This time, knowing that I had the stairs from hell, a very large refrigerator, icy, snowy sidewalks to contend with, and my new destination being 40 miles away, I decided to use a u-haul and movers. Plus the fact that I wanted to save Dad's back. This move was a little unexpected. I needed to move back to my parents house to help take care of my mom after she gets out of the hospital, where she has been for the last 55 days and will continue to be for a few more weeks. I packed my belongings into two categories, things to go to the house and things to go into storage. One of the more organized packing jobs I have ever done. I called on a Friday afternoon and they had time for me the next day...worked perfect for my days off. Two guys showed up, walked up the stairs, introduced themselves and commented on the narrow stairs, awkward door openings and the lovely 90 degree turn half-way down the stairs. I explained what needed to get loaded first, and they began. They got the fridge down first, thanking us for kindly taking doors off hinges, and removing the fridge doors, a tight squeeze, but we got it up there, so we knew it would go down. Next went the mattress and box-spring, and the insanely tall headboard I own. They loaded everything on the truck, secured it all, and did this in 45 minutes never once complaining about the awful stairs, and without damaging anything. I believe this was the best money I have ever spent. They charge $70/hr with a 15 min destination charge to the location and back. I would have paid twice that. I gave both gentlemen a very large tip, they thanked me for my business and went on their way. I would highly recommend this company. Moving is a stressful time, and they took a lot of the burden off my shoulders.

I got quotes from a couple different companies, but Wayfinder stuck out. For price, and for the "value added" services that can't be measured. The homeowner insurance for our parent's policy was pretty comprehensive - so we were going to opt away from getting insurance through Bekin. Dale from Wayfinder asked us to confirm if all perils were covered - including if a Bekin representative accidentally damaged the contents. He was spot on - that specific peril wasn't covered- so we decided to add the insurance coverage. We never needed it - these guys were so careful, and everything arrived in great shape. A team of 4 guys came to moving day in Jamestown and each one was as nice as the next. One guy stayed on the truck to organize each box and item as it came onto the truck, one guy took care in itemizing each item as it was loaded, and two guys carried the stuff into the truck. From the basement, from the first floor, and from the second floor. No nicked corners, no problems. They understood that they weren't just moving "stuff". They were moving a life. They helped us settle up some of the remaining furniture into place since the full contents weren't being moved. I wish I could remember each of their names. I think Ron remained on the truck, and James did the diligent inventory work, but I may be wrong. They were all so kind. It was an emotional day for us all, and they were compassionate and professional. Brian, our driver, was there in Jamestown, and right on time at the designated time in Virginia. He was professional, and helpful. He brought Jose for the unloading part in Virginia. What a sweet man he was. Both Brian and Jose went out of their way to indulge all my - "this goes in my van" - and - "please take this from my van and bring it inside" and efficiently get everything off the truck and into the apartment. I never felt rushed as I went through the checklist and and made sure each box/item was accounted for. Back to Jose - not only did he notice that the bed would likely slide because it would be on hardwood floors - he recommended that we get little feet for the legs of the bed - but he noticed that one of the workers felt uncomfortable. She was leaving her shift at the facility - and the moving truck was near her car. She had plenty of room. But he asked if he could help - he stopped what he was doing - and he got her keys - and backed her car out of her parking spot -and away from the moving truck. So incredibly thoughtful. I would decidedly use them again. They get it.

