Mr Peenstra spoke to our club today, doing appraisals. I was especially impressed with his knowledge of so many different things, Jewelry, Art, silver pieces, antiques. He showed us how to look for marks on jewelry and how to tell if a ruby was real. I was fortunate to be the browner of the ruby, which I would have never guessed and sold it for far less than its value. His persona is warm, sometimes funny and always knowledgeable. I inhereted several cloisenne vases but was uncertain of the value. I called Peenstra to find out how to obtain an appraisal. Rather than have me bring in the items (1+ hours away) Peenstra offered to give a general estimation of the value if I would send them several photos of the items. I sent the photos earier today, they called me back within the hour, and provided me with EXACTLY the information I was seeking! We met Todd Peenstra at Reston, VA's Antique appraisal, where he treated each person and item they brought in with respect and humor. He was very knowledgeable and honest about an array of art items, distinguishing between the quote one could hope for selling the item and what they would want to insure it for. I spoke with Mr. Peenstra on two occasions in person and again via telephone, asking if he could provide a written fair market value (FMV) appraisal for a large volume of family jewelry that I planned to donate. I clearly emphasized that there were many pieces, that I would number each item and provide a form for recording FMVs, and asked him to identify any "hidden gems" he found among the costume jewelry. He agreed to do so and said that he provided appraisals of this nature often. In addition, he agreed to include appraisal of 3 antique books that we discussed. I delivered the jewelry and 3 books to Mr. Peenstra on October 28, 2021 and paid him the $100 he demanded in cash and up-front before proceeding. After he informed me that he had completed the appraisal and that the jewelry and books were ready to be picked up, I retrieved my property on November 15, 2021 together with a blank valuation form and no other document identifying the value of the jewelry or books. On November 18, 2021, December 27, 2021 and again on March 23, 2022, I emailed Mr. Peenstra, repeating my request for his written appraisal and relating my disappointment with his failure to provide the valuations he had agreed to provide on 3 occasions and that I had paid for in full in October 2021. His unprofessional and unethical behavior in demanding up-front payment for work never performed is inexcusable. Accepting only cash payments may be another tactic for unsuspecting customers (and the IRS?) to note. read more
