Even though we had a large party of about 30 painters, the instructors, Anna, came around and helped me several times, even showing me what I needed to do and offering feedback. She was supportive and helpful. Despite my dreadful painting, I LOVED my experience with Art with Anna. I especially loved that the money raised went to support cancer research at the James.

I haven't been to a place like this since I was a kid, so I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I liked that in addition to lots of paint colors there other ways to enhance your item - stamps, tape, stencils, etc. The staff member gave just the right amount of help - she was always there to answer questions when we had them but also gave us plenty of freedom to play around with everything. We ended up staying for almost two hours and had such a great time. I will absolutely be adding this to my list of places to take out of town guests, and I can't wait to pick up our finished items!

There are date night classes for two and a one time sampler class. Plus, if you've already been to a class there's the option to book an open studio. Which is a spot to come and create. You can also rent out the studio for small groups. I booked my wife a one off Sunday class. Unfortunately, something came up and she was unable to attend so I went in her space. I am glad that I went it was a delightful way to spend a Sunday! The try-it class fee includes one fired & glazed finished piece. (There is the option to purchase other creations as well.) The instructor for the one off Sunday class was great. They explained and showed the process we would take before giving us space to create at our own stations. The showing was great for me as I am the type of person who learns by doing so being able to see the wheel in action, see the movements that change the shape of the clay, and the tools that were going to be used set me up for success when it comes to (attempting) to create on the wheel. Each station had a wheel, many sections of pre-cut ready to be thrown clay, water, tools that could be used, and a posted reminder of the process of creation. (I appreciated this as it gave me something to refer to as I was attempting to create a masterpiece!) During the class time the instructor was walking about offering help, and sharing tips to aid in the creation of our pieces. After creation, you help clean up your station, and choose the glaze color for your creation. Glaze options were blue, green, and red. At the time of this class the turn around time from creation to glazed, fired, and ready to be picked up was four weeks from the class date. ------ Previous to this class I hadn't used a wheel in well over 25 years. (And that was only once or twice in art classes in elementary and middle! So nothing that would give me considerable skills.) I am planning on booking one of the couple classes so that the wife and I can create together. All in all, I highly recommend checking out the offerings at Bareclay and booking a class if you are able! Nice space to try out something new or to get back into something you enjoyed in a comfortable and friendly environment.

The only reason I am giving this review two stars instead of one is because Jess made up for some…read moreof Linda's bad customer service. So, here's what happened. I have two pictures that were pre-matted from many years ago. I love them both, and unfortunately the one is a very delicate collage- hence I want to get it framed so it doesn't deteriorate further. When I came into the store, Linda was the one that greeted me. Given the size of the pictures, she immediately went to the $65 poster special. Unfortunately, the frames are only black, silver, and gold, and I wasn't sure what I wanted.... after 5 minutes. She was very snippy with me on several accounts. When she first saw the pictures she said the $65 because she obviously didn't think I could afford or pay for it something else. Actually, her exact words were " It's not worth it for you to frame these." Well, since I walked into your store -it is worth it to me. She was very judgmental about the one that was a collage. I had mentioned that I did them in high school, and I recognize that I look young -but I'm almost 40. She clearly thought I was a college kid that couldn't afford to be in the shop. But, frankly, even if I was- her judgement is not needed or appropriate. So, I was already a bit annoyed because she made that comment within about 40 seconds of me walking into the store. Since the matting I had used originally was very old I was also considering new matting (she was also snippy about those prices). She immediately pulled out a grey color and said this one. I said I like it, but I can't go with Grey because of the color scheme of my house. I would like to look at white or cream. "Well, white doesn't look good on pictures -I don't know what you want." Wow. Linda -it's been two minutes, and I told you I wanted to look at white. The tension basically escalated from there. Then she told me that the white fabric matting was too expensive for me and I could only get the black, gold, or silver. Well frankly, I didn't like any of them. So, I asked about the other 200+ frames in the store that was not the black, gold, and silver she pulled out. She snipped again. "Well I can't go through every one of these and tell you how much they cost. I have to get back to work. I have too much to do." I hate to break it to you -but I AM your work. I should have just walked out right there and frankly, I wish I had but I didn't feel like driving to another framing store. So I said, "Let me look around and when I decide what I want I'll come get you. That way you can do back to work." Then, ironically she didn't leave. "I need for you to decide, I can't wait here all day." So I said, "I'm not asking you to wait for me, I said I wanted to look around." "You'll have to make up your mind." "I hear that, I would like to look around and I'll come find you when I decided what I want." This whole interaction happened in less than five minutes and it was very bizarre. I have never had to ask to look around a store before - that's the point of walking into a store. Anyway, about another 5 minutes later, I made my decision - and it was not the poster special. She took the order was still a bit snippy. But I ignored her. We talked about the back of the frame for the collage. I said that I needed to be able to access it because it was delicate. She said that they could not screw it and use the pin things that keep it in place instead. I said, ok that sounds good, just as long as I can access it. Before she took the picture, I asked her to hold it horizontally because it was delicate -naturally she didn't. I said "Wait be careful." She said "no it's fine, I'm not going to look anything." Well, yeah that didn't happen. So, a week later I pick up the order and there were two people there -Linda and Jess. Jess was helping me and Linda walked over and said " It's fine you don't need to look at the picture." Didn't even say hi, was not the one helping me. Well, actually I do need to look at the picture because if something's not right -and it wasn't right, I wanted it taken care of before I took it home. So naturally, several things were wrong. my original matting was sliced and the backing that they put in the frame didn't even fit correctly. Frankly my highschool matting job was more professional than what they did. On top of my matte being sliced, they removed my original backing (a piece of paper) and cut out where I had signed it and glued it on that bad backing board. Third problem- part of the collage was missing. Forth Problem -they double-sided taped it to my matte! I was so clear about that I needed to access the picture -Why wouldn't you tell me that you'd cut up my picture and tape on a new Board!? Only thing Linda said was "Wasn't me" and walked away. Jess at least had the sense to ask "what can I do to make it better?" They did replace the mat- correctly within an hour, but I still wanted the original paper and Linda made it an overall bad experience.

