encounter raised serious concerns about how pain, race, and chronic illness are handled in emergency medicine. Patients with sickle cell disease already face significant stigma and disbelief in healthcare settings, and situations like this only reinforce that fear. Was an inpatient for 6 days. Told I couldn't get any of my routine meds 13 different per day for chronic illnesses that they only treat the symptoms that you are admitted for. Then one nurse tried to start an IV 3 times and finally the lab person came in and "started it". I told them that it burned more than it should be was told that it was the Rocephin. I told them that I have had IV Rocephin many time and it never burned like this. After her being called to the room 3 times my arm from my elbow to my fingers was bright red and swollen and burned like I stuck it in a fire. Then I removed the IV myself. She finally came and said that it burned so bad because it wasn't flushed before removed. I told her I was a retired nurse and that even if it was flushed wouldn't make a difference since it wasn't in the vein. Called in the floor nurse and explained all that had happened and ask not to have that nurse in my room the remainder of my stay. Well I was dismissed the fallowing morning. Three days later I was admitted to another hospital because my temp spiked to 103 degrees again. read more

Teagan in the ER was amazing. Her attention to detail was great. She took great care of me, and was very nice. I noticed her excitement of enjoying what she does and making sure she does great. The IV she did on me was wonderful I didn't even feel it. In ICU, Nurse Jillian took great care of me you can tell Jillian really loves to make sure the patients assigned are doing great and offers amazing care to them. Poor quality care in emergency room. The doctor performed a battery of unnecessary test and sent me home with a generalized diagnosis. When I asked for an amendment to my diagnosis to make it more clear to my insurance, the doctor refused and my insurancecompanyrefusedto pay.. This review is for the Labor & Delivery section of the hospital. If you just want the quick summary it's 100% Have your baby here, the staff was beyond incredible! As first time parents we were really nervous so I hope someday this review will make some other expecting parents feel great about coming to Halifax to have their baby. First a review of our main nurses (I'll try to keep it short because honestly we could write pages raving on how amazing they all were). 1. Aletha our night nurse might be the most incredible human being on the planet. We had a really long delivery; 39 hour induction including over 25 hours of active labor. As you can imagine my poor wife was exhausted. I know Aletha had to have other patients as well, but somehow it always felt like she was there every single second we needed anything. Even more amazing on the 2nd night Aletha's 12 hour shift was supposed to end at 7 am while we were about 36 hours in. I'm still not sure exactly how Aletha knew but she just seemed to know my wife and I were hoping she would be able to stay, and sure enough Aletha worked 15 hours straight to stay with us through the birth of our son. That extra 3 hours meant my wife got to be that much more comfortable having this amazing person helping to deliver our son, and we will be forever grateful we had this phenomenal nurse to help us through. 2. Sarah (our day nurse)- Have you ever met someone where it's simply impossible to talk to them without smiling and feeling happy? Sarah is this exact person. Picture just a ball of good energy. Whether it was a joke, a story, a smile or just anything to make my wife feel better Sarah was perfect for it. All while handling all her patients and duties. Exactly what you need when going through labor. People like here are one more reason to choose Halifax. 3. Kaylee- Another day nurse we had the pleasure of having. Kaylee managed to combine a no nonsense attitude get the job done while making it clear she genuinely cared about us. Her leadership was very calming and you just knew instantly you are in good hands when she's around. She answered so many questions from us and again made us feel comfortable in a stressful time. 4. Kendal- Kendal was a nurse from another department moving over to labor and delivery. She has 3 kids of her own and multiple times she was able to give advice, answer a question, reassure us about difficulties etc etc. She was kind and friendly and someday there will be another new mom who gets reassured by Nurse Kendal Moving to our general experience. Right of the bat Halifax is the only Level 3 NICU in the area. They also offer tours on Tuesday afternoons before you deliver just so you can see everywhere you will be going, fill out paperwork ahead of time and just be a little more comfortable. Another thing we appreciated after we got admitted they let us know they had training nurses (as all hospitals do) who may want to watch the delivery but that our comfort was paramount and if we didn't want any extra people in the room none of them had to come. We wanted to at least try and help a little and agreed to having one training nurse observe who wound up being a lovely girl named Trinity. She was really sweet, eager to learn and be helpful. I imagine training under these amazing Halifax nurses Trinity will someday make another set of parents have a great delivery experience. One more just perfect example of how much these Halifax nurses care. As mentioned our labor was quite extended and my wife had been stuck at 4cm for hours. Every other person who had come in around the same time as us had already had their babies. Aletha came in to give my wife another check and when she came up smiling we knew we had finally progressed. Aletha entered in we were 9cm (baby almost ready to come) in the computer and about 5 seconds later we heard the entire floor of nurses cheer. Turns out they had all been checking on us on their external monitors for hours rooting for us. It felt fantastic to literally be able to hear people caring that much. In summary I understand there might be a newer or prettier hospital somewhere, but I am beyond certain you will not find a safer, more comforting experience for delivery with people who genuinely care about you than Halifax Health Labor Delivery. read more

