Hanabusa IVF - My 2 years old son - Fertility Near Me - San Diego, California

The clinic demonstrated several issues with communication, coordination, and patient experience throughout the fertility evaluation process. The overall experience at the clinic felt disorganized and inconsistent. There were multiple instances where important procedural information was either not communicated or communicated too late - including preparation requirements for the HSG procedure, which resulted in an unnecessary one-month delay. There were also inconsistencies in testing protocols and situations where prior imaging/history did not appear to be reviewed before appointments. The most concerning experience occurred during an attempted saline sonogram (SIS), where the procedure could not be completed after multiple unsuccessful attempts. During the appointment, comments were repeatedly made suggesting I was uncomfortable or did not want to continue, despite my clearly indicating that I was willing to proceed. The appointment was then paused, and I later learned the physician had returned to another operating room before my procedure was resolved or properly discussed. We ultimately left the clinic without speaking further with the physician, receiving guidance on next steps, or discussing rescheduling options. There was also no follow-up communication afterward regarding the incomplete procedure. We actually never heard back from them. Overall, the experience left the impression that patient concerns and continuity of care were not being prioritized. Dr. LeBlanc came across as dismissive and lacking in bedside manner, and the interactions did not feel supportive, attentive, or patient-centered during what is already a highly stressful and emotional process. Reviews are highly subjective based on success, but the process should have been much smoother. Dr. Chang seemed fine enough, but his staff made an already stressful process even worse. It felt like a chaotic money grab. In the last few calls, I was literally playing a game of telephone with the nurse coordinator through the poor receptionist. It was so ridiculous, as if the nurse coordinator didn't want to answer my questions on medication doses and then relayed incorrect information for the receptionist to tell me in one phone call. I should have trusted my instincts from the very beginning. My first interaction with Diana was uncomfortable -- her attitude was rude and dismissive. I initially didn't go with the clinic because of her and should have stuck to that instinct . That alone should have been my sign to stop the process. Unfortunately, I continued -- and I deeply regret it. I had more than one follicle, yet only one egg was retrieved, and that egg was over-mature. The other two follicles could not be retrieved at all. If my egg was already too large or over-mature, and the others were not retrievable, I don't understand why I was allowed to proceed with retrieval in the first place. This process is emotionally, physically, and financially exhausting. Patients deserve honesty and transparency. I feel completely ripped off and extremely disappointed. This clinic advertises very well, but my experience did not reflect that image. There was a lack of clear communication and realistic expectations, and I was left devastated by the outcome. If you are traveling from outside San Diego, I strongly advise reconsidering. This clinic was not worth the time, money, or emotional investment for me. I had the absolute worst experience with Hanabusa. From start to finish, the level of care and communication has been far below any reasonable standard. I went in this morning for ultrasound and bloodwork - all done by a nurse and a technician (I've never met Dr. Chang aside from the initial video consult). No one explained the treatment plan, just said Dr. Chang would review results later. Around 4pm, I finally got a message in the patient portal outlining four complicated "options" as the next step. Two of the options required urgent medications, including a trigger shot. Yet no one bothered to call me to let me know I needed to pick up the medication WITHIN AN HOUR before the pharmacy closed. (The message came at 4pm, but the pharmacy they sent the prescription to closed at 5pm.) Even if I had seen it right away (which I couldn't, because I was at work), there was absolutely no way the pharmacy could have filled it in time. On top of that, no nurse called me with instructions on how to administer the trigger shot. One of the "options" Dr. Chang gave was basically, 'oh well, we'll just try again next cycle.' This is beyond disrespectful. IVF is not only expensive -- it's emotionally draining. To waste an entire cycle because of the clinic's lack of basic communication is unacceptable. And let's not forget -- this clinic takes no insurance. It's an all-cash business. Every visit is $500 out of pocket. For that amount of money, this is absolutely not the level of care or respect I deserve. Hanabusa operates as if patients have nothing else to do but stare at their portal all day, ready to drop everything to chase down meds, and as if patients already know how to handle complex treatments without instruction. This is not patient-centered care. It's careless, dismissive, and shows zero respect for a patient's time, effort, or emotional well-being. Please reconsider before going here. I've been meaning to do a review for a long while now, but I've been busy with a son! We did a lot of research before going to Dr. Chang. We have insurance, and we could have gone with one of the IVF doctors within network, but we couldn't find anyone with a good review. Most of the within network reviews mentioned how great the doctors were, but once they received the money, or some of the payment, their services changed drastically. The services declined either came directly from the doctors or the