Overall the NC DMV Driver License Offices are jacked up and in serious need of overhauling and/or…read morefunding. Long wait times, difficulty making appointments, etc. are common complaints. This review is specific to the Mocksville location. Three months ago I got lucky and was able to make a schedule an appointment at this office. You can make an appointment online for the morning hours. The afternoon hours are for walk-ins only. Trust me on this. Schedule your appointment way in advance from when you need it. If the online reservation site shows no slots, keep looking until you find one. If you try the walk in method, you will find long lines and long wait times. Talking hours to wait. When I got there at 9:00 AM, there were probably 20 people waiting, and only 2 DMV workers. I went to the window and told them I had an appointment. I was quickly ushered in. The process to get my real ID took 5 minutes. The worker taking care of me was very efficient, fast, and professional. I was very impressed with the service, and very glad I got an appointment slot.

Over the years this place has improved significantly, so 4 stars stacked against other towns of its size. Info - Population about 5,300 - County seat for Davie County - Lots of rural areas outside the town - Right off I40 - Part of the Piedmont Triad - Daniel Boone lived here at one time and his parents are buried here Pros - Convenient to Winston-Salem, Statesville, Salisbury and Lexington - Great place to live while working in WS. 20 - 25 minute drive. - I40 access - High speed Internet available - Nice historic downtown with local restaurants (serving booze), shops, and other places - The north side by I40 has Lowes, Super Wal-Mart, fast food and other shops - ABC store now in town - Decent selection of restaurants all over - Real Estate prices are better here than closer to WS, but trending up Cons - Not a lot of public parks but getting better - Food delivery options are basically pizza, with Grubhub and Uber Eats offering only about 1/2 dozen options - Forget about getting an Uber or cab here. - The south side is a work in progress. A new park is there to help the economic developing in the south but COVID has been a damper on that.

That all being said -- this place is a historical landmark for Winston Salem and humanity as a whole. It was the home of writer/actress/director/activist Dr. Maya Angelou from 1994 until her death in 2014, when she passed away inside this home. Dr. Angelou once wrote a lovely little essay called "In the Valley of Humility" (published in the collection "Letter to My Daughter") about how and why she decided to make Winston-Salem her home. She decided on Winston-Salem in part because of the warmth and kindness she felt from the community at Wake Forest University, and decided to accept the position of lifetime Reynolds Professorship of American Studies there in 1981. This came after a divorce when she was looking for a "soft place to land". Anyone who has spent time in the Wake Forest part of Winston-Salem can certainly understand the appeal for her in that moment. Whenever I feel the need for a spiritual moment or reset, I like to quietly drive by her former home on Bartram. I take in the trees, how green and peaceful everything is. I pull out of the neighborhood and drive the few minutes down to the Wake Forest campus -- the same drive that Dr. Angelou likely made when she was heading over to speak or teach. It's really easy to understand why she picked Winston-Salem as her haven. Whenever I have visitors in from out of town, this is one of the first places I recommend that they visit. She may not live there anymore, and the house may now be painted deep blue instead of sunshine yellow, but driving by this house and down these streets -- especially after reading "In the Valley of Humility" -- allows so much in-depth insight into the day-to-day existence of one of the most cherished Southern writers of our time.

This is marker number J-52 and it was erected in 1971 by the North Carolina State Department of Archives and History. There is more information online. William Cyrus Briggs, born in 1861 in Turner, Maine, was a pioneering inventor whose cigarette-making machines revolutionized tobacco production and helped companies like R. J. Reynolds compete with industry leaders. After selling his patents to the Murai Brothers in Japan, he continued innovating with the United Cigarette Machine Company, designing even faster machinery. His inventive spirit extended beyond tobacco, as he also created a stamp vending machine and the first return carriage for a typewriter, leaving a lasting mark on early office technology before his death in 1918.