I am so grateful for the Halifax Health ER team.....Dr Springer and his ortho team. In June I fell and got a bad break to my wrist. It was a couple of breaks with bone misalignment. Everything seemed to be pointing me to a surgical repair. It didn't look like it would go any other way. Thanks to the dedication, care, and genuine concern for my care....they were able to reset (reduction) my wrist to where it was a 50/50 chance of surgery. When my Ortho saw me later he said it was such a wonderful job that he felt I would heal on my own. Here I am 8 weeks out and I'm so grateful to have avoided the additional pain and big expenses of surgery. I can not thank this team enough. Had they not given their best I would have gone thru so much more....and I didn't have to! Thank you Dr. Springer and your team of professionals. I will always be grateful and one last thing....they even managed to get my wedding ring off my extremely swollen finger without cutting it. That was a major feat in itself!! I have been several times. I have a brain injury which causes me to be a fall risk. I fell several times from 2012-2016 was brought there and put on steroids which does not help the situation. The techs and many of the nurses on their phones; could care less about the patients. Fight for good care; stay away from. I wish had. In 2016 they sent me back to a man who was hitting me. Two weeks later, while in the domestic violence shelter, I fell; was sent there, and nothing was done, again. They really don't care. read more

Three total visits and had nothing but terrible service. First was for a kidney stone, I was seen by an ER doctor Friday morning, a stint was going to be put in to relieve the pressure, I was told this was going to be an outpatient procedure and to follow up with my PCP.. They discharged me Sunday noon. I wasn't supposed to stay there. Second was my son sprained his foot, we waited hours to be seen and when we did, the nurse wrapped up his foot and as soon as we got home, it unraveled. We had to wrap it ourselves which gave him a ulcer wound on his heel .Had to get his pediatrician to look at it, and rewrap it. Third was I was in extreme pain (10+) I went to the ER to be told it was going to be a wait. Well it was a 2.5 hour wait, there were people coming in and out, and so I walked out. I ended up going to my local VA which took me right away and I was in and out within the hour. Since than, I have never stepped foot there. I'll drive to lake Nona VA or urgent care before I get seen there again. read more

I had quite the experience at Halifax with my partner! They went in for STOMACH pain! They took a blood test, a urine test, and a chest scan. Blood came back normal but ONLY after FOUR DIFFERENT nurses had to attempt to take their blood because they kept blowing their veins out! Pictures are the result of what they did to their arm, which has never happened before when they have had their blood drawn. Chest scan was completely useless since 90% of their pain was in the stomach. They made us sit in the er waiting room for 4 hours waiting for results only to let us sit in an actual room for about 20 minutes before telling us the ONLY problem was a UTI and sending us home with an antibiotic and zofran. Which for the most part has been useless. They gave us no advice on what to do other than take the antibiotic. They are still having stomach issues and we will most likely go to a different hospital due to this very lackluster treatment. read more

