So my family and I went to Handel's on Clingan Road. First, the employee helping me didn't have a name tag on. Secondly I simply asked for one scoop of ice cream in a cup for my 5 year old daughter. The girl helping me stated that Handels doesn't sell ice cream by the scoop. She said that I couldn't buy one scoop of ice cream in a cup. She said the smallest they sell is 2 scoops in a cup. I asked her if they had baby cups like all other ice cream shops and she said no that it was not possible for me to buy one scoop of ice cream. She said I could get one scoop BUT SHE WOULD HAVE TO CHARGE ME FOR 2 SCOOPS. I'm like WHAT??!!!!! Thirdly, I wanted to buy 2 scoops of ice cream of different flavors for me in a cup. She proceeded to tell me that I could get 2 scoops of ice cream in a cup BUT SHE WOULD HAVE TO CHARGE ME FOR 3 SCOOPS BECUASE THAT IS THEIR POLICY. At this point I'm thinking that I am in an alternate reality. I told her that I have gone to Handel's many times and ordered 1 scoop of say chocolate and 1 scoop of say vanilla, in a cup and I was actually only charged for 2 scoops, because I actually only bought 2 scoops of ice cream. She told me that this has been their policy for a while now. I said that was nuts. I will not be going back. How completely unprofessional!!!! What ice cream shop operates like this? Was in the area with some friends, one of them has family there and has been going there for basically her entire life. When she lived in Alabama, she took me to Handel's twice and I was amazed how good it was. When she told me that the original was in Youngstown, and we were going, this was on my list of places to go. I ordered a double scoop in a waffle cup of Chocolate and Mint and Chip, and it was outstanding. Been at the original was even more special. I have recently learned that there is a Handel's not too far from where I grew up in Southern California and best believe that I will be going there on my next trip home. read more

The reason they didn't receive more stars is because there's nowhere to sit. It's kind of an inconvenience to come to an ice cream place & running the risk of dousing your leather seats with ice cream. Nonetheless the prices are fair & the most of the ice cream on the menu is pretty amazing. I opted for the "4 flavor sampler" which is kind of a huge portion for one person. The flavors were "strawberry cheesecake", "New York cheesecake", "Nutella" & "Praline Pecan". Most of them were delicious but the New York was pretty boring while the strawberry was the most tasty. I'll definitely return as I'm in Youngstown pretty often. read more

My parents are from Ohio and I've been coming up to Youngstown nearly every summer since -my whole life (26 years!). Handel's is the only place the relatives took me to for ice cream and there's a reason for that. It is possibly the best ice cream I've ever had. I love me some Blue Bell, but they've got nothing on the flavors and creaminess of Handel's homemade treats. I fail at buying pints since they rarely make it to the next day or anyone else's mouth. Matt G. is so right about Grape. It's currently my favorite flavor. I know I shouldn't settle on it, because there must be a hundred I have yet to try, but I can't help ordering it every visit. Other flavors I love are Cotton Candy, Butter Pecan and Chocolate Pecan. (Uh, I'm from Texas. I like pecans. ;p) I have been to several Handel's locations in Ohio. This one was the most recent and it looked like it was closed. All my memories of Handel's equal at least a 10 minute wait, but screw that! I was happy to have my cone so quickly. I just stopped to get ice cream and because I ask the stupid ass girl there NOT to put her fingers in my cup before she put ice cream in it, her dumb ass gonna get an attitude grab another cup suck her teeth and do it again, not only is she constantly using the same gloves but her glove has a hole in it with her fake fingernail poking thru and she didn't bother to change it. Handel's is to ice cream as Dylan is to music as Shakespeare is to drama. In my book, Handel's is the end all be all. The brand should be mentioned in any serious ice cream debate. In Y-town we've been spoiled with this gem that sets the bar so high. I remember an english teacher in high school telling us that all philosophy was a footnote to Plato (I believe he was quoting someone). This is kind of how I feel about Handel's ice cream. There's Handel's and just everything else that strives to be mentioned in the same breath. There's Handel's and every other ice cream joint that is competing to be a not so close second. Listen, Handel's has a plethora of flavors and they're always adding more and I don't know if I've ever had one where I wasn't like, "this is the greatest ice cream I've ever had in my life". They will repeatedly, through the years, knock your socks off. The ice cream is rich, and creamy, and they perfectly incorporate flavors and toppings. It can be overly rich, but typically they are spot on. Texturally, you'd be hard pressed to find ice cream as pleasing as fresh Handle's. It's an incredibly creamy consistency, but still a frozen delight. It's difficult to put into words how good Handel's is. It's synonymous with Y-town, and one of our greatest exports. I'd contend that Handel's alone makes Youngstown the ice cream capital of the world. We're proud of this ice cream and very lucky to have it. read more

We stopped by on a hot weekend afternoon. The wait wasn't long at all, but we probably could have used a few more minutes to look at all the flavor options! We tried the Chocolate Pecan, Coffee Chocolate Chip, Pineapple Sorbet, and Praline Pecan. The scoops were huge, but the ice cream was delicious. The texture was amazing. And unlike a lot of other ice creams, these flavors retained their punch until the last bite. I only wish there was some seating--even a couple of picnic tables or benches would do. read more

If you're from the Mahoning Valley, or have lived there for any amount of time then you know Handel's. What you don't know is this particular location. By far the least crowded Handel's since no one seems to be aware of its means you get your ice cream into your person faster, which is the goal after all. I've been to a lot of Handel's locations in Ohio, but this was my first visit to the original location. It's a bit hard to find, located behind another building. No line at 930pm. The servers were having a good time singing along with the radio. I got plenty of trial tastes but settled on the 4 scoop sampler with new Blue Cookie Monster flavor (which reminds me of the version created by Afters ice cream in LA), Salted Caramel truffle, Chocolate Chunk (which is their darkest chocolate) & Cotton Candy Confetti ( great with tiny candy pieces). This is the "original" location after the first original location from the 1940's. All the other ones are from the 1990's and forward. They recently did a remodel but used fake plastic brick and removed the water fountain. The stores in the suburbs though, have real brick. Wonder why they skimped on the flagship store... I have always liked Handel's ice cream. I do like their butter pecan, chocolate pecan and sherbets. They do not have a chocolate chip ice cream. Their seasonal peach has little peach flavor so I would skip it. Price is VERY reasonable. Yes, you do often have to wait in line at this store, too. read more
