Strolled mid-way on this bridge as it was lowkey sketchy and scary especially since it was a bit windy out. It definitely is an old bridge and wooden panels didn't seem as sturdy, plus it was making creaky noise every step I took lol. Easy place to find with GPS and parking is not bad as there's lots of street parking and different parking lots you can park at within a short walking distance. The bridge was sketchy to walk on at first, but watching other people walk and run across made me feel more relaxed as it was strong enough. It is narrow, so you do have to be patient if others are already walking across. When the wind blows hard, you can feel the bridge shake. Overall it was a good experience for us. read more

Definitely a must-do! A quick walk from one side to the other and back. A few slippery spots on a rainy day. Fits one at a time unless you need to squeeze by someone sideways. Theres not a lot of parking but it's easy to find when using maps and you're actively looking for the sign. Theres a lot of neat shops to check out before or after. read more

Decent landmark to check out before heading up to explore the Waimea canyon/West side of the island. Kinda fun since the bridge swings, good place to check your balance. And you can get a good look at the town from the other side of the river. ~8:30am on a Friday was no one else around. This is just a bonus stop since you must get the mac nut cinnamon roll from the midnight bear bakery across the street, lol. This bridge was about a 10~15 min activity to cross off the list. read more

We were already pretty close to this town and had read somewhere on a blog that Lilo and Stitch was inspired from here, so we though might as well visit it while in the area. It's a bridge that was built in the early 1900s, so it is quite interesting if you think about it. This is a cute pit stop in the area, and will take you no more than about 20 minutes to experience it. They had someone making leis at the entrance, so we supported and bought one for $10. Overall, no need to plan a whole day here, only if you're in the area and want to check it out for a few minutes. read more

I must say this is the highlight of my Hanapepe juander ventures. It was so much fun that I almost peed from laughing, good thing somehow I managed to control, lol. Me & my gang came here to solely check this one. I regret not coming here with my Dumdumz but anyhow I will surely visit this again with him if the time permits. 10/19/23 Come to think of it, I have NOT crossed it to go to the other side in all the years we've been coming to Kaua'i.... It feels weird when you step into it but I can only imagine if it were that rickety old makeshift kind of bridge in the movies (Indiana Jones) and you stop & think....is it going to hold my weight or will it break & I fall into the abyss where a bunch of hungry crocodiles await? Fun little walk.. the bridge does have a good swing to it. After crossing the bridge, look for the pink flowers on the bank and find these leaves. They'll close up when you touch them. It's a nice distraction while waiting our turn to walk back over to the other side. read more

Interesting to see especially when you don't have any real plans and are just wandering. Total time spent on the bridge and walking (VEEERYYY SLOOOWLY) creek-side....about less that 45min Bridge is very narrow, I'm curious about the upkeep... who takes care of it. It's looking very weathered and some planks splintered, and rusty, but still sturdy(-ish). Walk in the center plank and the bouncing is less. Walk with each foot on the outer planks and it'll make for a wobbly walk. Just note...it's just 3 planks wide. Be courteous to those passing by you in the bridge, can make for an awkward situation if you don't. Once over the bridge, it bumps up to residential backyards, some with massive huge humongous fruit trees. I've never seen the like. We walked along the scenic well-maintained dirt path admiring the view, but keep in mind there is NO shade. I'm glad this was free, cuz I'm not sure it's worth paying to walk. But it certainly helps draw people there who likely like us spend money at the cute local shops and eateries. We got plenty of souvenirs, shaved ice and shortbread cookies just because we went to explore the swinging bridge. Lots of great photo ops read more

Google Maps will not take you directly here, so you will need to park your car somewhere wise then use your phone to walk towards the bridge. Honestly, the bridge isn't that stunning. But, on the other side of the bridge, lives a cute little lady who is a photographer and sells her own photos/art. There's also a cute store near the bridge which sells some really refreshing lemonade as well. read more

Yes, the bridge does swing so if you are elderly with balancing problems (like me), you may not enjoy walking across this narrow bridge. But once across, you can walk a path along the river in either direction, which is kind of nice. Also, the bridge is close to Japanese Grandma's Cafe, if you are a sushi fan. read more

The swinging bridge in Hanapepe is a must stop and see spot when visiting Kauai. It's so easy to just drive by but Hanapepe and the swinging bridge is like taking a step back in time. It is a fun experience, so make the stop. It's also free! It's a fun bridge to walk across and check out the amazing views. The bridge is wood and actually squeaks and swings a bit when you walk over it. It is perfectly safe and has strong cables holding it together. Our destination was the swinging bridge. Crossing the bridge is a moving experience. The movement is controlled people and/or wind. There is a panoramic view of the ditch/river from the center of the bridge. We chose to visit on Sunday not knowing that most businesses are closed. It was even difficult finding a washroom. We found one store that was open and were directed to a portable toilet at a nearby park. We were aware that Friday nights the town is alive with open galleries and shops however that day did not work with our plans. If possible try not to visit on Sunday. read more