I tested positive for COVID this morning, and my wife began calling our doctor at Halifax Health. The message said hold on and someone would be with them soon. After three 30 minute waits, she gave up. I called them also, and after 15 minutes drove to the office, which had closed at noon. A staff member who was still there said I should try Halifax Urgent Care on the ground floor. I appeared at the window, explained that I was positive for COVID, my doctor had closed at noon, and I am immune compromised. She turned to her co-worker and said "This guy has COVID and is immune compromised, can we do anything for him?" I stated that her question told me that they weren't competent to help me, so I left. Avoid Halifax Health if there is any way you possibly can. read more

This is long but please take the time to read it. If we could give zero stars we would. It was the most horrible experience ever. We first went to the ER to have my husband looked at. He needed care for dehydration, upset stomach and lack of sleep. He was taken back to the ER very quickly; there was almost no wait time at all. After he was taken back to an examining room, he waited a good amount of time to be seen by someone, although it was not at all busy in the ER. The Dr was quick to assume things about my husband's current & past habits. The Dr was speaking about my husband's condition in front of our 11 year old which was especially hard for her. The doctor never actually examined my husband; the doctor talked to him and left the room in a matter of minutes. We were then transferred to a patient room in the ER. The staff there was great. They checked on my husband consistently and helped him in every way possible. His blood sugar at the ER was 157. He was admitted to the hospital after a little while. It took a very long time to get a room ready for him. From the beginning of him being transferred to a room, it was a complete nightmare. One of the nurses stated that in her professional opinion, he would probably need a blood transfusion. She also insinuated that at any moment, he could go into liver and pancreatic failure, and also mentioned ascites. She then wanted to know who he authorized his belongings to go to. This may be protocol at this hospital but it does nothing to help patients with a pre-existing anxiety condition. Although there was no reason, he was put on a clear liquid diet. He did not eat solid foods for 42 hours for no reason at all. He is a diabetic & was given a cardiac (high sugar) diet. Six hours after being admitted, his sugar spiked to 322. Only after we said something to the nurse, was his diet then changed. I immediately went home, got low sugar foods and water. Within 12 hours, it dropped to 94. Another nurse was also instigating and doing her own diagnosis of my husband's issue. Note that he still had not been seen by a doctor at this point. He had been there for 3 days & they had done NOTHING. We told them to either discharge him or we would leave AMA (against medical advice), at which point they told us that insurance would not pay. We spoke to Medicare and they will pay. I am not sure if it is standard protocol to tell people this or if something has changed recently. We ended up leaving AMA. At the hospital, the last blood pressure reading was 183/98. When we arrived home, he took his blood pressure again; his systolic dropped 48 points and his reading was 135/88. He was so upset over the negative experience that his blood pressure was high almost the entire time that he was checked in to the hospital. Something else that should be noted is that my husband's room and bathroom were filthy. A nurse also stated that that floor was used for storage and converted during COVID. Overall, this was the absolute worst experience that we have ever had in over 40 years of routine & emergency Dr experience, whether it be as a patient or as a visitor. At this point, this has recharged my husband's white coat syndrome, and he is very hesitant to go to any hospitals. read more

My wife had surgery there on Sept 1, 2023. She has a catheter and they had her on her stomach for 4 hrs so by 6:30 pm it was clogged and bed and covers were soaked. After 45 minutes waiting and nothing I changed her and asked for fresh blankets. Nurse brought 1 little blankets and said that was all they had. I asked for a diaper to prevent her from soiling and wetting the bed again and she advised that the hospital didn't have diapers anymore. I asked for a basin so she could brush her teeth and she said that I had to bring that from home. I went home and got diapers, blanket, and toothbrush supplies. I arrived Saturday morning to find her breakfast tray on a table 4 feet from her bed and cold and untouched. This turned out to be the norm. I hired a caregiver to go and stay with her and take care of her in the hospital for when I was not there. If she wanted ice water we had to go and get it. Move forward a week and due to no diaper on her she has soiled the bed. I let them know and waited 45 minutes and was about to clean her when the doctor showed up. He went and got them and they took care of her. I was supposed to have surgery here on my back in November due to my favorite back surgeon being here but I am now looking for a new one to go somewhere else. Seems short supplies and staff. They seem to spend all their money on commercials. read more