I dig ceramics, and thus, I dig Columbus Clay…read more Columbus Clay in my opinion is one of the only places in Columbus where you can find most any thing imaginable you'll need for your ceramics endeavors without having to visit multiple stores and waste gas. I am a fan that they carry multiple bodies of clay, and they also carry multiple ceramic slips, stains, glazes, tools, and most anything your potters heart could desire. The guys that work here can sometimes seem rough around the edges, but their humor will sometimes lighten the mood. Appearances are deceiving about this place. I figured it would have a slightly larger sales floor than it has, but when you walk in the door, there's some random things sitting around... mostly raw materials, and glaze test tiles, and boards adorn the walls. You walk up to a showcase/desk where you are usually greeted in a salty tone. You get a vibe of "What do you want?", but that doesn't deter me, because like I said, these guys warm up to you eventually, but I would recommend that you know what you are going to buy before you venture in, because this is NOT a shopper friendly sales floor, and while some of the guys who work here sort of know the odds and ends about ceramics, there are others who are clueless and probably only work there, because it is a partial warehouse. I would recommend checking out their website and looking at their product, making a list, and taking it with you, because you will forget quickly. It's happened multiple times, and then you stand there like some kind of buffoon with temporary brain fart until after you're in the car driving home, then do you realize, "DAMMIT, I needed some pyrometric cones!!!" Columbus Clay gives student discounts, which is a plus, and they have been nice enough to take my orders via e-mail and over the phone, so my husband can stop by and pick up my supplies. I don't like Columbus Clay's hours. No weekend hours!? Come on guys!? I have to work a Mon-Fri 9-5 day job to support my 2nd job of ceramics. The least you could do is accommodate?

I could kill Gwen for stealing my FTR! We were at this damn thing together, and I had a life to go…read morelive while she ran home and stole it! Thievery! Okay, that last part was a bit harsh. But I was genuinely bummed. As the Cbus Yelp scene grows, it gets harder to find new places. CS Gallery was a bit of a surprise. I knew that a number of shops had been opening surrounding the little strip of Parsons that you'd be lying if you didn't contribute to Carabar opening up on the street five years ago or however long it's been. Back then there were maybe two other shops on this strip, excluding AWOL and Black Creek. But what I didn't expect to find was art that actually appealed to me. Not that I didn't think it could happen, or didn't think I would find such a thing at CS, but more that I have been to a large number of the galleries in the Short North and I hate about all of them. I actually enjoyed my evening at CS though. That was the surprise. They had free food, beer, and wine set up in a room off to the side, and the main room plus a back room filled wall to wall with art from regional artists (east coast and midwest mostly). They were having a contest for the best picture, but I didn't catch the winner. I saw two people I knew quite unexpectedly, one a retired philosophy professor from my alma mater, another from work. And of course the company of my friends Frankie and Gwen. What a fun time!

These little lovelies are hand-bound sheets of handmade paper, and often covered with scraps of leather or other durable, interesting materials. There are sweet little notecards, sheets of textured paper, and prints on the walls. The owner, Daniel Colvin, also specializes in calligraphy. He can hand-make your wedding invitations, or any other special invitation, book, or paper product that you need. Have you seen movies about long ago, where a count or king or Dracula seals his letter with sealing wax, then stamps it with a special insignia? You can buy these kinds of stamps and sticks of wax here too- I thought those were really cool. Be like Dracula and buy your insignia here, then send off your creepy letters on handmade paper. Sounds fun, doesn't it?
