I've been growing my hair out for five months in preparation to start wearing a middle part flow hairstyle. I was really liking how things were progressing with my length and needed a bit of shaping up so I made an appointment with Ashley. I showed her inspo pics with flowy length on the top and sides with a low taper in front of the ears (just barely above the sideburns) and a clean longer taper in the back. I didn't ask for anything overly complicated. As she finished the haircut and handed me the mirror to look, she said "I did the best I could but your hair is SO straight." Mind you one of the inspo pics I shared was an East Asian guy who had straight hair like me. She ended up buzzing my hair all the way up the side of my head into a severe undercut, where the longer hair on top stuck out in thin spikes. One side was cut differently than the other. The back was not tapered at all. I did not get the flow haircut I asked for, and I was devastated. I went home and tried to find a way to style this travesty of a haircut that could salvage it but there was no way. I texted pics to some friends and their responses were: "oh they did you dirty", and "who did this?? I'm ready to fight!" and "this is follicular malpractice!". I couldn't go out in public like this, so I ended up buzzing the top completely off, losing all of the length I spent so long growing out. I LOVE Handsome Bastard - I've been going here for years now. The vibes of the place is perfect; it's super clean and chill. I also appreciate that I'm never pressured to buy something (like the product they display in-store, which I actually really like but don't want to be pressured into buying). Despite moving to the west side of the city, I still make the trek to see Eric, who is the only one I've seen the whole time I've been going here. Every time it feels like hanging out with a good friend - pleasant small talk that doesn't feel awkward, weird or forced. Even if no one is speaking, it never feels strained. Eric is most definitely very creative, and it shows in his work and his whole vibe. He listens to what I want and executes it flawlessly every time; if he has questions, he'll ask them. If I want to run something by him (like trying something new with my hair), I trust him to give his honest opinion about it. Additionally, he always remembers what I want to do with my hair, even when I can't - as someone with memory issues, I really appreciate this. I recently moved into the area and honestly didn't have many hair needs, but I wanted to find someone to help keep and maintain my beard. I found Handsome Bastard here on Yelp, and then I went through their staff to find the guy with the most prominent beard, and that turned out to be James. I've been coming to see James every month for the past five months, and I have regularly gotten compliments on my beard since I started working with him. Every time I've had an appointment scheduled, I've shown up, and everything starts on time and finishes on time. The decor is fun, the music is always great, and the environment is lively. I really enjoy and highly recommend this shop! The decor and music make it a really comfortable and hip spot. I regularly get my hair cut from Rachael--she's the most kind and knowledgeable stylist I've ever had. In between great conversations, I especially enjoy how she'll tell you the techniques and intentions she uses as she cuts your hair. It's kind of like a low key lesson in hairstyling and clearly demonstrates her professionalism. I'm growing out my wavy/curly hair now and I can only trust Rachael to give me the look I'm going for. I used to get my beard professionally trimmed before Covid, but with the mask mandates, etc, I haven't had my beard trimmed since, well, let's not dwell in the past. I live down the street from Handsome Bastard, and I like the vibe, so I booked an appointment online with Nicole. I kind of went in blind, didn't know any of the barbers from one another but I liked Nicole a lot. She had great attention to detail and made my first pandemic beard trim memorable. Yesterday, my mother was searching for a place to bring my Uncle Brian for a haircut. My mom does not use Yelp, so I am taking the liberty to write a review for them. Brian is 55 years old, has Down Syndrome, lives close by at Misericordia. & James cut his hair. James did a phenomenal job & even gave Brian a beer (which made Brian feel super cool and very special)! Brian's hair looks fantastic, and I cannot give enough praise to this place. I've been to two different barbers at Handsome Bastard. Every time it has been unpleasant and somewhat painful. They are too aggressive with their combs to the point it hurts my ears. They have not received proper training on how to be gentle. A haircut is to be a pleasant experience not a nail bitter. For this I give them "1" star. My 16-year trans son just came from this shop (2/15/22). He saw Eric, and that was the second time he had an appointment with him. The first time, I'd made the appointment, so Eric assumed my kid wasn't 16. I assured him he was. This time, my kid paid from his own Chase account/card, but didn't know he had enough to tip so simply paid the $30 cost. When he got home, he told me he wanted to run money back up, but by that time, Eric had already texted to let him know he wasn't welcome back because he didn't tip him AND wasn't 16. (He instructed my kid to share with me). Eric is OBSESSED with my son's age, even though he's been assured he is 16 by both myself and my kid. My kid looks younger as we're managing his testosterone levels to get the most growth for him before we up his dose and his growth plates close. NOT THAT THAT INFORMATION IS ERIC'S OR ANYONE ELSE'S BUSINESS. I'm fuming. My kid is hurt. What I thought was a queer/trans friendly shop is absolutely not. I'll be sharing with parents of all queer kids I know they should absolutely not send their kids here. Shame on you all. +Eric just texted me back to shame me for sharing my kid's personal journey (spoiler alert: he's not ashamed of being trans) and to let me know I should spread the word they don't accept 16 year olds. They were super queer friendly - the barbers seemed like they were mostly all "family" and there were several other cutie queer butches getting their hair cut too. I noticed that the they hired two more barbers, but the one I went to is no longer there. I can't tell you about the skills and chair side manners of these barbers. Got my haircut Saturday, February 2nd. This was the second time I've been to Handsome Bastard, and both times the barbers exceeded my expectations. This time, James cut my hair. I'm an actor doing a "period" show, and I described what I needed. He was very patient with me and always checked in to see if I liked what he was doing. Hands down the best haircut I've had in years. I'm looking forward to getting a full on haircut and beard trim after my show closes. I have been taking my son (age 10) to a Super Cuts since I stopped cutting his hair. I came across Handsome Bastard on social (I think in the Rogers Park Facebook page). It seemed like now was a good time to start trying to support a small business, so I booked an appointment. I am 99% certain that I booked on my phone- but it is possible that I booked it using a web browser. The method for booking does matter, because their mobile booking mechanism does not stipulate that they don't do cuts for kids. When I booked, I included a note that the appointment was for my son. We show up after a talk about getting regular hair cuts is a form of self-care and how he should behave in a space like this. As we walk in one of the staff said they "just saw" the note that this was a cut for a kid and that they don't do cuts for kids, sorry. I was a bit incredulous, because that seems like something that I would have noticed. Then the staff was like (with the tone that I was indeed the dumbest person on the planet): "it's on our website". And he's right, there is a small note about not doing childrens services- but not on their booking page and not on their mobile site. read more

Although i was not able to clearly explain how i wanted my hair done still the end result was great. It's important for a stylist to be satisfied with his work and i must say Juan kept going at it until he was satisfied with the look. This was my second time trying this establishment and my experience was unpleasant. The barber named Ryon Adkins was not friendly or considerate. I wasn't greeted the moment I walked in. The other barbers seemed nice and were chatting during my haircut, Ryon instead of asking how I was doing and at least making short conversation, he ignored me and I got an unfriendly vibe. I have lived in Rogers park for a while and it was good to see a nice boutique barbershop in the area however the lack of personality and attention made me feel I'd rather go somewhere my business is appreciated and I am made to feel welcomed. read more
