We had arrived in Hamburg by train but we're headed to Amsterdam by air and that means we're at HAM for our flight. Dropped off by taxi, it took a bit of time to find the right counters as we were so early that the Amsterdam flight wasn't even up on the boards. This is the usual setup for most non-US airports. Counters can sometimes rotate and so they post your departing destination (in order by departure, which I find confusing) and the counter where you need to check in. Once past that hurdle, the rest of the process was easy. Security was not difficult, especially as our Delta elite status got us into the fast pass queue. European standard security - remove all segregated liquids, laptops and other electronics out, shoes on, belt on and only a magnetometer. Through security is a large duty free shop with no "anti scent bypass" option so I zipped past it as quickly as I could. Lots of other shopping, many restaurants and at least three different airline lounges. Gate numbers are clearly posted, toilets were plentiful and clean enough. Worst experience I've had I think ever in an airport. I had a flight scheduled for 2:10PM on a Friday in July 2022. I got to the airport around 11:15AM, went to check in at Icelandair (I checked in online the day before, but because my flight was going to the US, I think I had to go to the counter to get my passport and vaccination card checked). I was thankfully flying business class so I didn't have to stand in the somewhat lengthy line there. I then headed to the security line...which ended up going outside of the airport. Outside! I waited for 45 minutes outside the airport in the line, and there was no wifi out there. Thankfully there was an overhang so I wasn't out in the sun the entire time, but there were designated smoking areas so there were amounts of time where the air was extremely unpleasant. Once inside, at least there was wifi, and then I waited another almost 1.5 hours to clear security. I was somewhat concerned about missing my flight even though I had gotten to the airport 3 hours early. Ridiculous! After getting on the plane, the captain announced the flight being delayed about half an hour to wait for other passengers since the security line is so long. I had a connecting flight that was less than one hour after landing, but thankfully the flight landed on time and I made it to my connecting flight without any problems. Terrible experience. I understand that the airport might be short-staffed and all, but either schedule fewer flights or get more staff. This is not an acceptable way to run an airport. read more

Decent airport to fly into though it was pretty busy. The system they have for grabbing luggage could be improved. That area and information was a little hectic. The carasoul area wasn't too big either. Besides that, a decent airport. I flew here from a connection from Frankfurt so there weren't any issues with that. Le pire aéroport où nous sommes allés : Samedi 2/09 : charter Paris-Hambourg affrété par MSC On a attendu 1h40 les bagages. Aucune explication. Pratiquement aucun personnel. Personne sur le tarmac. On aurait cru que l'aéroport était en grève ! Samedi 9/09 : charter Hambourg-Paris affrété par MSC Notre avion était là avec 30' d'avance. Or, nous avons attendu dans une petite salle bondée 2h00 (où des personnes toussaient, résultat : nous avons la COVID !). Peu d'explications. Les personnes qui arrivaient ont dû attendre plus d'une heure dans l'avion avant qu'un bus vienne les chercher (moins de 300m entre l'avion et le bâtiment des arrivées). Ensuite, il y avait des personnes dans l'avion qui nécessitaient une assistance. Elles ont dû attendre que la Croix Rouge vienne les sortir. Nous avions également des personnes handicapées : aucun fauteuil de disponible. Une honte ! Pratiquement aucun personnel. Personne sur le tarmac. On aurait cru que l'aéroport était en grève ! De plus, les 3 WC étaient très très sales, sans papier toilette. Je comprends que l'aéroport manque peut-être de personnel, mais il faut soit planifier moins de vols, soit recruter plus de personnel. I have been waiting in the line for the the last 3 and half hours to board my plane they need to be faster and more efficient

I arrive here a lot from the US. Every time I have to wait forever for my luggage, every single time. Today, I arrived at about 1pm from Reykjavik Iceland. Now I am waiting at the baggage claim for a whole hour (!) after 15 hrs of flights and Jetlag - and there is still no luggage in sight. The conveyer belt started about 10 minutes ago. I saw a single suitcase. Nothing else. This is crazy. I have been to many airports but never had to wait this long - not even close! And definitely not every single time. And while I am at it: why this disgusting smoke smell? Why the difficult internet where you have to give your email address and other info so you can use internet for a limited time? All avoidable and annoying things that completely suck. Fix it!! read more

