I absolutely love Hammer's. I live in Chicago but every time I come back to visit my family I ALWAYS go to Hammer's. This visit I added a beautiful bracelet and necklace to my collection. My husband always finds something. Most definitely worth the visit. read more

History

Established in 1942.

In 1942, A.B. Hammer, Sr. opened the first Hammer's in Guntersville, Alabama. His eldest daughter, Helen was at the University Of Alabama and in 1945, married Herbert V. Kern. Herb had enlisted in the US Army Air Force and attended Presbyterian College while awaiting deployment. Just days after their wedding, he shipped to the Pacific and flew on B-29s for the remainder of WWII. After the war, he returned and began work with Helen's father in Guntersville. In 1947, Herb & Helen moved to Haleyville, Alabama to open the second Hammer's store. It was only a year before they moved again to open Hammer's Scottsboro in March, 1948. Since then, more stores have been opened in Alabama and Tennessee. Today all 10 are operated by 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation family members. Herb passed in 2014, but Helen Kern & staff still operate Hammer's in Scottsboro with its "creaky" wooden floors throughout. It is now the longest continuously operating store in the Hammer's chain.
