There's not many places in the area that will fix a 50+ year old German Cuckoo Clock, but Hands of Time is definitely one of them. I first used request a quote on Yelp and sent some pictures of the inner workings of the clock. The owner got back to me fairly quickly to tell me that they would actually have to look at the clock in person to really determine repairs and give me an accurate estimate. Not exactly sure what the Request A Quote is for... but ya know, I completely understand haha. I mean... how could they really give me a good estimate without really taking a close look at the clock mechanism. In any event, I went to Hands Of Time - It's located in the Historic Savage Mill mall... thing. From the last time I went there, they have significantly reduce the size of the store. It's maybe cut in half or even maybe a third of what it used to be. In any event, in the back you can bring your clock up and go to the master horologists and get a estimate. When they took a look at my clock, the gentleman Ben said that the clock was in pretty good shape. The mechanism looked like it was in good shape and it just needed a thorough cleaning and oiling. The bellows ( the mechanism that makes the clock cuckoo) were torn to shreds. There's two of the them, and both needed to be replaced. Also potentially the cuckoo bird needs to be replaced. And they have a service, which I was completely unaware of, where they are going to run the clock for a couple of weeks and adjust it and make sure that it is keeping good time. All said and done, the cost was a good deal higher than I thought it was gonna be. He said that they're looking at a 350-400 dollar repair. I was expecting around 300 max. That said, this is very specialized work, not many people do it, and they are running on a back order of 3-4 months. Yes, you heard that right. They literally have so many clocks to repair that it's gonna take 3-4 months for my cuckoo to be done. So... simple supply and demand model shows that they can definitely charge a bit more. That's economics. I will be getting my cuckoo clock back in Spring sometime, and I can't wait. I bought this cuckoo clock off of Ebay 'cause it was a replica of my Grandmother's cuckoo clock. It was missing one figurine, and I'm not quite sure that the music box is the same - the models had a few different songs you could choose from. But I truly just can't wait until their done and I can show off this jewel of my clock collection. read more

Hands of time is located in the Savage Mill complex. The best way to get to them is to park at the "large lot" at the end of the Mill by the adventure area. When you walk in, go downstairs and it is near-immediate on the right. This group really loves clocks and clearly has a lot of experience. While I didn't watch them work, in speaking with them, they speak intelligently and are happy to explain what they did. Their prices definitely aren't cheap but there isn't much competition around. To get my cuckoo clock completely cleaned (and they test it running for about a week to ensure it keeps time), it was just over $300. read more

My grandfather got a grandfather clock in 1970. It has been passed down through the family to me. When we finally moved into a place with room for it, my father brought the clock up to us, but at that point it had not run in several years. We really had no idea how to get it working, and it sat in our home for over a year - looking pretty, but useless as a time piece. Enter Hands of Time. I made an appointment with John to come out to our College Park home and service the clock. He made an appointment for 7:45 AM - nice, because I can still get to work at a reasonable time - for a few weeks later. On the day of, John arrived right at 7:45 am. He introduced himself and got straight to work. As he cleaned and serviced the clock, he was able to give me a few details on history and age, as well as tell me what he was doing as he took apart the clock and cleaned it (it took a good deal of cleaning - two hours worth!). Once he was done, he set the clock back up, explaining to me the mechanics, as well as how to maintain and operate it. John was professional, nice, and the grandfather clock works perfectly now. In addition, it wasn't too expensive for a 2-hour house visit. I'd recommend Hands of Time to anyone with a grandfather clock in need of servicing. read more

Nice guys but...brought them my steeple clock that I made in high school. In a nut shell, they wanted $800 to rebuild the movement. Telling me this is wrong with it and that's wrong with it, etc. I said no thanks and brought it home. I took it apart and found out what the problem was. Three drops of oil and she's purring like a kitten now. I'd say it really didn't need an eight hundred dollar rebuild, huh??!! read more

I called Hands of Time to put my family's grandfather clock back together after moving it from California to MD. This is a very old, very large clock that has been in my family since it was made and I was nervous about finding someone to put the clock back together. Ben from Hands of Time was meticulous, very skilled, courteous and smart. He was very careful and took his time to clean the inner workings of the clock and put it all back together. When he finished, he described how everything worked on the clock and told me to call him anytime if I have a question about the clock. We bought a Black Forest cuckoo clock in Germany (on a trip in which my now-wife and I got engaged) about two years ago and were not able to get it to work (the pendulum stick would not move). So, there it remained mounted on our wall solely as a decorative piece of art. Finally, with our one year wedding anniversary on the horizon, we decided to look into getting the clock fixed, bringing us to Hands of Time. First of all, we love the quaint historic Savage Mills so it wasn't hard to motivate ourselves to take a relaxing Sunday afternoon trip out there to check it out. The shop has a great selection of clocks on display, but our main focus was the clock repair window and we were immediately greeted by 2 pleasant clock repair guys. Upon setting our clock on the counter, it looked like they were assessing it to see who would be better suited to evaluate the problem, and the older of the two gentlemen won the challenge :) He took it in the back and, for the next several minutes, tinkered with it while we hovered around the window and casually perused the clocks on display as we waited. About 5 minutes go by and he totes the clock back out, explaining that the problem was that the pendulum stick was getting stuck on something (this is my layman's interpretation...he used much more technical terms!) so he had just bent the "something" a little so the pendulum stick could swing freely, and all was right in the world! Wala!!! He also explained in super simple, newbie language how to get it working when we got it home, even hanging it on the wall to provide a demonstration. After all this, AND finding a box and other packaging so we could easily and safely carry the clock, pendulum stick, and weights, back to the car, there was no charge! Wow!!! What a refreshing customer service experience. We will not go anywhere else except Hands of Time to get this clock maintained every couple years, and for any other future clock repair needs that may arise! read more