I have a caveat- I love suspension bridges so this was a no brainer. It is in Hanapepe town (turn into the town at the curve- go slow or you'll miss it). You'll see the little lot on the right. It's a smallish lot, a little tight. The bridge is across the river is wooden with wire fencing. It's not very wide and in this almost post Covid world, people were respectful and let groups take turns going across. It was fun because it was a bit gusty and it swung the bridge a bit. It's not far above the River and short stroll. This would be a fun thing to do after you come down Waimea canyon. I bet this would be fun at night! Grab some taro chips at the old house at the beginning of town. You can't go wrong! read more

04/13/2019: Nice place to stop on your way back from Waimea Canyon. You don't want to stop here on the way to the Canyon. That hour may mean the difference between seeing the Kalalau Lookout 10 miles beyond the Waimea Canyon under clear skies or surrounded in fog and mist. So came back after visiting the Kalalau Lookout and then the Canyon in that order. Usual tourist trap with shops on both sides of the bridge. Ice cream shop to cool you down right next to the parking lot on your way walking over the bridge. Sign say the bridge has a maximum capacity of 15 people going in one direction at a time. Takes only a minute or two to walk cross, as no more than 200 yards long. About two feet wide, with four foot chicken wire fencing on the sides. Only way to fall in the river is by leaning too far over the side. Maybe 15 feet above the calm shallow river. I go first, and then try to shake the bridge from the other side, as wife is crossing, but I'm no Hurricane Iniki which collapsed the bridge in 1992. Signs that says no diving. On the other side is a photo gallery shop, with grass covered levees stretching in both directions. Wife always buys some pictures, usually of rainbows over the Canyon or the bridge. Lowlight of the day comes when an old geezer freezes with fright in the center of the bridge, while we are waiting to cross. No social distancing trying to step around him. One wrong step and you won't need to shower back at the condo! read more

My friend brought me here for the first time. He was telling me all about his kiddy days when this rocky rope bridge was the scariest thing ever. Luckily for me, it wasn't as bad as he made me think lol. It is an old looking bridge that appears to have some work done to it. The bridge is narrow, probably as wide as 2 people standing shoulder to shoulder. The bridge crosses this calm lake (I think) and it is shaky, but you'll live. I'm here thinking it was the rope bridge high up in the mountains like the one from the movie Indiana Jones lol. The bridge leads to a little shop, but they weren't open when I was there. Unfortunately, it was raining on us so we didn't stay too long. The parking is small and it's within this ghost town. My som said he did some research and they say it's haunted, but I say it's simply beautiful so come check it out if you have some time. read more

We made a quick detour here when driving to the West side of the island for a boat tour. I was worried that we wouldn't be able to squeeze it in, but once you find parking you just walk on over. A small family was leaving as we arrived so we had it all to ourselves. There was a breeze that day and the swinging bridge actually swung more than I expected, so I turned around about half way. There are posted signs with info about the bridge's construction and history. If you have more time to spare, there are shops and restaurants to explore here as well. read more

A wooden suspension bridge that creaks and shakes when you walk to cross the Hanapepe River - sounds fun, right? It's not something to go out of your way of but neat to see when you are passing through. There is a cute shop selling local items and treats at the front. They closed rather early the day we went so try to do that first before anything if you want to peruse. Across the bridge, you'll find a home with a photography studio that's definitely worth checking out. I also heard the town has an Art Walk on Friday evenings where all the galleries of local Kauai artists are open to view. There is parking and a short walk between businesses, on a paved walkway, you come to wooden stairs up to the swinging bridge. The bridge spans a shallow canal of water. This was an amusing landmark to visit in Lilo's and Stitch's town. It's very rickety and you feel it may fly away in a storm. In fact, the original did break and this is the replica. The town is very cute so if you want to take a short detour just to see a very old town, do it. While we were there, the swinging Bridge isn't swinging, or at least it was not accessible. There were barricades on the steps so you couldn't go across. But from what i could see, you'd be crossing a developed ditch and the scenery was not very attractive. Perhaps if you can actually cross the bridge, it could be worth the stop. read more

Beautiful swinging bridge in an old small secluded town. The bridge is beautiful over a gorgeous river. It doesn't swing very much so I don't think it's scary like you would think. It moves just a bit to get a cool effect. It is very quick to see but it's beautiful to stop on your way to another site. We stopped on our way to Waimea canyon. read more