staff, or both. Hence, we settled for Dr. Chang here. Mind you, if we've gone with the IVF doctors within network it would have been about 50% off. However, we settled for Dr. Chang due to the great reviews - it was a risk as well because the reviews for him could have been fake. However, we had to make a decision based on the data that we had. And for this we had to do a full private pay with Dr. Chang because they do not take our insurance. We did not regret this decision at all though because did I mention we are so busy with a son now - because it was a successful IVF! Due to us approaching to an undesirable age, with some medical conditions, and with several years of trying without success, we needed to do an IVF before it's too late; it was kind of a last resort. I'm sure those who are thinking of IVF are in similar situation and what not. Dr. Chang is knowledgeable and approachable. He tells you things as they are, and are not pushy or trying to make you spend more money than necessary. He will lay out the details and it's up to you to make an informed decision. Dr. Chang will explain every step of the procedure as he performs it; this is somewhat rare nowadays if you haven't notice. For example, he will say first I will do this, this is what you will feel, and if you feel it differently then please let me know. It seems from the beginning our doctor had a defeated attitude. On my first ultrasound she told me she was "disappointed with what she saw". Really? YOU'RE disappointed?? IVF is very challenging and a defeated attitude from the get-go, when you are trying to create life doesn't serve anyone. As a mental health clinician I understand how important the mindset is, not to mention what you say. Then there was our nurse- Andrea. She was awful. No patience and she seemed to get frustrated whenever we had additional questions. For example, for our first round we had a in-person demo of how to administer the meds, as well as a video link and written instructions to refer back to- very helpful! For the second round (with new meds added) we only got an invalid video link with written instructions. We wanted at least a visual example of how to administer the meds. They're expensive, wanted to make sure we were doing them correctly! However, upon reaching out for additional support- we got nothing but attitude. "I sent written instructions!" Okay we can see that, obviously- and we would like a visual example-which is why we are reaching out. Then she refers me back to the invalid video link, so of course I tried to browse the invalid link. Again we reach out and finally she sends a valid link. It felt like pulling teeth to get assistance. Then we made a mistake administering one of our meds. Once I realized I reached out, worried we had messed up the dosage. Called the front desk- they were wonderful-patient and understanding with our concern after explaining and assured me they'd have our nurse contact us. Upon receiving a return call, I explained to Andrea "I'm not sure if the front desk explained the situation?" (In an effort to save time and not re-explain) she responded with "Um no but if you want-I can hang up with you, go talk to the front desk and then call you back!" And it wasn't in a nice way. After already being stressed about administering the meds wrong we get her condescending attitude. People have bad days. But time and time again this seemed to be a theme with our nurse. All the other nurses we experienced were wonderful. After explaining the situation to the office manager Karen and expressing that we were uncomfortable continuing with Andrea we requested to change nurses. Karen refused and kept making excuses saying "oh that's just Andrea's personality" And never once apologized. This was our experience. Then they charged us for an unused "calcium bath" that was to be used for the 2nd round Egg Retrieval, which we decided to forgo, due to the fact that there was only 1 mature follicle. We called and explained our concerns. Karen was somewhat receptive, but also tried to sway us "you know it only takes one, that could be the one!" We were concerned because for the first round they were able to retrieve 6 follicles, this round it looked like only 1 would be mature. We requested an additional monitoring and got in that Saturday with Dr Chang. He was great! Very straightforward. He gave us options and shared it was "reasonable" to be concerned and not wanting to proceed with the retrieval for this round. They gave us three options to proceed: 1) timed intercourse, 2) IUI, 3) IVF and we were instructed to let them know once I ovulated/what we decided. Meanwhile the following week we had been billed by Effie in billing- for an unused calcium bath. She explained they ordered after we had called and it was specially formulated. I asked her to remove the charge and she said she'd have to talk to her supervisor and get back to me. This was on a Monday. So we waited for an answer in regard to removing the charge. Friday when I ovulated and contacted them via the portal like we always did for our next steps, instead of getting a response for the next steps in our pregnancy plan, we get this message from Effie "I will suspend service until balance is clear" really? This woman has just hijacked our plan for $300-400?? That the last time I checked, you were waiting to hear back from your supervisor regarding removing the charge? This is how we get our answer? You hijacking our pregnancy plan? How is that ethical? At that point we had already dropped $13-15k and our balance was always paid within a week/week and half. Not only that- I'd overhead other patients in office, and they'd just shrug it off. One lady had over $2k balance and I overheard her say "I'll pay it next time". So here we are being harassed for a $300-400 med that was unused, meanwhile some patients get the benefit of the doubt- "to pay later" so I've witnessed first-hand. Where's the consistency? Where's the professionalism? This is something the business could've easily written off. We were treated poorly. We just expected more. After reading all of the great reviews we were so disappointed with our experience. We left. We never got a response or an apology for anything either. We were just a number to them $$. read more