My nightmare with the moving company from Hell --which they call Move Seniors Lovingly…read more A complaint to the company resulted in the owner sending a bill that was way over the quote, and then threatening both to involve the police to get it paid immediately and sell off all the contents of our home that were just moved into storage. Not a lot of love there. We hired this Toronto-area mover because it boasts a sensitivity to the transition needs of seniors and claims a top rating with the Better Business Bureau. It also assured us that it enforces the most advanced Covid-19 safety protocols among its workers. What it did in reality was very different. There is no love for seniors here. Just abuse, and treating us like we are an easy target for a quick buck. Move Seniors Lovingly contracted with an entirely different company to do the move, and one we had never heard of before. They went way over the estimate and employed badly trained workers who were careless and caused major damage to irreplaceable pieces of furniture. They didn't even come close to following Covid-19 safety protocols. Instead of using the one bathroom I asked them to use, they repeatedly used every bathroom in our home. During the move, they didn't wear gloves or sanitize their hands, as we were promised they would, and their masks were frequently off when they were speaking to us. After I called head office to express concern about the careless handling of items that were damaged, two workers stormed into my bedroom, shouting angrily at me for complaining. Yes, they were in my bedroom when they did this, and, yes, I felt threatened. Think it couldn't get worse than this? It did. They handled the first part of the move badly and then knocked off at 1pm, leaving half of the home still to be loaded on the truck. It necessitated another truck and crew the following day. We assumed this would all be included as part of the original quote for the move. Wrong. They charged nearly three thousand dollars extra. They also charged for a crew of three when only two showed up -- the same movers who had earlier stormed into my bedroom, despite the company's assurances that they would not be sent again. They planned the space requirements for the move so poorly that we had to leave valuable items behind, never to be seen again. Think it didn't get worse than this? On the next business day following completion of the move, I wrote to head office to set out my complaints about the abusive conduct of the moving crew and the damage caused to our items by their carelessness. I expected the company would look into our concerns. Instead, what we got was a final bill that went over the amount we were quoted by thousands of dollars. We had already paid a deposit for the move amounting to more than $3,000. Now, the company was demanding another $8,000. There was no response to our concerns. What we did get came in the form of a very blunt threat from the owner 48 hours later demanding that we pay the entire bill immediately, without question, or he would have the police come after us and he would dispose of everything we had placed in storage with his company. "I will give you a 24hr window to settle. If I don't hear from you. I will take further action through legal counsel, Police, and a disposal of all items in the two filled lockers that we have for you. Sincerely Brian Salnek 647 330-0424" Can you imagine a company owner sending an email like this to a customer who has raised concerns? He clearly thinks he's above the law. His threat to dispose of our possessions is not allowed by the regulations that govern storage companies. There is a process that must be followed, and a bill that is not even a week old does not come anywhere close to meeting those requirements. But apparently the law was of no concern to this owner. He knew he had the upper hand. He had all the possessions we had accumulated over a lifetime, and he knew we wouldn't want to take chances. We had to pay everything he demanded. It was a shakedown, pure and simple. I am desperately afraid that when we have our goods moved out of this company's storage to our new home, we are going to be shocked by how many of our items are either missing or damaged. I am also worried that there will be another huge shakedown to get them out of storage. So our nightmare with this company is far from over. The company's owner, Brian Salnek, claims "we wrote the book on senior's move transition." All we saw was the chapter on fleecing, threatening and overcharging seniors. Don't let yourself or a loved one be taken in by this company. Everyone, and especially seniors, expect and are entitled to compassion, dignity and respect. This company delivers threats, bullying and abuse.

Thursday was packing day, and a crew of three arrived precisely on time and packed up our house incredibly quickly and efficiently. Friday was the actual move, and the crew was again punctual and efficient. They arrived around 9am and by 11:30am we were fully moved and unpacking. We did a virtual walkthrough a couple weeks prior to the move so they could give me a ballpark estimate, and the final price wound up being about $30 under the estimate; pretty damn close. The best endorsement I can offer: I had a remote meeting Friday morning as the moving started which I took in the backyard so I was out of the way. I kept seeing my husband wandering around out of the corner of my eye, so I muted my audio to see what was wrong. His response? "I'm bored. There isn't anything for me to do, they're just taking care of everything." They really went above and beyond -- helped bring a bulky arcade cabinet that we weren't moving up to the garage from the basement, and even assisted with arranging the placement of rugs in the apartment so they were sorted out before piling on furniture and boxes. When we got settled and unpacked in the new place we found not a single thing was broken or damaged. I was impressed that beyond their obvious competence everyone was extremely friendly and easy to work with. I would unhesitatingly recommend them to anyone looking for a painless moving experience.