After two hours of being ignored by Halifax. 9I eventually pulled it out which set my face to. Keeping profusely. Though, it took some yanking and it left a huge hole in my faces it's pretty clear I need stitches but I sat in the waiting room here for 3 hours before I walked away and went to the hospital down the street who cared for me and had me sewn up within an hour. Failure Halifax, on the other hand, had me wait 3 hours with absolutely no discernible progress. I gave up eventually, at 4 am, when I got there at 1 am. Fun Halifax hospital! Absolute, irresponsible garbage. Only go on weekdays when everyone is at work. Otherwise, there is a better, more attentive hospital locally and while it may be more of a drive, you will still save tons of time waiting for help that will never come apparently I went to the store and bought butterfly bandages. What else could I do considering I had bunked up with a junkie who couldn't resist inviting his jubkie friends over. While they suck, they have some good advice. Always keep your feet and your body balance in the very middle of the board rather than the front or the back or either side. I have no idea whether or not you're going to want to pursue a career in gymnastics, but just in case there is that.. . Good or bad reports abound about HMC. Having been in the area for 25yrs it has always been known as the Trauma hospital. If really bad things happen to you this place has MOST of what you need. They will still send a fair amount of problems to Orlando or Gainsvill that they can not handle. I stayed for about 48 hours after badly breaking my tibia and fibula. I entered the ER via ambulance. The hospital was disorganized in every perceptible way. After waiting several hours I received an x ray. I expected to wait, that's just the ER. But then after the x ray confirmed the huge breaks, I was told I'd receive pain medication, but instead after 45 minutes I was told they needed more x rays. After the second one (again in horrible agony) I received pain medication (morphine). Later I received ketamine anesthesia so they could properly splint my leg, because it would have been too painful if I was awake. My wife, a medical professional, wasn't allowed to see me during this entire time, nor would they tell her what was going on at all. I was so lucky that I wore my Apple Watch because I could call her on it. Only after I woke up was she allowed to see me, after being in the dark for this entire process of over four hours. I received a room after that and the night shift nurse was excellent. During the night sleep was impossible because there were constant alarms going off nearby, as well as a PC in my room with a cooling fan running full speed 100% of the time (practically a jet engine). The following day I was scheduled for orthopedic surgery. The day shift nurse was inattentive and after I signed all the paperwork she brought pills for prep and apple juice. I did not know that I was allowed only water, so my surgery was pushed back several hours and I had to stay a second night. I had a suspicion about the water but I trusted that she knew better. After that I no longer blindly trust medical professionals (I'm currently fighting the extra night's charge with the hospital and insurance). The same incompetent nurse pushed a steroid into me too fast and my entire body became itchy and tingly, causing massive panic. I was told the pre-op would last 1 hour, it lasted 2. I was told that my wife could not accompany me and I could not have my phone to communicate with her, yet later another patient came in with a family member (elderly woman with presumably her daughter, I'm glad for them at least). The surgery went well and the surgeon was very kind and informative. The following night I had the same experience as before: excellent nurse but awful environment. On day three my new nurse didn't introduce herself after the shift change (about 730am) and I didn't see her for several hours. It turns out she was a trainee on her third shift ever after graduation. Despite that she was very polite and knowledgeable and, in fact, her trainer was the problem: very rude, short, and always trying to leave the room asap. That's my beat-by-beat experience. The overall issues, across every employee, was 1. Lack of communication (many people having me sign the same paperwork, or even someone else's paperwork by mistake) 2. Lack of clear timelines (constantly hearing "I'll be right back with that" and then waiting 90 minutes) 3. Lack of promptness: an alarm on my IV device went off at 4am and it took 5 minutes to deactivate, which I know because I started a stopwatch as it happened so many times. 4. Failure to follow committed schedule (I was to receive certain pain meds rotating every 90 minutes, but I had to call almost every time). I waited up to an hour after calling for scheduled pain medication several times. There were many more tiny items of confusion but i think this review gets the point across, as is. read more