If you were given no hope at your previous IVF office or were told that you are too old to have kids then I would highly recommend Hanabusa IVF. I came to this clinic after failing 8 rounds of iui and 3 rounds of IVF with fresh transfers at my local IVF clinic. I was told donor eggs was my only hope to have children. I'm a last ditch hope I found Hanabusa IVF because they specialized in women of late maternal age and those with low amh. I made an appointment with Dr. LeBlanc and decided to trust her completely. I did a year of embryo banking with PGTA testing before doing my first FET. I didn't have very much hope that anything would work nut low and behold I got the call that I was pregnant from my first FET. It worked! The process worked and now I have a beautiful baby girl. Of course you want to go somewhere where you will have success but equally important are staff that are nice and understanding as well as a physician that includes you in this process. I found all of this at Hanabusa and so much more. The care that they provide is amazing and top notch. I found the pricing to be fair and rather economical compared to other clinics. I would definitely recommend that you book a consultation and see if it is a good fit for you. I will be going back at the end of the year to start trying again for baby #2. Oh yeah I forgot to say that I did everything not even living in California. Driving from LA to San Diego for IVF treatment is not easy, but it worths the drive with Hanabusa IVF. I have been trying to get pregnant for almost 8 years and had several round of IUI & IVF cycles at different clinics in OC and had no luck. Finally I found Dr Chang through Asian Egg Bank and so happy to make decision for my embryo transfer right after my first consultation with him. Dr Chang is a great Doctor! Because I had 2 failed IVF transfer at different clinics. He is straightforward and clear with plans and treatments before transfer. He wants to make sure every single step needed and clean the uterus before putting the precious embryo. The Hanabusa system is wonderful! They are so professional with the appointment bookings and detailed instructions from Dr. Chang and nurses. I can send messages through my portal and they replied super fast. Even holiday and weekend I call to refill my drugs and I get assistant right away. Everyone is very nice from front desk, blood draw technicians, ultrasound tech and nurses (mine is nurse Ai, she is very sweet). I have retro uterus so the transfer maybe a bit more difficult than others, but with Dr Chang's Skills, the process was so smooth and no pain nor discomfort. After two failed IVF cycles at another clinic we were excited to join Hanabusa. There was a lot of good feedback online and we had a good initial consultation with Dr. Chang. He is very data driven. I would say his style of communication is very stream of consciousness. He provides lots of his thoughts and seems to consider things from multiple angles/hypothesis. We were also excited that he would let us start a cycle naturally without any estrace or birth control. With my prior two failed cycles being higher doses of meds we were excited to see what a lower dose cycle would produce. On a positive note all the staff I interacted with in the office were all courteous and friendly. Where things were really unacceptable to me was their communication. I did have to have 3 blood tests before I started injections due to not optimal hormone levels. We did 4 nights of injections and then I went in for another ultrasound and blood work. The doctor's review the results and the nursing staff is supposed to contact you by 4pm with the update for the day. When the results didn't arrive, I sent a portal message to their office at 4:17 pm and then had to call at 5pm to request updated instructions from their after hours answering service. We received updated instructions through the portal at 5:18pm. These updated instructions provided advice to skip this cycle as well as advice on how to maximize chances for success this cycle if we wanted to move forward. Since they were not sent to us until well after the office was closed for the day, we had no opportunity to ask questions. We were forced to decide on our own with limited information whether to inject hundreds of dollars of medications before being able to speak to anyone at the office. This is extremely frustrating and does not meet my expectations for communication. I can see the portal being a good path for communication for simple things like medication dosage changes but the message we received about possibly cancelling our cycle was significantly more complicated and very hard to process on our own. Our assigned nurse said she was out sick that day, our results didn't get reviewed by Dr. Chang until late in the day and that she tried to call us to discuss but the call wouldn't go through to my phone (even though she said it was working for other people). This felt very invalidating of our experience and seemed to try to place the blame on my phone. I mentioned that she could have sent me a portal message if she was having trouble reaching me but that was not done. We felt forced into making a decision without sufficient information to do so. In the portal it was said that doing another cycle would give us more "predictable results" however when I finally spoke to our nurse on the phone she said that's not what they meant to say. She also confirmed that they cannot guarantee that you can