Complicated baggage drop off. You have to do it yourself which is fine with me. BUT not all the machine where for Brussels airlines and they didn't work properly at all. Not only for me but for all the guys flying this airline. So after standing in line for ~60 minutes to go to a not working machine we had to stand in line again for an agent. The stuff around the machines were rude. My flight was 7: 15 am and I arrived at the airport at 4am which should be enough time. Haha. I was told my hand luggage was to heavy. After my suitcase was taken. No chance for me to put anything in the suitcase. So I had to take my laptop out, checking in my hand luggage and carrying my laptop by hand until I had the chance to buy a bag. And always rude stuff. My experience was really good. I was only departing so I didn't have to deal with some of the more annoying stuff like baggage claim and passport control. Security line was great. The conveyor machine is short so you can see your stuff and not feel the anxiety of thinking someone ahead of you took your stuff and walked away There is a good variety for food and shopping. The bathrooms are weirdly unkempt with graffiti for how clean the rest of the airport is. read more

I absolutely love HAM's modern airport! Well connected to the Haufbanhof, bright and airy design, tons of shops so you won't get bored if you have a long layover. (check out the Lufthansa luggage shop on Terminal 2 departures area for some Rimowa titanium luggages!) For foodies, you can go to Bistro Pier 1 near gates A17/18 departure area past security. With views of the planes taking off, you can have a warm snack (we had bratwurst naturally!) and Movenpick organic coffee. Or there's also a Marche bakery pre-security. Berlin Tegel looks like the ugly stepsister that desperately needs a makeover compared to HAM. read more

Gotta love German efficiency! I typically get to the airport around 2 hours prior to take off, it's my paranoid and American way just due to how long it can take back home to clear security and drop bags off. I got to the Hamburg airport about an hour and 45 minutes - an hour and 30 minutes early and was surprised at how quick and efficient bag drop at Lufthansa and security was a breeze too. For the most part most of the airport personnel seemed very friendly. I was also able to get an hour of free wifi by signing onto the Turkish Airlines wifi. Though when I landed into Hamburg from Frankfurt, I couldn't find any wifi connection. The airport is easy to navigate and has some nice looking stores and eateries. The restroom that I went to here also seemed a lot cleaner than the ones at Munich. though I took a taxi to/from here, The subway does go directly to the airport. 5 stars for efficiency and a nice mod airport. read more

Any airport with free wifi gets 5-stars. So here are yours, Flughafen Hamburg. Stars and wifi bars (courtesy of Mobilcom-Debitel)*, if you're flying out of Hamburg...you're in for a treat. Also, pretty decent shopping, and in the Terminal 1 international departures there is a very nice cafe with tables overlooking the jetway. I'd even go as far as to call it serene. Typically not a word I use with an airport, but between the free wifi, a freshly made baguette and salami sandwich with kombucha and a coffee to finish...well, I was a happy flier. Approved. Don't have much to say in terms of amenities or anything, but I have to say that this airport gave me on the best help ever. Let me paint a picture, here I am in Berlin at about 3 pm and my flight is out of Hamburg at 9.45pm. My plan: take the express train at 5 pm to land in Hamburg at 7, just in time for my flight. What happened : didn't get on the correct express one and accidently took a local. Ended up arriving in Hamburg Hbf at 8.30. Took a cab to the airport and reached at 9.00. The checkin counter long closed and here I am on the verge of tears. ( couldn't miss the flight because I had a huge presentation and meeting like three hours after I was supposed to land). I see the attendant and ask if there's anyway she can help. She looks at me with a smile on her face and says, hope you can run! She takes me to security, explains the situation, pushes me thou and I AM RUNNING THROUGH THE TERMINAL. Reach the gate at 9 30 and they let me in. I made it and it was all thanks to that lovely lovely lady. read more

One of the best airport experiences I've had in Europe. It's not overly busy or crowded. Staff we are very helpful directing passengers to their correct locations. The border officials were efficient and pleasant to speak with. This was the quickest I've been passed through border control. Most flights the day I was there were on time, and I watched a number of flights board in the lower level gates A21-A24 area. Highly efficient people. It was nice to see it! Bathrooms are clean and free. The airport is extremely clean in general. Currently there is a large construction project going on outside, but it didn't seem to have any significant impact on my experience. There was an air of calm in this airport. I didn't see people rushing around like crazy to get to their gate. No one was arguing. Passengers waiting were quiet and relaxed. This is a much better airport to make connections to Warsaw than say Brussels or Munich. I would definitely considering buying my next ticket with a layover here. read more

