Our story---I started my oldest child at another preschool when he was 3 years old, we were looking for him to gain some independence and social skills. It was a good first experience, but in my heart I felt it was lacking that communication and sense of community I was searching for. I felt I wanted to be more hands on and a part of what my child was doing, so I began the search... We found Metzger and decided to give it a try. I had never heard of a co-op or knew what it was all about so for me the entire experience was new and refreshing vs. the pick up, drop off, and somewhat cold routine school day that we had come from. My child went from, "Mom I don't really want to go to school today." To every single night asking, "is tonight a school night mom? Do we have school tomorrow?" He is now eager to go and that makes my heart so happy. He loves his friends and teacher Mary so much and is really thriving and becoming a fun person to watch grow and excel in his learning. Honestly, as a parent what more could I ask for? My youngest starts this upcoming year at 3 years old and we plan to continue until he is ready for kindergarten! Everyone is so welcoming, outgoing and nice to work with. You get lots of chances to meet all the other parents as well. I love that Metzger does a lot of outside of school hours extra activities for people to be a part of if they chose to. Such as, *fruit festivals *costume parties * caroling night and holiday festivities *ginger bread house making *open houses *family Saturday's for parents who can't always come to the class room *field trips *spring outings- just a few to name off the top of my head. Each room has a theme: kitchen, dress up, wooden play structure, even a pit of beans to play in. We brought our almost one year old to play and she had a blast on the slide and in the play kitchen. For a kids play area, I was shocked by how clean the items are kept, and the toys are well organized. It's only six dollars per kid or five for a crawler. The weekend hours are limited, unfortunately. It would be awesome to have Saturday afternoon open. I'm so glad we were able to spend the morning here! One tip, adults and kids must wear socks, no shoes.

My disabled mother came to live with us 8 years ago and languished in bed all day watching TV. My hair stylist told me about Gentog when it opened (her mother is one of the senior caregivers) and my mom started attending once a week at first. She now goes twice a week and has for almost 5 years. Gentog provides great social interaction, but more than that, she's made lifelong friends with the staff and other participants. Since starting Gentog, my mother's health has improved as well. The social interaction alone is a plus, but they were also helpful in connecting us with other senior services. My mom gained a level of independence once they got her started using the TriMet lift bus system, and she now gets books delivered by mail from the local library. They also provide amazing support for caregivers through educational classes, seminars and support groups. We are moving out of state, and one of the hardest parts of this move is leaving Gentog. We will miss their loving care and support tremendously! I'd trust Gentog to care for any of my family members, babies or adults. They are truly amazing!

Before enrolling our daughter in 3rd grade, we specifically asked whether a child with no French…read morebackground could succeed at ILA. We were assured that she could and were encouraged to enroll. Unfortunately, our experience was very different. We repeatedly tried to contact our daughter's teacher, Françoise Coulon Lantz, to ask how we could support a beginner French learner at home. Communication did not occur until I showed up in-person requesting a meeting. During that meeting, she described our daughter as not knowing her purpose at school and acting "goofy." She then said many students had French-speaking parents, grandparents, or connections to France and asked, "What do you have?" As multilingual immigrants, this was surprising. I speak four languages and my husband speaks seven. We have never been asked to justify learning a language based on ancestry or cultural ties. We believe language education should be open to all children. Our daughter became afraid to ask questions, felt singled out at snack time, and excluded from classroom activities shared with parents in group chat. She was also expected to request restroom permission in French despite being a beginner, which often left her afraid to speak up! We also had concerning interactions with Pierre Burthey, who said families typically attend ILA due to French cultural ties or the ability to afford private school, then asked which applied to us. He also suggested our daughter might be better suited for public school. The impact on our daughter was significant. By the end of the fall term, she was anxious about attending school and often resisted going. We withdrew her. After winter break, the school created an individualized plan with other teacher replacing Françoise, and she thrived--regaining confidence and enjoying learning again. After three month, we were told by Pierre of his decision: our daughter is required to return to Françoise's class despite her distress. When we raised concerns, we felt dismissed and withdrew her that day. We are grateful to Valentin Raclot, Scott Murphy, Beatriz Ruiz, Valérie Rogers, Daour Mboup, Marc Bescond, Bayel Sarr, and Colin Labelle for their professionalism, kindness, and support. However, our overall experience at the 3rd-5th grade level was overwhelmingly negative. Families with children entering French immersion without prior experience should carefully consider whether this environment is the right fit. For our family, it was a nightmare!