get same day feedback from the doctor on any questions about your cycle due to their internal processes. In older reviews for the office people raved about getting to see the doctors at each ultrasound. Clearly the office has grown a lot to the point they can't communicate in a timely manner for such an interactive and emotional process. I've had the pleasure of working with both doctors and you'd be lucky to work with either. I was primarily with Dr Chang and was constantly blown away by how up to date his research was. He doesn't do what seemed to work 30 years ago- he wants to be the best and wants the absolute best chances for his patients. Compared to my past clinics, this clinic was unbelievably clean, calm, and relaxing. It almost felt like a spa. I never felt rushed or like I was being a bother even with the 10,000 questions I brought to every single appointment. I'm now pregnant and ecstatic, but seriously felt a twinge of heartbreak having to leave this clinic. The entire medical team really joins up and roots for you the whole time. Special shoutout to my nurse, Alyssa, who went so far beyond what I ever expected. Since my last review, Ive had two more major procedures with Hanabusa and those two failed. I was very surprised by this as I was told by the doctor that I had a 70-80% chance of success. After being shocked and so saddened by this result, I looked further into Hanabusa's success rates and they are very low. Unfortunate as they were nice to deal with but thats about it. They should have never done the retrievals they did on me as they have a zero success track record, unethical on their part, and for the most recent 2 procedures, I was told a false percentage. Their actual numbers are much lower than this. I will never return to this clinic. If you're looking to obtain IVF services, I recommend you dig deep into very specific success rates for your particular situation before you spend thousands. read more

Would give it 0 stars if I could. Worst experience I have ever had after 5 egg donations. I told them that I was prone to OHSS due to my low weight and young age, and the doctor assured me that they would take care of me. That was a lie. I got no help from them after my procedure. They even refused to write me a prescription for pain medication, even though I just had a surgery and was experiencing symptoms of OHSS and I explicitly asked for it. I asked repeatedly to speak to the doctor who was performing my surgery, and they never had him speak to me. When I told them that I was upset that they didn't let me speak to the doctor prior to my surgery, they insisted that he had spoken to me, even though that is not true. Nobody should have to go through a surgery with 0 support, and not even having the chance to talk to the surgeon. Absolutely disgusting. AVOID THIS CLINIC IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE AND COMFORT. I wouldn't wish them upon my worst enemy. They will be hearing from my lawyer very soon for this malpractice. read more

Love Dr.Leblanc and her team (Nicole is my nurse and she's awesome). Their approach and concern for my care has been out of this world. I too came from a very popular facility in SD where I was treated like a number and had little communication with anyone. Not with hanabusa, you can always get a hold of your nurse and a response from your Dr the same day if you have questions. The way they do their procedures is so thorough and detailed that I trust them one hundred percent. You'll see your MD just about every time for every ultrasound and procedure too which is one of my biggest attractions to this facility. read more

PLEASE READ: USED WRONG EMBRYO Hanabusa IVF used the wrong embryo and it resulted in a pregnancy. They used 2 different ones and they are unsure of which one took. This is absolutely true and serious. Imagine if you use this clinic and your child is actually not yours, the ultimate nightmare. Dr. Chang is brilliant. I consulted with eight different ivf doctors and did ivf cycles at two other clinics before coming to him. He is super smart, thorough and kind. He really looks at each case individually before proceeding. He carefully looks at labs. He discusses things and really takes input from the patient. I really feel heard. His entire staff is extremely friendly, kind and organized. I never thought I would enjoy going to appointments, but everyone is so nice there that I look forward to it. They are good at blood draws, supportive and emotionally understanding of what a tough process this is. Dr. Chang is just such a blessing. He's using his intelligence to truly help people and understands that medicine is a combo of medicine and art. We are very grateful we found this office. read more

We are very pleased to have amazing service with Hanabusa. We had switched clinics previously and was not happy with our experience. Hanabusa has given us more hope to start our family. They communicate well and very personable. We have our own assigned nurse and everyone works so well as a team. Our nurse Heizl usually give us all our updates and makes us feel so comfortable asking questions. She is very supportive and helpful, especially when there are tough moments and decisions. She is so understanding and very calming. Our doctor, Dr Chang, is very caring and knowledgeable. He is very detailed in his plan of care, frequently checking our labs, and adjusting medications that works best in our situation. He checks our history carefully and clearly explains all the information. He gives us the best options, especially with cost. When we need further information, we are able to schedule our video consultations with Dr. Chang and he takes his time to answer all our questions.We feel very supported. We really appreciate everyone at Hanabusa. We are hopeful that one day our dream will come true to have a baby of our own. read more