I was quite disappointed to not obtain a coveted Yelp badge when I landed. I guess I should have figured this out when I was in Berlin last year. Oh well. What does Germany have to do to get on the Yelp badge map? As the the airport, it was nice enough and very clean. It is run with typical German efficiency. However, I was pulled aside at security. My traveling companions were a bit concerned when I was taken to a side room, behind a thick closed door. I was asked to explain to security why my laptop was so heavy. Apparently, they had not seen an Alienware laptop before and did not believe it could be real. I know it's real because I've carried it around the world multiple times and it boots up fine in every time zone. Conveniently, it booted up again so they let me go on my way. Hamburg airport is pretty good in many respects; It's efficient. It's close to the city. It's pleasant. The S-bahn train into the city costs only EUR2.65. Check-in, baggage drop and security are a breeze. It's generally a stress-free experience which is pretty rare in airports. However, it does have two obvious drawbacks; 1) There is an incredibly poor selection of food (and shopping in general) available when you get gate-side of security. I had a choice between three types of croisant, three types of sandwich and two types of muffin, and that was it. 2) The building is incredibly long. My friend was told to check-in in terminal 1 for his Easyjet flight, and as I had over an hour to kill I wandered along (I also checked in at terminal 1) to find him for a chat. A mile later, I was still no-where near B28, so I gave up. Also when trying to find gate C04 it was interesting to see the gates numbered, C09, C08, C07, C05 and then C03?! Where was C04? Generally excellent, I'm knocking a star off since they managed to not load my luggage the other week and caused me no end of stress at the other end. However, considering I've flown out of here about 50 times, it's not a bad ratio. Everything else about this place is great, and they're gradually improving the food situation (there is now a half-decent sushi place). If you're flying within the Schengen zone then your plane will dock right next to the exit - it's only the UK and Swiss flights where you have to walk for a kilometre! Actually thinking of giving it the full 5 stars, since the first time I arrived here I saw a TU-154M take off, probably the most exciting airport experience I ever had! read more

The longer I live in Hamburg and the more I travel around Europe the more I appreciate departing & arriving back at Hamburg Airport. 30 mins cheap (EUR2.80) S-bahn from Stadthausbrucken in the centre of Hamburg, with the train arriving directly under the Terminal 2, its a quick hop up the escalators, shimmy through security and you are through to the gates. Loads of nice places to eat, drink and shop; everything is organised and spotless and you can walk from one end to the other in about 20 minutes: try doing that in Heathrow! Probably the nicest Airport I use and as said before always a pleasure to return to. read more

I've lived in many different cities around the world: Taipei, Paris, Singapore and Boston, and I have travelled a lot. In terms of travelling experience, Hamburg Airport is by far the best. It's only 30 min away from Hauptbahnhof via S-Bahn. It's small enough that it's not too busy, but big enough that it has good connections. Service is great and the selection of stores is good. You can also buy a Tesla if you have spare time ;-) read more

It's just average really. There ain't nothing flashy about Hamburg airport it gets you where you need to go but most of the time you will be a bit bored with the experience. There seems to be a distinct lack of decent shops or restaurants. The main ones I saw were a big Michael kors shop, bag heaven if that's your thing and you have brought your cheque book. I also found a place to have a bite to eat called pier and actually the sandwich was a really good cheese and ham number. There was also a shop selling tourist tat and some very cool St. Pauli football gear. (They also had rubbish FC Hamburg stuff - boooooooo) Wifi was poor at best. I really struggled to get on it and stay on it. The airport was clean and efficient though, but I would have preferred some bathrooms in the final gate area instead of being trapped in without one until you actually board the plane. Hamburg Airport is fantastic. The first time I was here was January 2006, and my friend and I witnessed someone cleaning the airport floor despite it being spotless. To this day, we still joke about it, and my many visits to HAM airport afterwards have resulted in the same thing - a clean, modern, spacious, light facility. It's very German - efficient, utilitarian, and it gets the job done perfectly. (1) Transport - plenty of taxis, buses and S-Bahn straight in to the city (2) Check-In - I usually fly BA, but have also flown Lufthansa and Aer Lingus from HAM. In all cases, check-in is rather quick and orderly (3) Security - Efficient, quick, orderly (yeah, it's Germany, that "orderly" word will be common) (4) Immigration - Quick, friendly, and I have even come across a few jokes being made by the immigration staff (mostly exit immigration) (5) Lounges - I have only ever visited the lounge that British Airways uses, which is an independent lounge used by many airports. Rather disappointing, with very few food or drink choices in the early morning (which is when I use it). I believe it's called the Airport Plaza lounge, but don't guarantee (let me check again when I am at the airport in a few weeks) (6) Food - there is a food court that has some decent choices at typical airport prices. That being said, it's slightly cheaper than the airport hotels nearby, so I have come here for food even if I am staying at one of those hotels (7) Viewing Deck - I love airplanes, and I love the viewing deck here. There have been times that I have stayed at HAM airport hotels (Radisson Blu or Courtyard) and have walked to the airport just to watch planes from the view deck for an hour or so. It's pre-security, so no need to have a ticket to do so So, as with most German airport, HAM is clean, efficient, orderly and nice. I love it. read more

