It is right off the busy SR 20 tucked away on a quiet hillside. A huge row of Panax trees blocks the cemetery from the road providing some peace for the dead and the living. It was a dry landscape in the middle of summer but that didn't change the lovely memorials that were rife with animals adorning the memorials, animal scupltures, cherubs and other tender endearments left by the living for the dead. The photos are not in order for this review (thanks, Yelp - Click on "See all photos from Kaliko P. for Fernhill Cemetery" link on the bottom and not the pics themselves). The memorial that stood out belonged to Terri Williams. Although I never met her, I could almost see her life in the memorial that stood before me and her husband's total love for his wife with a title of a song on the tombstone from the group Journey "Forever Yours Faithfully". Her Fidalgo Elementary school ID sits at her grave as does her grandkid's toys and a bench right across so her family can visit. It was so touching I shed a few tears for a woman I never met but could almost touch, just by looking at the remnants of her life left here by her family. She must have been truly remarkable and totally loved. Not only people were remembered tenderly, but so were pets, indirectly. Most of the stones in this memorial park had animals on them. Dogs, mainly, but also etchings of cats on stones and sculptures of seals. Fernhill Cemetery is one of the more interesting places I've visited and it was definitely touching.

Our request for an explanation, from Hawthorne management, for the reason that this situation still continues, is that the supplier of the brass items is not able to provide the items within a stated timeframe. Meanwhile our family and friends, who wish to pay tribute to him, will find only a label tape with his identification marking his final resting place. Closure includes more than an obituary, inurnment, or a memorial. For our family it's also visiting a loved one's gravesite.

It was a relatively short drive from Lynden, WA where we lived. Sis and I visited the cemetery about a year before she died in Sept. 2020, after a ten year battle with cancer. Her husband and I carried out her wish to be buried sans casket. I had my name and info put on the large rock that is her headstone because I planned to have half of my cremated remains put in with my twin's and half with my late husband's which are in the water off of Anacortes, WA. This area they call "The Meadow" isn't a meadow. It is infested with Poison Hemlock, Himalayan Blackberry, native but invasive Bracken Fern, and Common Tansy. Some graves have been completely grown over by these poisonous, noxious, toxic, and/or invasive weeds and the area does NOT look like a meadow with grass and wildflowers blowing in the breeze. I am a WSU-trained Master Gardener so prepared lots of information for the groundskeepers and owner of this cemetery to help them know what to do to get control of the weeds in this area. I first sent this information to them in 2022. The most that was ever done (that I saw) was the stand of Poison Hemlock was mowed down once. In exhasperation, I turned them into the Washington State Weed Board who said they wrote the owner a letter about the Poison Hemlock. Then, as if that wasn't bad enough, the road (more like a "car path") into The Meadow was closed to vehicles. They do NO watering in this area (which I was aware of prior to buying the plot) so in order to keep the one Red Flowering Currant and 3 Rugosa Roses alive at my sister's grave I had to pull a buggy to haul water way to her grave in the back. Water weighs over 8 pounds a gallon so by the time I was finished I was sweaty and mad! I am over 71 years old and still pretty fit but what about really old people who just want to visit their loved one's grave? That is a long way to walk to the back of The Meadow and especially on a hot or a cold day! I have tried repeatedly to get an appointment with the owner and was offered one date over a week ago but I couldn't meet on that date because I was going to be in Canada all day. I offered 3 other dates I would be available but have not heard back at all. So now I am writing reviews. Every word of this is true so I have no concern about being sued for libel. I wish I could dig up my twin sister's bones and move them out of that cemetery but their information given to prospective buyers specifically states that disinterment is not an option due to the nature of the burials (no casket). As a trained Master Gardener I do NOT want my remains put in what I view to be a giant weed patch!! I paid for this burial plot and with all charges added in, it cost me almost $10,000. (My brother-in-law paid for other charges having to do with services other than the burial plot.) A portion of that was for "perpetual care" of the cemetery but the only thing they ever do out there is mow paths once in a while so people can see to get to the graves. I am sure they would love for me to just go away, and I would love to, but I can't. I cannot leave my much-loved identical twin sister's grave like that. Another lady I met recently whose loved one is buried in The Meadow is also very distressed and called The Meadow "ugly." Since she couldn't drive back there, she used a garden cart to haul tools to her loved one's grave to tend to it. And another woman whose mother-in-law was buried there saw my post on a local Facebook group and said her mom's grave looked like a compost pile so I offered to tidy it up for her since she lives in Texas. I could go on and on but already have. It makes me want to cry that this is the situation we are in. My next move will be to look up the obituaries of every person buried in The Meadow and to contact their next of kin to see if they are happy with their situation. Maybe if there are more of us voicing our discontent then this area will get some very much-needed attention.

We immediately felt comfortable talking to her somehow.. maybe because we expected someone along the lines of a used care salesman but Heather was very genuine and admitted to us that she was somewhat new in her position there. We were very pleasantly surprised! There is a lot of information to consider and she walked us through all of it. The actual location is park-like with many themed areas and gardens. We were able to figure out much of it in just the one meeting. We also spent some time walking around and looking at the different areas. Very lovely place.. a fantastic place to take a walk and we saw many people walking their dogs. The prices are much higher than we expected but more of a reason to pre-plan so the burden is not on the ones left.
