Unfortunately, I couldn't even attend for a month to try it out... I got beaten senseless by half of a class of 10-12 people during beginner class "light/technical" sparring. I hit everyone half speed in the head once (pulling all my punches besides maybe 1 or 2) and they flipped out like I had just slapped their mothers. After the sparring, I got ceremoniously bopped in the head by Coach Eddie the Magnificent. On my 5th day of class to boot... I basically paid $300+ just to get a concussion and have my SPINE damaged. Very disturbing experience... I did not enjoy these furious 'ommpa loompa's' and SIR PETTY EDDIE slapping me in the head while I was dazed and confused. #LeaveYourNapoleanComplexesHome #NoBueno #InPainaYearLater #TheDirtyDozen #CheaperbytheDozen #CheckingTeeps #RabbitPunchMadness #HadtoSupermanThatYouKnowWhat #GotPunchedintheBackoftheHeadsooooManyTimes

I was excited to hear that there was a champion fighter only a mile from the hotel I was staying at so I asked if I could come in and try the class. They emailed me back fairly quickly saying that they'd love to have me, which made me happy to go. My instructor told me to sign up for a beginner class. When I got there we did some warmups, but no jump rope like I'm used to. I was definitely the oldest in class. According to the schedule, it was a beginner class, but it seemed more like a kids class to me. During the time I was there, we did technical sparring. I was happy to be paired with more advanced, older students (the one girl won her last fight), and then also some kids. I felt a little out of my element, and I def. got punched in the face by a teenage boy at least once lol. I had cut my eye earlier in the day so it was bloodshot and kept watering. Def. not a good look, and maybe I shouldn't have even taken class. Oh well. After class, I got asked for a payment of $30, which I would have liked to have known up front, but nonetheless, I think it's a reasonable price for sure. I would have appreciated having more instruction on skills and technique though. Coach Eddie was walking around making suggestions, but my more advanced partners were pretty quiet. I did learn a defense move and quick, follow up counter attack to kicks, but it was mostly sparring and not so much instruction at this particular session. I'd say this class is really intense. So if you are looking to fight, this would def. be the place for you. Also, take it seriously. I stayed after to watch the advanced class and I have to say it was pretty intimidating, and Coach Eddie doesn't accept anything less than your best. If you are in town temporarily, def. talk to the gym about trying a class, but maybe call and get more details first so you know what to expect.

I've had gym memberships all over Greenwich and Stamford (i.e. NYSC, UFC, Planet Fitness, LA…read moreFitness, etc), and Heavy Hitting Boxing & Fitness is BY FAR my favorite gym. I found the other gyms to be highly commercial and impersonal, and after the initial sales pitch it seemed as if the staff really didn't care much about you at all--only your money. I've never felt this way at Heavy Hitting Boxing & Fitness. Heavy Hitting Boxing and Fitness is the kind of neighborhood gym I have been looking for. It has plenty of character and all the fitness equipment you need to get into great shape, and a warm, caring, friendly, and funny staff to help you achieve your fitness goals. I also think it's a bit more private than most other commercial gyms, which I really appreciate. What makes this gym so special in the end is the people that work there. Paul, the owner, has a great repertoire with clients and trainers alike, which initially brought me to the gym. Paul has attracted some of the best trainers in Fairfield County (including pro MMA fighters!) by creating a welcoming atmosphere for all (he also trains some of the trainers himself!). I always enjoy my sessions at Heavy Hitting Boxing & Fitness and feel well taken care of there.

At the same time I am not looking to be in some uber-hardo Cobra Kai type place where I have to do bare knuckle push-ups on shards of broken glass to prove how tough I am. Stamford Boxing and Fitness is exactly what I am looking for. Jesse and Rafael create a great environment to get in shape and learn the discipline of boxing. The classes cater to a wide range of students, from people who are there predominantly to get in or stay in shape, to those who are competitive amateur fighters. The classes are organized and fun, with a good balance between the strength/cardio workouts and boxing technique. Jesse and Rafael are good at moving around the space and helping out the students on their technique and form. They use a shared mixed use space, which is used by other martial art schools so they have all the equipment you would expect, free weights, tractor tire, heavy bags, speed bag and one boxing ring. It's nice to have found a place with everything I was looking for so close to home.