As far as airports go, Hamburg is one of my favorites. Can you have a favorite airport? Is that a sign that your life has taken a terribly wrong path somewhere? I'll go watch "Up in the Air" now. In any case, I've flown out of here several times for intra-Europe and international flights. If I've got an electronic boarding pass (something with which European airports in general are light-years ahead of US airports), I routinely make it from arrival to gate in less than 15 minutes. It's well laid-out and, unlike most airports, doesn't make you walk through Duty Free to get to your gate. I haven't used the free WiFi much (the sponsor varies regularly), but it exists, which is already far more than most airports. The S-Bahn station right in the airport is absolutely awesome. Hamburg is one of the few airports where I can be in a meeting at the office around 30 minutes after landing. Staff is helpful with that stereotypical cold German hospitality. Lufthansa staff is probably the worst here, Air France the best. Then again, I've generally flown out of here at 6am when I'm probably the only person in a 25-mile radius to be chipper. Pro tip: if you arrive on a Sunday, when everything in town is closed, stop by the Edeka in the airport to pick up a few essentials. I know of very few airports that have a supermarket in them. read more

Free wifi, good layout, short walks to most gates, efficient security system, fast connection to town as the S-Bahn stops right in the airport. As far as airports go, it's a really good one! There are tons of different food options as well, from take-away packaged sandwiches to freshly prepared quality meals. Several of the cafés and restaurants even have great views of the runways. The luggage system is also one of the fastest I've experienced. By the time I walked through the automatic passport gates (biometric passports only) and strolled down to the luggage belt, the belt already moved and my bag was the second to come out! Hamburg was a functional regional airport. Security and border control were fast enough. I didn't think much of the shops. There were only a handful of places to eat or shop. To be fair, I like the wide variety of choices for kids toys at the one shop, but there were only 2 or 3 shops to begin with. As for food, well, vegetarians always struggle in Germany. Cheese sandwich on baguette. Meh. WiFi is free for one hour, but did some weird things. I had to connect to my corporate VPN in order to leave this review. Weird things were happening. They certainly speak more English here than we speak German in the US and UK airports. Thanks for that. read more

HAM (now renamed to Helmut Schmidt airport) is our real " airgate" to the world. It's a city airport with shirt ways and great connection (by car, bus and train) although it's outside the city. Modern with all the restaurants, shops and hotels. Yes, Starbucks and Sushi is there as well close to exit T2. If there is anything to improve than more direct connections to the world. However it's up to the airlines rather the airport. In Hamburg sagt man Tschüß, es heisst Auf Wiedersehen.....! read more

The Hamburg Airport is generally hassle-free and comfortable to fly to and from, but wholly inefficient when it comes to security. After checking in my luggage (it doesn't go through x-ray before check-in!!!), I schlep myself through the first round of on-board baggage security. After that's through, I get to walk down to the gate, which brings me through another round of on-board baggage security - where they check the same bag they checked 15 minutes prior and pat me down AGAIN. Added security when flying to Israel is always a good idea, but Hamburg Airport seem to not be able to figure out how to do it. If I haven't got explosives in my bra the first time around, I'm not going to have explosives in my bra 15 minutes later and for heaven's sake, X-ray the luggage and ask passengers security questions! I don't feel safe flying to Israel from here at all, but it's cheaper and direct. read more