I should be considered an expert hospital attendee after having more than 20 surgeries in my life so far (and 3 more to go). Last night I went to Halifax hospital last night for severe abdominal pain and vomiting. At the intake window the girl (who finally took my info), and 2 others were discussing the matter of "a chair" for about 5 minutes before she asked for name, etc. My vitals were taken promptly afterward and I was told to wait in the lobby until called. In only 25 minutes I was called and a PA took notes on my symptoms. I was then sent to a private room where a nurse came in to take blood. While she actually bragged about how good she was at taking blood, as it turned out she was actually the worst I'd ever experienced. She stuck the needle clear through my vein into a nerve. The very "nervy" young lady got upset because I told her it hurt like hell. She actually said it was my fault for "moving" and that she'd have someone else do it. (As if I would object!) A male nurse came in and he was honest in stating he didn't have much practice in taking blood. My alarms went off and I wanted to leave and go to another hospital. The poor guy was pleading with me not to leave and that he would do his best not to hurt me. Since he was a guy I knew what options I had if he did the same, I let him have the 1st shot. After his first attempt, which hardly hurt at all, he couldn't draw anything. Another first for me. The second attempt was successful and even less painless. Shortly afterward the doctor came and we discussed what my problem may be. Minutes later I was taken for a CT scan. About 20 minutes after the CT scan the doctor came in and described what may be the problem, but that I had to have surgery to eliminate one possible cause in any case. He said he would discharge me. That was at 8:10 PM, about 2 hours after I arrived. I sat in that room for the next 3-1/2 hours watching the nursing staff act as if they weren't there to assist patients, but act like a bunch of teenagers getting ready for the next party. I decided to remove all the equipment I could from my body and get my shirt on. That got their attention! I was then released at 12:43 AM. I've been a victim of drunk and/or reckless drivers and several acts of someone's stupidity in 26 cases since the 1970s, and have had way too many opportunities to experience the inner workings of many hospitals in Florida. Though I have never watched the soap "General Hospital," I can honestly say that the staff at Halifax Hospital may serve as a very fine platform to rival the longstanding show. My take on Halifax Hospital is this: First, most of the staff, in general, were very pleasant. That being said, however, those seeking medical help, but prefer to be watching a soap opera in real time, of which may help you cope with your pain and agony, I lightly recommend Halifax Hospital. For those who are solely concerned with your health and how it is affecting your life, please take my advice and go to another hospital. But, above all else, stay healthy and please stay safe for you, your family and all those around you! read more