Nice airport just 30 minutes by train (which costs 2EUR, i.e. 16EUR less than the buggery that is the Heathrow Express) from Central Hamburg. Not a huge deal of shopping on offer, but plenty of places to get some food, and lots of seating. The airport is super quiet (quieter than some libraries I've been to..) and typically efficient. The only advice I can add is that don't go through to the gate until absolutely necessary, because once you are through to the gate, you can't get out again, and there are limited options for eating and drinking. read more

My only problem with Hamburg airport is that it is too small and it doesnt have any direct flight to my home country. Hamburg airport is actually so small, that on the UEFA cup final game day... ALL flights had between 2 to 5 hours delay (one flight even had an indefinite delay) hence i missed my connecting flight in prague, and got stuck there for 24h, and took the next connecting flight. Otherwise... it's clean, not far from the city center, food is expensive. Don't exchange money there, the rates are very unfair for the 'tourist' oh and don't forget to do your tax free there ! read more

Opens, spacious, airy and uncrowded and a really fast throughput of passengers at bag search. If you can deliver that, as Hamburg Airport does very well, then everything else is secondary. On the secondary factors, Hamburg Airport also scores decently - a good choice of food in the central (upper) plaza area, compensates for the average snack bar facilities elsewhere. The shopping isn't great, but unlike many, that really isn't the reason I go to an airport. My only quibble, as often with German airports, is that by comparison with the open spacious main concourses, the lounges can be small and overcrowded - sort of defeating their purpose. read more

I love this airport! It's easy to get around, there are loads of little shops and stalls (though a bit expensive) and little eateries a-plenty. It is modern, clean and fancy looking. One word of warning though, the airport is incredibly long and don't leave leave getting to your gate until the last minute! I've been caught out a few times! read more

Great airport when you fly in from London Luton you appreciate the impressive efficiency of this well run airport. There's small bar areas at each departure gate, ample shopping, and good transport links. We got through passport control in about 1 minute, as opposed to the half an hour wait both ways at Luton end! Even my American colleague got through reasonably quickly on a non-EU passport. The Air France airline is poorly staffed at the Hamburg airport. Most of them were unhelpful, when we could find someone. The security staff were also rude. Made for a very frustrating and stressful airport experience. Come on ya'll! We are paying for these services. read more

This is regarding my experience in Hamburg airport on 16/10/21. We had a flight to Amsterdam at 6:10 am. We arrived more than 2 hrs before our flight. It took us more than 45 mins just to check in our bags! Heading to the security check line, we were shocked how the massive line kept going. I've never seen anything like this before! It made the Hajj at Mecca look like a small gathering! Then, the boarding pass I was given wouldn't let me go through the automatic door. At this point, I was separated from my partner. We tried to signal to the only service member we could see, and he said to go to his other colleague. So I left the line, and went to the other colleague as directed. I said "Entschuldigung, Entschuldigung!" but he kept ignoring me. I then asked "Sir, can you please help me?" and he said "No!" and walked away! I was in complete disbelief. Is this really happening?! I said "I need your help!" He then turned toward me and spoke angrily in German, and motioned me to get back to the end of the line! He was scary and mean. My heart sank. I was separated from my partner and I was going to miss my flight. I had paid for services, followed the rules and trusted in the German rule of conduct, but I was now powerless & alone. And the airport staff who were supposed to help the customers, not only were they unavailable, they were rude and without grace. I tried to get help from 2 other staff, and to explain to them that my pass wasn't working and that I was going to miss my flight if they didn't help me, and they all just shrugged their shoulders and said to get back in line. No one said "I'm sorry" or any form of smile or support. Not only were they unprofessional, they didn't even operate on a human level. So unkind. They should be fired. I finally got threw the security line, without help from any of the staff. I ran as fast to the plane and boarded at the last minute. I cried. I have never been treated with such disregard before. Clean and good German efficiency. No need to wait 45 minutes for you luggage and 45 minutes waiting to go through immigration. Walk off your flight, walk to immigration, wait maybe 15 minutes if that much, walk outside to baggage claim and your bags are there. Walk outside for a taxi and no lines, get in the taxi and off you go! Hamburg is both modern and historical and clean. Visit to enjoy it all! read more