May 22, 2019 my 28 year old daughter was admitted to Halifax Medical Center, Emergency Room. Her blood and urine tested clean, her psych evaluation perfect and yet according to her records they administered Narcan. They were aware my daughter had previously been dealing with addiction, which, by the way, was doctor induced through prescribing. I later learned that Pfizer had a recall on two of it's narcan cartridges that were sold across the country to emergency rooms and emergency units. The result of the tainted cartridges is the development of a pulmonary embolism over 2 to 5 days. Note, post mortum, the accuracy of the test given to determine a pulmonary embolism is reduced with time. I was moving to FL in a week when my daughter first was admitted to HMC for Bronchitis. I later learned she was never moved out of the emergency unit. On May 27, 2019, the morning she was to be released, between 5:00 and 6:00am, she suddenly died. To date I received five different scenarios as to how she died. The attending doctor was Dr. Schwartz and also Dr. Lightburn . They wouldn't talk to me once I started questioning things. But can you imagine, FIVE DIFFERENT SCENARIOS as to how my daughter died? I was on the phone with my daughter the night before her death and we were making plans. She sounded good. She said, "mom, they're here to give me my medication , do you want to hold on or should I call you back?" I was packing so I said, call me back. We never spoke again. They deny giving her mediation that night, but interesting enough, she had it every other night. So here come the lies... Scenario 1: Dr. Schwartz calls my sister who lives in FL and tells her that "IT'S HERESY, but THEY said they found Zoe with two syringes and an empty tampon holder with white powder in it and that she injected something into her IV and died." What did they do with the IV? Threw it out. Did they call the police to test the drug paraphanalia? NO. I did. I never actually saw any of it. And the report on what was found changed at least 4 times during this process. That's correct FOUR TIMES even after her body was long gone. Scenario 2: The administration. Zoe walked up to the desk this morning and collapsed and couldn't be revived. Scenario 3: The emergency room director, Rob Love, claimed that my daughter was having difficulty breathing and called for staff. He said, they gave her a dose of albuterol but shortly after, she called again with difficulty breathing. He said her pulse was too high and her breathing too labored to administer another dose of albuterol and he claims they asked her if she took something. Supposedly she said, Wellbutrin which is a prescribed medication she was on. (Yes the doctors had her on 8-14 pharmaceutical drugs at all times for the bs diagnosis of bipolar) The ER director said, "There's no way she could have overdosed on Wellbutrin. She would have had to take a boatload."According to her medical records just before she died, they administered two doses of narcan. Narcan. Right. When her heart was racing out of her chest and her breathing was labored. Scenario 4:Private lab records. "Suicide." Scenario 5: Terri in Risk Management. "I investigated this, and they found your daughter thrashing about in her bed and they couldn't revive her!!!" ME: You mean after the albuterol? Terri" "There was no albuterol treatment. " This leaves me to wonder... since the lies never stopped coming and no one is willing to truly take responsibility for her death, maybe there's a 6th scenario. This evening I was listening to "DR. BYRNE" speak on the topic of "BRAIN DEATH IS A LIE." I highly recommend if you are an organ donor that you go to YouTube and listen to this. SERIOUSLY. Please do it for your own sake or the sake of your children. I have to wonder if that's the REAL reason my daughter died. 16-30 are the most vulnerable ages for practitioners of death to steal organs. Maybe that is scenario 6 in my daughters case. I have no way of knowing. They weren't going to do an autopsy but we made that happen. The Volusia County Morgues, Chief Medical Examiner resigned while my daughters body was there. There was an interview with her in the Daytona Beach Journal. She was quoted as saying "The margin for error is too great at the morgue and I don't want to risk my reputation." On my daughter's autopsy its stated that she had breast implants which she didn't. They cause of death was supposedly a welbutrin overdose. I don't buy it. Unless they overdosed her on it, she had no way of getting extra medication. But even with that, My daughter was 28. The FL statutes forbid me to pursue wrongful death. May they all rot in hell. read more

COME HERE IF YOU WANT TO DIE This is a special medical purgatory where pseudo doctors and half baked nurses play hospital. Nothing here for Mental Health other then a waiting room, on to bigger waiting rooms, on to the final mental health wing where you will spend hours wondering just how you got yourself in this personal hell. Treatment is non existent unless you believe in the power of psychotropic medication to numb your brain. If you don't comply get ready for a long expensive stay until you have been "rehabilitated" Dr. Robert Daly-This guy beyond sucks. Never once saw me in the ER other then giving an order for an injection against my will and then charges me $650 for it. Take a trip to the other side you schmuck, you wouldn't last. read more

I want to thank the nursing staff and physician that took care of my very sick 5 year old. They acted swiftly and got him treated appropriately. Diagnosis of Influenza A even with him being vaccinated. Was able to start him on Tamiflu because they were so good in seeing him so quickly and the window of opportunity for that medication is small. I would trust any place else with my little one as they are truly the best!! I used to value this hospital over all in the area, but after my uncles recent accident this hospital makes me fear to ever put my life in another health professionals hands. Nurses need to truly have a passion for their job. Someone's circumstances, situation, how they look is nothing to judge without knowing their story. To the nurses and assistants who gave him compressions after coding, he heard everything you said. He heard you tell him to go ahead and die, he heard you say f*** him after one young nurse told you all to stop treating him like that, he heard you talk about his teeth and how meaningless his life was to you all. I hope you all lose your job. And I pray to the good Lord up above that one day you reap what you sow and you experience a family member struggling with addiction. Because all you see is someone who hit a rough patch in their life, not what got them there.
